Opportunity for Redirect?
-
Hi there!
I've got a site selling outdoor jackets and remembered about a friend's old business website (that also sold outdoor jackets) which is now dormant.
He's kindly agreed to let me host a splash page on his old domain, or to use the domain to redirect.
I wasn't sure if Google looked negatively at redirects, so I suggested the page host option? What do you think?
I guess what it would mean is for us to supply our name server details to him, and then ask him to put these into his DNS settings.
If we were to host a page in this way, would we add a page of relevant content, a simple link? Would this pull the link juice through?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Matt

I think it would be better if it were hosted on a different server than your main site is.

Thanks Adam.
He currently doesn't have anything hosted other than the domain name unfortunately. If I was to get a splash page up there, I would have to host it.
I'll ask him about buying the domain, and if it went through, what's the most effective method of utilising this?
I was a little concerned that Google might look at the redirect unfavourably, especially if it was hosted by us, and using the same company that hosts our own site.
Maybe I'm making it more complicated than it is?
Appreciate your help

Thanks Rob!
It seems that buying the domain would give us lots more options... I really only spoke to the owner about the possibility for a splash page or 301 redirect
It's all a bit new to me really, the URL gives a 404 Error at the moment, so the content of his old site is gone.
If I was to buy the domain, how would I go about doing the page by page redirects?
I set up a crawl there, and did a little research on Open Site Explorer; found 50 Links from 34 Domains. So there's definitely juice there!

If the old domain has incomming links, then you can 301 redirect it. That would be good value.
If it does not have any links, then it is of no value to redirect.

"I guess what it would mean is for us to supply our name server details to him, and then ask him to put these into his DNS settings."
Don't do that. That would setup your site to be accessible via both urls.
Either put up a splash page on his domain linking to yours, or do a 301 redirect. I've had success with both tactics.

Hi Matt,
This can be a great thing for you - if the old dormant domain is till being crawled, still indexed, and still has inbound links built to the site over time.
Adding a page to his site, and with unique relative content might pass back some value - but if the domain has been dormant for some time - the 'juice' value has probably fizzled a little (along with the site's rankings) for the market KW's he was targeting.
Is he planning to give you the domain? Perhaps sell it to you? If so, and he wanted out - I would do a domain and page by page level 301 redirect from his old dated site - to your domain. This would help pass through all the page link value as well as the domain - helping correct any 404's errorrs that might occur and help search index'es to map out the new 'address' of the pages on your site as the location - also pushing through those links and value to your domain.
Run a 'crawler' on his domain to map out the whole site - and then create an excel doc to map any relavant pages, info etc to pages on your domain and prep a 301 file to handle the redirects.
If that's a route he's willing to go, that's more or less what I would do to salvage any value from his domain/site and pass it along to yours.
If not - a page on his site, with a link back, will do just that - provide a link back from an older/dated and not maintained site which won't do all that much for you in the grand scheme of things.
Hope that helps

Google says Geolocation Redirects Are Okay - is this really ok ?
Our aim is to send a user from https://abc.com/en/us to** https://abc..com/en/uk/ **if they came to our US English site from the UK So we came across this document - https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2014/05/creating-right-homepage-for-your.html We are planning to follow this in our international website based on the article by google : automatically serve the appropriate HTML content to your users depending on their location and language settings. You will either do that by using server-side 302 redirects or by dynamically serving the right HTML content. Will there be any ranking issues/ penalty issue because of following this or because of 302 redirects ? **Another article - **https://www.seroundtable.com/google-geolocation-redirects-are-okay-26933.html

Moz was unable to crawl your site? Redirect Loop issue
Moz was unable to crawl your site on Jul 25, 2017. I am getting this message for my site: It says "unable to access your homepage due to a redirect loop. https://kuzyklaw.com/ Site is working fine and last crawled on 22nd July. I am not sure why this issue is coming. When I checked the website in Chrome extension it saysThe server has previously indicated this domain should always be accessed via HTTPS (HSTS Protocol). Chrome has cached this internally, and did not connect to any server for this redirect. Chrome reports this redirect as a "307 Internal Redirect" however this probably would have been a "301 Permanent redirect" originally. You can verify this by clearing your browser cache and visiting the original URL again. Not sure if this is actual issue, This is migrated on Https just 5 days ago so may be it will resolved automatically. Not sure, can anybody from Moz team help me with this?

Spam signals from old company site are hurting new company site, but we can't undo the redirect.
My client was forced to change its domain name last year (long story). We were largely able to regain our organic rankings via 301-redirects. Recently, the rankings for the new domain have begun to plummet. Nothing specific took place that could have caused any ranking declines on the new site. However, when we analyze links to the OLD site, we are seeing a lot of link spam being built to that old domain over recent weeks and months. We have no idea where these are coming from but they appear to be negatively impacting our new site. We cannot dismantle the redirects as the old site has hundreds, if not thousands, of quality links pointing to it, and many customers are accustomed to going to that home page. So those redirects need to stay in place. We have already disavowed all the spam we have found on the old Search Console. We are continuing to do so as we find new spam links. But what are we supposed to do about this spam negatively impacting our new site? FYI we have not received any messages in the search console.

IT want to do a name server redirect
Hi, I am in a little bit of a pickle, and hope that you clever people can help me... A little background: In April this year we relaunched one of our brands as a standalone business. I set up page to page 301 redirects from the old website to the new branded domain. From an SEO perspective this relaunch went amazingly smoothly - we only lost around 10% of traffic and that was just for a couple of months. We now get more traffic than ever before. Basically it's all going swimmingly. I noticed yesterday that the SSL certificate on the old domain has expired, so I asked IT to repurchase one for us to maintain the 301 redirects. IT are saying that they would prefer to do a name server redirect instead, which would remove all the page to page 301s. They are saying that this would maintain the SEO. As far as I am aware this wouldn't. Please can someone help me put together a polite but firm response to basically say no? Thanks, I really welcome and appreciate your help on this! Amelia

Site that's 301 redirected is ranking for brand
We own a number of foreign TLD domains for our brand. They are all 301-redirected to our main .com branded domain. One of them is appearing in our branded search results, outranking out main .com page. To be clear, this is despite there being a 301 redirect from it to the .com page. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Redirecting location-specific domains
I am working on a project for a physician who only cares about reaching patients within a specific geographic region. He has a new technique at his practice and wants to get the word out via radio spots. I want to track the effectiveness of the radio campaigns without the use of call-tracking numbers or special promo codes. Since the physician's primary domain is very long (but well-established), my thought is to register 3-4 short domains referencing the technique and location so they would be easy for listeners to remember and type-in later. 301 these domains to the relevant landing page on the main domain. As an alternative. Each domain could be a single relevant landing page with a link to the relevant procedure on the main site. It's not as if there is anything deceptive going on, rather, I would simply be using a domain in place of a call tracking number. I think I should be able to view the type-in traffic in Analytics, but would Google have an issue with this? Thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

Partial Match Penalty Site - Move Portion & Redirect To New Site
So I have a site that currently has a partial match penalty from google, I have been working to get it removed...Bad SEO basically my site was submitted to a bunch of bad blog networks..Hopefully it gets lifted soon as we remove and disavow links. That said I was planning on moving a portion of my site to a new site since its not really the focus of the site anymore however still pays the bills. I have also have been building it more of a network of sites..So If I do that and 301 redirect the pages I moved, will the penalty carry? On the current site I planned on using Rel no follow to any links that I may change in the header/menus etc.. Some of these pages I believe have the penalty while others dont. I really just dont want to screw anything else up more then it is? My biggest fear is that its perceived as a blackhat method or something like that? Any thoughts?

Redirecting old domains for SEO ranking?
It's been a while since I read anything seriously out of the box on SEO but I thought I would see what others thought of the bold assertions made in this article. Most of it revolves around buying expired domains and using a 301 to point them, and their juice, to new sites. This guy makes a living doing this so he has to know a bit more than the average Joe but I'm wondering where the other shoe is and when it drops.
