Is it bad to have same templates for all of my EMDs
-
I have been working on EMDs and they are more than 40 EMDs. All 2 KW EMDs with DA around 35
Now they all have same templates. Can it be a problem in future ? (though they don't have similar content)
-
yeah fair enough .. Thanks Andy
-
Consider this, a huge chunk of the websites out there use off the shelf templates (think Wordpress). Even Matt cuts blog is an off the shelf (if edited) template.

hey Gerd, thanks thats helpful. I searched it and found some nice reads! Didn't know about manual reviews. But I guess manual review is somtime good as If you have good quality brand sites (EMDs) then you dont have to worry about machine algo picking your site by mistake.
-
That's a good example. Thanks for sharing.
Though, I guess if something like this happens it wont be template update alone, it might be a combination of low quality, bit of similar pattern seen in content and few other factors like all similar EMDs with similar templates interlinked and so on.
-
thanks for sharing your opinion .

This is already happening - do a search for "google manual review" and have a look at the manual review process. Google currently employs companies to perform manual website reviews based on search terms to classify web-sites.
So although you have the same template, different content and websites, the danger is that your sites from a link-building perspective interlink and a manual review might demote all of them.
Chances are slim as others said, but certainly possible.

no clue seriously! Google is in the teen age and doing all the smart things that a super awesome kid should do to prove himself the best among others (sometime it didn't went well...)
I must not say it is not possible but at the moment there is no such thing like this!
-
IMHO, no I don't believe so.
Consider an ecommerce platform like opencart. The default template is probably being used tens of thousands of time with unqiue content and to penalize all those sites because of it , probably will not improve the end user's experience.
The purpose of algo updates is to improve the user's experience--so the content is the key and not necessarily the template (unless it's extremely poor and affects usability).
-
yeah, thought so but do you think any future update might include anything like that ?
-
I am assuming that you are talking about design template of the EMDs (websites) so in that case from the SEO point of view there won’t be any problem but from the user point of view people might frustrates by going to different domains but finding the same kind of websites... but again every niche’s behavior towards website is kind of different.
from the technical website there is no problem in having the same template!
-
Hi,
So not to worry about the same template, if your site having unique content then same design doesn't harm your ranking.
-
yes, even my sites are ranking at top 5 for most of the keywords but I am afraid some future update might change things!
-
yeah I believe at the moment thers is no problem I am assuming that Google algorithm updates might introduce something like that in future where it might use same templates as one factor to know if the sites are all same, hosted on same servers and liked with each other and hence might be come under spam
-
You could face the risk if your sites are interlinked and a manual review flags the sites as similar and demotes some. I think this is a very rare case and it will be unlikely that it could happen. Just remember, Google has a better understanding of link-graphs then any tool available. I have seen some sites drop due to a manual review (the demotion was not because of same UI though).
I honestly would not worry too much about it as long as your copy, brand, keywords and onpage SEO differs.
-
I am not sure but as per my experience, it is not affect your SEO if you have same template but different content. If you have different content for all your site then Google does not consider your sites as duplicate site. My client have multilingual site having same template but still he ranked in top 10.

Recently re-built our site and changed domain. Now I want to go back to old domain - it it a bad idea?
About a year ago I rebuilt our website and changed our domain name. We rent villas in Tuscany, we used to be 'invitationtotuscany.com'. Then I started doing the same in Provence, and in the italian lakes, so i had further sites called invitationtoprovence.com and invitationtotheitalianlakes.com. But maintaining them was awkward and I wanted to have one site. So I put them all onto invitationto.com and did 301s from the old domains and sites. Now I'd dropped off organic search results and I've also realised that invitationto.com is far less clear as a business address. My inclination is to go back to invitationtotuscany.com - Tuscany is still 80% of our business and have the other areas in there too - optimised for SEO for Provence etc. I'm being told its a really bad idea to change domain, 301 the old one, and then revert to the original domain. But I'm suffering anyway, so I wonder if I sjhouldn't just bite the bullet. A lot of my old good backlinks still point to invitationtotuscany.com (BBC, Sunday Times, etc) and the DA is 33 against 22 on the new one.. All help gratefully received! : )

Is it bad to update product titles and URLs if they are only slightly modified
I am doing some house cleaning on the site and made some minor updates to product titles and a rule was written in and it auto updated the URL to what the product title was with a redirect put in place from the old URL. If this a bad thing and should i leave the URL alone and just update the product title? Then for the ones i did change the Product title and the URL was updated is this a bad thing and should i have just left the URL alone? These are all high ranking popular products so dont want to mess with any rankings going into busy season?

Could the EMD update affect my domain?
My domain is: http://www.freescrabbledictionary.com/ "Scrabble Dictionary" is a huge keyword in my niche where I used to rank top 4. Do you see this domain as possibly being hit by the EMD? My Google Analytics does not show that I was initially hit back in Sept 2012 when it first same out.

Paid directory links--good or bad thing to do for Prof. Services sites?
Yes, I am pretty darn new to SEO and have heard that Google doesn't like Paid directory links. I have looked at some of my competition and they must have paid to get in certain directories as I don't see any backlinks posted on their home pages (usually a badge or icon must be placed on the homepage to avoid a fee.)

Omitting URLs from XML Sitemap - Bad??
Hi all, We are working on an extremely large retail site with some major duplicate content issues that we are in the process of remedying. The site also does not currently have an XML sitemap. Would it be advisable to create a small XML sitemap with only the main category pages for the time being, and then after our duplicate content issues are resolved, uploading the complete sitemap? Or should we wait to upload anything until all work is complete down to the product page level and canonicals are in place? Will uploading a incomplete sitemap be fraudulent or misleading in the eyes of the search engines and prompt a penalty, or would having at least the main pages mapped while we continue work be okay? Please let me know if more info is needed to answer! Thanks in advance!

Will bad things happen if I cancel 301 site redirect?
Hi, please someone help! We have two identical websites, say A & B. Because of the not so good SEO establishment, site B was built and site A was 301 redirected to site B weeks ago. For some reasons, we have to reuse site A, which means we have to cancel the 301 redirection. (Sound a little crazy) So the question are: 1. Can we conduct the action? 2. If we cant, what's the reason? 3. If we can, what would be the best practice? Thanks for help in advance! Plus: we also CARE what would happen to site B if the 301 is cancelled? Will it grow healthy like a new site?
