New website put up and ALL my keywords fell a LOT!???
-
I helped a client redesign their new website and we just went live a couple weeks ago. This morning I checked his campaign and 53 keywords fell DRAMATICALLY. Like 35-50 places down in Google for dozens of keywords!?
I haven't ever seen a drop that's so dramatic when putting up a new site.
Have you ever seen this? Will they bounce back? This site isn't significantly different than the last one.
We did forward two other domains to this new site but that wouldn't make a difference, would it?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Matthew

Matthew, I wrote a piece here a while back about what to make sure you do when relaunching/revamping a website to avoid ranking disaster. You may find it gives you some answers. I would also say, dont panic yet. A website redesign is a huge code change and flux can be expected initially.

I'm sorry. I should have been more clear. No, their domain name didn't change. Thank you very much for all the responses! You gave me some things to think about. I will give it a little time.
Thanks again!

Hi Matthew
Unless those domains had particular bad link profiles or indeed had a penalty put on them, then I think you're right and we can rule out that reason.
I'd first check webmaster tools and see if there are any large crawl errors - you basically want to make sure that all of the pages on the site are accessible by Google, all of the links pointing to the site are working (or redirected to a working URL) and that your 404 page is working (and not returning soft 404s). Should you find something irregular here, that's where I'd start ASAP.
I'm guessing one of these domains was the old website URL? In this case (and apologies if this sounds obvious and you've already done this) I'd double check the 301 redirect has worked properly, so that all the old links pointing to the website are now.
Now, as for the rankings that have dropped - are they across the board and for all keywords, or are they limited to specific keyword groups or specific landing pages? Depending what the result is here this could mean a number of things. When you did the 301 redirect, did you redirect the URLs to the equivalent pages on the new domain, or all to the homepage? If its the latter, is there a chance that the links you were pointing to the old site are now not "powering" the equivalent pages on the new site, as they're going to the homepage?
Similarly, if the rankings that have dropped all go to the same landing page, then there could be a problem on-site or off-site with that page. On-site, Google might not think the new page is very useful to the reader if there is not a lot of content it can crawl and read. Off-site, the algorithm may have devalued some old links to that page if it thinks they are not useful/editorial, such as old directory listings or article site links.
If the drop is across the board, for a number of keywords and landing pages, it could indicate a penalty of sorts, so I would check your webmaster tool messages for any link warnings.
If there's no warnings there, nothing out of the ordinary in terms of errors and your confident that your links are editorial and authoritativ and so would not have had a bunch of links devalued, then I would call for a bit of patience to see if things recover. After all, the Googlebot is going through a bunch of new pages and might have freaked out a little bit - but hopefully I've provided a few things to check in the meantime, in case the drop becomes sustained.
Hope this helps Matthew, wish I could be more of a help.

When you redesigned the site, did you change the URLs?
For example, did you change--
example.com/miami-homes/ to example.com/miami-homes.asp?
And if so, did you 301 redirect all of the old pages to their new locations?
With the info provided, that's my best guess.

Is it the same domain name or just a new site redesign and not a new site.

How to Redirect Old Domain to a New Domain?
One of my clients has chosen a new domain for her website so we will redirect the old domain to the new. I understand that once redirected, most of the authority built up over the years for the old domain will pass through to the new domain. Is this correct? Can this be done through the Wordpress dashboard, say with a plugin perhaps? I have a plugin called 404 Redirected I was going to try to use for this purpose. Finally, the client has other domains (5 total) she has used for one reason or another. She wants to consolidate all of them and have everything redirected to her new domain. Do you see any downside to this in terms of crawling, Google trust and authority? I know there are some user experience issues to deal with, but we're addressing those. I just don't want to do anything that may cause Google not to trust the new domain. Thanks, Dino

Ranking for competitive keywords
Hi Folks, I am relatively new to SEO and I was hoping folks here could give me some guidance/tips on ranking in a competitive keyword space. My client is a health care provider and they wish to rank for terms like 'heart attack' which I believe will be quite difficult due to it being a short tail keyword and it is a very competitive space. Any an all advice and input is greatly appreciated. Regards, Dave

Google result showing old Meta Title / Description even though page view source shows new info.
Hey guys! I'm struggling with why Google is ignoring my Meta Title / Description. I made a pretty drastic change to both about a week ago and on the results it hasn't changed. I'm on first page with several keywords and I think this weird caching is hurting me on where I'm at on the page. Thoughts / Ideas?

Mobile website strategy
Hello all! This question is about mobile websites. Any suggestions are welcomed. The facts: We have recently built a mobile website for our business using the separate mobile urls (parallel mobile website on a m. sub-domain). We are in the service industry and while our customers are most of the time on the go, it is important for them to find the price and order the service as fast and easy as possible. The redirect from desktop to mobile happens when customers are accessing the website with a mobile devices and it's done automatically. The mobile version does not have any content and serves only as a search and order function. The SEO has been made for the desktop website only and we are ranking really well for all competitive keywords in our niche. We want to keep the mobile website simple and clean so we are not planning to add any content on it.The questions: Since we are not planning to have much content on the mobile website, do we need to do any SEO for it? If yes, why? What are the benefits? Should we add content on the mobile website and why? Is there any down-side from an SEO perspective due to the fact that the website redirects to the mobile version? How are the inbound links going to behave in this case? Do we need to link these two websites although there is no risk about duplicate content? (links, canonical tags, sitemaps) Will the mobile website take advantage of the link building made for the desktop version? Should we allow the mobile website to be indexed having the fact that this is just a search & book tool? (at the moment it is blocked via robots.txt) Thanks for reading, looking forward to your answers.

What is the best way to point newly built website on new domain name to the original more well known domain?
Live website on abc.com domain is being totally redone and moved to a new platform. to facilitate full testing and compliance, the new look and content was built on a different url - xyz.com for example. Now that all content is approved and testing, we want people visiting the abc.com domain to see the xyz.com website without necessarily redirecting abc.com to xyz.com What is the best to do this? Thanks all

Website redesign testing environment
An external company is redesigning our website. They have a draft version active in a folder on their website to enable us to view it (example: www.externalcompanywebsite.com/ourwebsite/). There is no permission required to view the website, anyone with the url could just go there. I am not sure if they're using the robots.txt to block crawlers, or if they're blocking specific ip addresses. If the engines are allowed to crawl their website and they index pages of our draft website, does that affect our website negatively in the future once we host it on our domain?

Website platform
I read through this 2008 Moz post and comments: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/choosing-the-right-cms-platform-for-your-website-from-an-seo-perspective but a few years have passed since the discussion. I am looking to completely revamp my site which is primarily static and built on WordPress, and create a rich community environment that is highly interactive and serves the visitor well. The question continues to come up why I'm using WP vs DotNet vs Drupal vs Juumla. The honest answer is: 1) it's easy for a non-tech like me to update, 2) seems like a lot of plugins are available for use, 3) has a high adoption rate (stable) But also, I kind of don't know what I don't know. I wanted to open up the conversation to see why others favor a specific platform as it relates to the following needs: Must be non-tech EASY to use (no high learning curve Lots of plugins and interoperability - can add and remove as needed/times change Must support forum/community needs and conversations Must be able to create granular authentication / permissions for different audiences to see "permissioned" content BONUS if it can interoperate with MS Dynamics CRM (unfortunately, sigh) I've been burned in the past by using teams that had a predilection for a platform simply because they were comfortable with it - not because it was right for my needs. I have a hard time understanding pro/con conversations if the technologies are too focused on the tech and not enough of what the technology delivers, and I'm naturally resistant to technologies that require a techie, rather than a marketing expert to use them.Thoughts anyone? Would love to hear Mozer opinions - thanks in advance 🙂
