Best Practice For Website Redesign & Migration
-
Hi,
I'm looking to redesign my current live website to a new Wordpress site using "Studiopress Enterprise Theme".
I'm new to Wordpress and therefore will be embarking on lots of testing & development.
I do not want to hurt my current live website whilst testing the new Wordpress site. However, it would be nice to bring the test site into the current live environment without changing untold urls, etc.Question
What is the best practice to setup this new Wordpress environment for my domain: www.sampledomain.co.ukHow would you restrict Google, Bing, etc from indexing, etc. whilst testing in the live environment.
What other consideration should I be aware of
Thanks
Mark

Hi Zach,
Thank you for all your help today.
Regards Mark

Ah, you are correct! Sorry I thought you were already on WordPress and just looking to change your theme.

Hi Zach,
Your logic of copying same content and setting would only apply if my current website where previously created in Wordpress.
My current website was created in Dreamweaver and tweaked by hand. It currently has not interaction with a database or Wordpress.
In short, I believe my needs would be to create a new instance of Wordpress.
Thanks Mark

Sounds like you got it, except I would recommend copying over your current site as a starting point vs. installing a fresh copy of WordPress. That way you are starting with the same content and settings and less likely to cause problems with URLs changing. It's also a lot less work if you have a larger site. Just copy of all the files and create a new database, import the data from your current site and make the couple edits mentioned above and you'll be all set. Good Luck!

Thank you Mike & Zach for the feature rich solutions.
With the above information, I will be creating a subdomain along the lines of staging.sampledomain.co.uk
I will further password protect this subdomain using Plesk.
I will tweak the setting of Wordpress to noindex, follow to stop search engines from trying to crawl.I assume Wordpress would be installed in the subdomain staging directory along with all relevant themes and plugins.
Also, I assume for each and every instance of a new domain, a fresh install of Wordpress will be required?
Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
I recommend creating a subdomain like dev.yourdomain.com or staging.yourdomain.com. Password protect the directory so no one ends up on the wrong site and there's no chance search engines will crawl it.
Copy all your files to the subdomains folder, most hosting control panels just create a folder in your main website for subdomains so you can do this in the file manager. Otherwise, download a copy and upload it to the subdomain's folder.
Export your database using PHPmyAdmin, create a new database and import the data into the new database. After you import the data find the wp_options table and edit homeurl and siteurl to be dev.yourdomain.com.
Edit wp-config.php on the dev site to use the new database, user and password.
You should be all set with your dev site at this point and you'll keep your current settings and content so you don't end up with a bunch URL changes.
When you're ready to move the changes to your live site back everything up and do the opposite of the steps above.
I also use the Search and Replace plugin to search the database for http://dev.yoursite.com and replace with http://www.yoursite.com after moving everything over so you don't have any links pointing back to the dev site.

I would install your new site on a subdomain and then push it to your live site once all of your redirects are in place. Here is a great article about moving your wordpress site from dev to staging to production. <a>http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress </a>
I hope that helps!

Hi Mike,
Thank you for the response.
How would I go about creating a staging site? I'm new to this...Mark
-
I would recommend that you work on your new website on a staging site (that is the standard operating procedure for a website redesign) that is locked against robots. You can either inject into the header of everyone of your pages or you can (recommended) install a plugin that will make sure that your site is not indexed until you are ready. A word of caution though, don't forget to change the tag to after you are done. This Q/A is filled with people wondering why Google hadn't indexed them after they failed to do so.

Best URL when adding an SSL certificate . . .
Our (small) company is a little late to the party on this, and we've only just realised that we're better off with an SSL certificate for our website. (Yes I know, I know, but we dropped SEO some time ago after getting severely bitten by a certain Penguin, and are only just making tentative step back to it after those intervening years, so we're running to get back up to date with these things.) This has now been implemented, but our web guy has dropped the 'www' element during the process. Our http://domain.com address has always historically been redicrected to our main http://www.domain.com address. Now our web guy has implemented the SSL cert, our website URL is appearing as https://domain.com, and he has redirected the http://www.domain.com to that new URL. Obviously all our historic (and more recent) link building has been to the http://www.domain.com address. Is this an issue, should the new Https URL keep the 'www', or does it make no difference what so ever? Conversely could it actually be of benefit dropping the 'www.' because our keyword specific product URL's are now 4 characters closer to the http and 4 digits shorter? Finally, on the links we have control of (professional trade associations etc) do we need to ask them to change the links to the new Https address, or does the transition from Http to Https make no difference?

How to prevent development website subdomain from being indexed?
Hello awesome MOZ Community! Our development team uses a sub-domain "dev.example.com" for our SEO clients' websites. This allows changes to be made to the dev site (U/X changes, forms testing, etc.) for client approval and testing. An embarrassing discovery was made. Naturally, when you run a "site:example.com" the "dev.example.com" is being indexed. We don't want our clients websites to get penalized or lose killer SERPs because of duplicate content. The solution that is being implemented is to edit the robots.txt file and block the dev site from being indexed by search engines. My questions is, does anyone in the MOZ Community disagree with this solution? Can you recommend another solution? Would you advise against using the sub-domain "dev." for live and ongoing development websites? Thanks!

URL & Link Hierarchy - juice flow direction from backlinks?
Our site is very regional, so we focus all of our seo efforts on each of these region landing pages. For Example: domain.com/toys/us/ca/san-francisco We added an informational page (ex. reviews) and gave it a url like this: domain.com/toys/us/ca/san-francisco/reviews Question: Will external backlinks to domain.com/toys/.../reviews provide any link juice value to it's hierarchical parent page: domain.com/toys/us/ca/san-francisco?

SEO Tips for Affiliate Website
Hi all , I would just like to have an expert Opinion on SEO for Affiliate Website . Basically if I list all Third party products (Amazon/Affilate Window etc ) on my website and then the customer will be redirected to the Affiliates website to make a Purchase will there be an issue with SEO (Lots of Outgoing Url's) and Will the website not rank for Important keywords or will it be hit by any penalty ? I heard it's not good for SEO , any work around this ? If this is case How come cashback Sites rank well with no issues , although the concept is basically the same ? Any Tips or Advice appreciated as how to get this done safe . My Preferred Option would be with Magento Shopping Cart or second option would be with Wordpress Cart only in case this provides some SEO benefits over Magento by some plugins .

Duplicate content on websites for multiple countries
I have a client who has a website for their U.S. based customers. They are currently adding a Canadian dealer and would like a second website with much of the same info as their current website, but with Canadian contact info etc. What is the best way to do this without creating duplicate content that will get us penalized? If we create a website at ABCcompany.com and ABCCompany.ca or something like that, will that get us around the duplicate content penalty?

For A Corporation With 3 Distinct Business Divisions, Is It Better To Go With 1 Domain & 3 Sub-Domains, 1 Domain & 3 Folders, or 3 Domains for SEO Purposes?
Hi, I am working on a project right now for an existing client, we have one domain up and running well, they want to create an 'umbrella' site to cover three current business divisions and roll everything up under that main site, including the existing site on a totally different domain (would migrate over and 301 redirect from current domain). From what I've researched, I am inclined towards one main domain with three sub-domains due to the amount of content for each business division being significantly different enough that it seems to deserve separation from each other. However, in terms of SEO and maintaining consistent domain authority, would anyone recommend it be better to structure this as just folders/categories falling under the main domain instead of separate sub-domains for each division, and focus keyword targeting on pages tailored to that end within the main domain structure rather than spreading out link-juice to different sub-domains? Thanks!
