Need advice re: selecting an Ecommerce platform
-
Hi. I am responsible for choosing an ecommerce platform and overseeing the implementation of a large ecommerce site. The site will have tens of thousands of products and will be fairly complex.
Eventually the site will integrate with the suppliers back end inventory/order management system, which is some sort of custom Windows/.NET system. (I'm not very technical if you haven't noticed....)
Primarily I want a platform that is SEO friendly, and I have to be sure that the site is developed properly from an SEO and usability perspective. I thought I would go with an asp.net solution (aspdotnetstorefront, specifically) to facilitate the future integration, but I am questioning this choice after reading some of the comments I have found here at SEOMoz.
So is asp.net really a bad choice SEO-wise? I almost considered Magento, but was having trouble finding a good solution provider to work with. I also worried about integration issues down the road.
I would appreciate any advice or input anyone may have.
Thank you!

Thank you Keri, I had read about speed issues with Magento before, but I thought they had been mostly resolved.
I think I am going to stick to my asp.net solution..... it's a decision, anyway.

Tyler,
Thank you- I didn't even notice that the providers were classified as Enterprise etc. I started at the top and was immediately priced out of the market!

You might look at this question regarding ecommerce. http://www.seomoz.org/q/what-is-the-most-seo-friendly-ecommerce-cms-platform-available-today
In the answers, there is someone using Magento with 60,000 products between two sites. Speed has been a large problem, though it looks like a recent update has helped. You might contact that poster, as it looks like s/he could offer a lot of first-hand experience.

I don't know if you looked here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/partners/find/solution-partners/united-states/
But this is the route I used to find my service provider. I would go to the last page and start there with professional providers not enterprise. They will work on the free community version without too much trouble.
The biggest question when talking to these people is "what kind of companies do you normally work with" - if it sounds similar to your situation that's good!
If I answered your question please mark "this answered my question"
Thanks

Thank you for your response. If you know of any good Magento solution providers, and wouldn't mind sharing that would be very helpful.

Hello,
You have identified my two favorite ecommerce platforms. I opted for magento and am very pleased with the site, usability and seo. I think you will find asp.net a good choice too. Either way you will need to find a good provider. The provider list at magento is long and there are some good ones in there. Mostly asking around 4,000$ and up to work with them. Both Magento and Asp.net as excellent choices and will fit any store owners needs. Don't worry about integration down the road. Unless there are some technical things you need done.

Urgent help needed for site move with major ranking loss
URGENT HELP/ADVICE NEEDED I am so stressed and worried about my website domain change. I desperately need advice as soon as possible. I will try my best to keep this as brief as possible. I have owned and operated my punk clothing business online at the URL toofastonline.com for 15 years now. And for a long long time we ranked #1 for punk clothing on Google & life was good. However, thanks to the arrival of several cheap marketplaces and other unanticipated changes our ranking dropped considerably. The last few years have been extremely hard on us, to say the least, we came really close to losing the business altogether. But finally after lots of hard work & long hours, things started to improve. Ranking went back up, and we were busy again. I had been toying with the idea of buying the domain TooFast.com for about 10 years, but I never had the money to do it until this now, so I made the leap and as of Jan 9, toofastonline.com became toofast.com. Unfortunately, I now know that I set up the domain change hastily, without doing any of the pre-work Google suggests to do. I didn’t know it then but I did it wrong. And our site which wasranking #7 for punk clothing on Jan. 8th is now number 51 and today is only Jan 24th! I AM PANICKING. I have looked for help, posting jobs on Shopify Experts site several times now, opening accounts with MOZ and SEM Rush, spending countless hours on the phone with GoDaddy, Shopify and even long chats with Google. I have spent all day everyday for the past two weeks trying fix everything to no avail. No one can start on my site issues fast enough. And I have been given so much wrong information that I feel like I have done irreparable damage. I was (am) not qualified to make this kind of a site change alone. Too much was done too fast and without any real working knowledge Google SEO. My brother was the SEO guy and since he left the business I have just been struggling along with it, just trying to keep my head above water. So now for the big question: Should I temporarily change my Shopify stores domain back to toofastonline.com? This way I couldstart at the beginning, fix all the 404 redirects, fix the 301 redirects, clean up code, get the site in top working condition, and then, as Google suggests in theirGoogle Search Console Change of Address Toolstart to do the change of address in small sections, I can not afford to make any more reckless decisions. I have started and stopped, updated, fixed, changed and tried to fix again too many times now. I dont want Google to think I am trying something shady.. I’m not, I just don’t know what I’m doing, and I need help. Here is as much info as I can think of, I am more than willing to pay for help or do the work myself, as long as what I am doing is the right thing. Any and all help/advice/offers are welcome! How to target slight variations in ecommerce store
Hi friends, I'm trying to target a variety of keywords for an e-commerce/woocommerce store. These keywords have slight differences, and I have a writer to come up with a paragraph or two of unique content for each SEO landing page. I plan on making them with WordPress pages, and linking them with in the content to other related blog posts and product categories. Would it be best to make individual landing pages for terms that vary like: mens wallets under $100 mens wallets under $50 mens wallets under $25 mens leather wallets qaulity mens wallets affordable mens wallets buy mens wallets online shop mens wallets online Should these each be individual pages? How should I link these to the main navigation? or Should I interlink them elsewhere?

Advice on URL structure for competing against EMDs of a hot keyword
Here is the question, illustrated with an example: A law client focuses on personal injury. Their domain is nondescript. The question comes into the URL structure for an article section of the site (I think I know what most people here will say, but want to raise this anyway). This section will have several hundred 'personal injury' articles at launch, with 100+ added each month by writers. Most articles do not mention 'personal injury' in the titles or in the content, but focus on the many areas in which people can hurt themselves :-). Spreading a single keyword emphasis across many pages/posts is considered poor form by many, but the counter-argument is that hundreds of articles, all with 'personal injury' in the URL, could increase the overall authority of the site for that term (and may compete more strongly with EMD competitors). For instance, let's say Competitor A has this article: www.acmepersonalinjury.com/articles/tips-if-in-car-accident And we had the following options: Option A: www.baddomain.com/articles/tips-if-in-car-accident Option B: www.baddomain.com/personal-injury-articles/tips-if-in-car-accident Of course, for the term "car accident", Option A seems on equal footing with the ACME competitor. But, what about the overall performance of the "personal injury" keyword (a HOT keyword in this space)? Would ACME always have an advantage (however slight) due to its domain? Would Option B help in this regard? The downside of course is that this pushes "car accident" further down in the URL string, making all articles perhaps less competitive on their individual keywords.
