How would you optimize a new site?
-
Hi guys, im here to ask based on your personal opinion.
We know in order to rank in SEO for a site is to make authority contents that interest people. But what would you do to increase your ranking of your site or maybe a blog post?
leaving your link on blogs comment seem dangerous, nowadays. Is social media the only way to go? Trying to get people to write about you? what else can be done?
-
First of all, all comment sections I have ever seen on blogs are nofollow links so they are really a waste of time in terms of SEO, in terms of driving traffic they are ok.
Spend time writing quality over quantity content, but more importantly when writing it have a list of news sites / blogs / contacts in mind who you are planning on outreaching the article too.
The hardest part is the outreach, anyone can write a great article, but you need to get it picked up and distributed. In an ideal world, you would all ready have made contact with the journalists before hand and see what articles they want.
IMO journalist are very busy and if you can provide them with a great article which happens to include a link to your site, if they are rushing to hit a deadline, then you have a higher % chance of it being accepted on their site.
Social media the way to go: depends on what industry you operate in some industries this could be a complete waste of time. Especially if you are a B2B company. Plus with Facebook's latest algorithm update its actually quite hard to get a social media post in front of your audience.
Biggest tip would be, quality articles over quantity and spend as much if not more time on outreach to relevant blogs, websites to get your content picked upto and linked to.

Are bloggs published on blog platforms and on our own site be considered duplicate content?
Hi, SEO wizards! My company has a company blog on Medium (https://blog.scratchmm.com/). Recently, we decided to move it to our own site to drive more traffic to our domain (https://scratchmm.com/blog/). We re-published all Medium blogs to our own website. If we keep the Medium blog posts, will this be considered duplicate content and will our website rankings we affected in any way? Thank you!

Scraped site, hijacked searches for business name.
Hello, I have a site that was scraped (possibly by a competitor's seo company), who then built links to the duplicate site. When people do a search for the name of the business the scraped site is all that comes up along with the usual third-party sites. They seem to take the site down and put it back up every couple of weeks to maintain the rankings in Google. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Search: LIC Dental Associates Scraped site: old-farmshow.net Legit site: licdentalassociates.com Thanks, Emery

Whitehat site suffering from drastic & negative Keyword/Phrase Shifts out of the blue!
I am the developer for a fairly active website in the education sector that offers around 30 courses and has quite an actively published blog a few times a week and social profiles. The blog doesn't have comments enabled and the type of visitor that visits is usually looking for lessons or a course. Over the past year we have had an active input in terms of development to keep the site up to date, fast and following modern best practises. IE SSL certificates, quality content, relevant and high powered backlinks ect... Around a month ago we got hit by quite a large drop in our ranked keywords / phrases which shocked us somewhat.. we attributed it to googles algorithm change dirtying the waters as it did settle up a couple of weeks later. However this week we have been smashed again by another large change dropping almost 100 keywords some very large positions. My question is quite simple(I wish)... What gives? I don't expect to see drops this large from not doing anything negative and I'm unsure it's an algorithm change as my other clients on Moz don't seem to have suffered either so it's either isolated to this target area or it's an issue with something occurring to or on the site? If our site hasn't been hit with the Phantom Update, are we clear?
Our SEO provider created a bunch of "unique url" websites that have direct match domain names. The content is pretty much the same for over 130 websites (city name is different) that link directly to our main site. For me this was a huge red flag, but when I questioned them and they said it was fine. We haven't seen a drop in traffic, but concerned that Google just hasn't gotten to us. DA for each of these sites are 1 after several months. Should we be worried? I think yes, but I am an SEO newbie.

More than one site in same industry
A client wants to have 3 sites in the same industry with a lot of overlapping keywords. Is that white hat? Will Google mind?

Is widgetbait no longer valid at all according to the new quality guidelines?
Google recently updated their quality guidelines. I found this example of something that was against the guidelines very interesting: "Links embedded in widgets that are distributed across various sites, for example:

Visitors to this page: 1,472
car insurance" So, what do you think? Are the links against the guidelines? Or the fact that the link is using an anchor texted keyword? I personally don't see the problem with producing a great widget and putting a link on the bottom saying, "Provided by example.com", but then again it's sort of a self made link. On the other hand it's not completely self made because a webmaster has to like the widget enough to embed it. Thoughts?1 -
