URL Structure Q - /UniqueURL/ProductA or /SubcategoryURL/ProductA?
-
Hi Mozers,
I have a niche ecommerce site http://www.ecustomfinishes.com that sells custom barn wood furniture. I have about 600 products online. 2 weeks ago I started rewriting my urls from /subcategoryurl/ProductA to /UNIQUEURL/productA for my individual products,
For example for my subcategory farm tables (150 products) I had
- /rustic-farm-tables/productA,
- /rustic-farm-tables/ProductB ...."rustic-farm-table" about 150 times.
2 weeks ago I started changing the 150x "/rustic-farm-table/" to a more descriptive URL such as
- /white-farm-table/producA
- /rustic-square-dining-table/ProductB
- /Black-harvest-table/ProductC
Here is why I am need advice:
- I have 1181 pages,
- the page with the most entrances with "rustic-farm-tables" is #31/1181 based on entrances. the 2nd most is #71/1181
- Alternatively, I have 13 table product pages such a as /12ft-Rustic-Farm-Dining-Table-p/12-foot-table-with-inlay.htm" that get more entrances than any product that includes "rustic-farm-tables"
- Since changing the urls to be product specific, my overall traffic has dropped 20%!!!
So here is my question:
- do i continue to have the /UNIQUEURL/product be unique to the product, which is consistant amongst my best preforming pages, yet has dropped my traffic 20% in the last 2 weeks, OR do i keep /SAME-URL/product which written as a best practice, and be happy with the traffic I had?
- Could the 20% drop just be a temporary shock? Why would this happen?
This would be a good long tail/head term experiment. Try to get more head terms, or do what you can do focus on long tail. I hope i was able to explain this well, I say follow the best practices of my best preforming pages, however the 20% drop has me worried.
Thank you in advance for your help

Hi Simon,
Thank you for your response. I understand the google algo update, and according to matt cutts it seems like this is for urls that are intended to pick up on one search, like www.seohelpinmassachussetts.com, but wouldnt effect website.com/seo-help-in-mass.
To your second comment, my apologies if I did not explain clearly enough, but the driver for my changes is that some of my product pages are getting a lot of entrance traffic and most are getting very very little traffic. I want more entrances for the product pages, so i am replicating what is working. Specifically, all/most of the pages that are getting the high entrances have uniqueurl/product, whereas the ones with /subcategory/product are all getting very little. The shock is my drop in traffic, despite replication of what is working best for my pages. This posted question is to see if anyone has any reactions suggestions or cautions before i make this major adjustment to my site.
best,
Chris

Hi Chris
Your timing was quite unfortunate as Google rolled out 2 fairly major algorithm changes on 27th Sept - 2 weeks ago today. This may have muddied the waters a little with regards to understanding the reason for your drop in traffic.
It is always quite risky doing a lot of URL re-writing at once - presumably you put 301 redirects from the old to new URL structure? (in case you didn't that is a crucial step in altering the structure of your URLs / changing page names, and may be related to the traffic drop - some useful pointers on that here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/transferring-to-new-url-structure-301-existing-ones)
I am not sure I understand your driver for doing the changes - the URLs were already unique - as long as the productA name is relevant, unique and descriptive then it probably doesn't warrant too much time changing things.
I'd suggest keeping the same-url/product structure and ensure your other on-page SEO is tight and focus on trying to create some new unique interesting content to go with your products to make them stand out. Maybe pictures / stories of some of your furniture in the home environment or something along those lines
Cheers
Simon

Referral Data Q's
1. We recently ran a promotion on both FB and Reddit, which is https, linking to our non-https site. We utilized UTM links to our landing page. Our GA campaign data returned extremely low hits in comparison to what we actually received (and recorded via FB/Reddit dashboard). Obviously our Direct traffic spiked during these times, caused by a secure to nonsecure referral, I'm sure. I'm also noticing a spike in referral traffic from lm.facebook.com that correlates to the ad times. Does this mean Facebook's link shim is stripping away my UTM data? My question is why we receive SOME properly UTM-tagged referral traffic in our campaigns? What's allowing some of it to go through? 2. I've tagged our email signature links with UTM as well, hoping to clean up some of our Direct traffic. I understand that external clients like Outlook and Thunderbird likely won't pass referral data, but do hosted clients like Gmail, Yahoo, and such? And if so, would the https to http difference obstruct this again? I'd love some insight onto these questions, especially if I'm off the mark with a few of my assumptions there.

Why google stubbornly keeps indexing my http urls instead of the https ones?
I moved everything to https in November, but there are plenty of pages which are still indexed by google as http instead of https, and I am wondering why. Example: http://www.gomme-auto.it/pneumatici/barum correctly redirect permanently to https://www.gomme-auto.it/pneumatici/barum Nevertheless if you search for pneumatici barum: https://www.google.it/search?q=pneumatici+barum&oq=pneumatici+barum The third organic result listed is still http. Since we moved to https google crawler visited that page tens of time, last one two days ago. But doesn't seems to care to update the protocol in google index. Anyone knows why? My concern is when I use API like semrush and ahrefs I have to do it twice to try both http and https, for a total of around 65k urls I waste a lot of my quota.

How to turn on persistent urls in WordPress?
I'm using an appointment form on my website and I have the option to add a referral url to form submissions so that i know which pages the form submission came from. I need to be able to distinguish between organically generated form submissions and those that come in via AdWords. If referral url shows the AdWords tracking code i know the form submission came in from AdWords. My problem is that when a visitor comes in after clicking an ad and then visits another page on my website that AdWords tracking code disappears from the url. I was told that there was a way to turn on persistent urls in WordPress but I can't figure out how to do it. I'm assuming that if i turn persistent urls on the AdWords tracking code will remain on every subsequent url that they visit on my website. Is this true? Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

URL Structure for Study Guides
I'm creating study guides for various musicals, plays and operas. A few issues: I want to easily view in Google Analytics data for all study guides, data at the category level (musical, play, opera) and data for an individual show. I want urls to be as short as possible for usability purposes. Some show titles are the same for shows in different categories. For example, there is the play Romeo and Juliet but there is also an opera Romeo and Juliet. Each study guide contains multiple sections that will live on different URLs (overview, context, plot summary, characters) What would be the ideal URL structure? Here's what I was currently thinking we should use: /show/play/romeo-juliet/ /show/play/romeo-juliet/context /show/play/romeo-juliet/plot /show/play/romeo-juliet/characters

When to note Keyword improvement/decline?
Every report we have fluctuations in our rankings, but the majority of them are only a few places up or a few places down. Other than first page and top 3, when do you all start noting fluctuations (good or bad)? Would you start at 5, 10, 20 etc? Thanks, Ruben

Uptick in not tracked conversions / anyone have a list of things that google analytics will not track
There seems to have been an uptick in users on our site not being tracked in Google Analytics cause I see a lot more un-tracked revenue in the last 6 months then I used to. I know analytics is still working as it has been tracking a normal amount of visits but I assumed there might be a reason less would be actually showing up in analytics (mabye a change is what is being reported as organic). I know a lot of stuff goes into "not provided" such as logged in search and stuff like that but is there a list of all of the ones that go into not provided and all that just do not get tracked (javascript not enabled, iOS?). If it could be something else as well let me know. Thanks for the help!

My first campaign identidied long URLs
Hello! 🙂 I've just created my first campaign, and the crawling proccess have detected posts with long URL (more than 70 characters). If I change it, i.e., alter the URL's, can some problem happens to my blog? Or do I have to disconsider this problem and just "work correctly" from now on? Thanks in advance for your help!
