Crawling/indexing of near duplicate product pages
-
Hi,
Hope someone can help me out here. This is the current situation:
We sell stones/gravel/sand/pebbles etc. for gardens. I will take a type of pebbles and the corresponding pages/URL's to illustrate my question --> black beach pebbles.
- We have a 'top' product page for black beach pebbles on which you can find different types of quantities (differing from 20kg untill 1600 kg).
- There is not any search volume related to the different quantities
- The 'top' page does not link to the pages for the different quantities
- The content on the pages for the different quantities is not exactly the same (different price + slightly different content). But a lot of the content is the same.
Current situation:
- Most pages for the different quantities do not have internal links (about 95%)- But the sitemap does contain all of these pages.
- Because the sitemap contains all these URL's, google frequently crawls them (I checked the logfiles) and has indexed them.
Problems:
- Google spends its time crawling irrelevant pages --> our entire website is not that big, so these quantity URL's kind of double the total number of URL's.
- Having url's in the sitemap that do not have an internal link is a problem on its own
- All these pages are indexed so all sorts of gravel/pebbles have near duplicates.
My solution:
- remove these URL's from the sitemap --> that will probably stop Google from regularly crawling these pages
- Putting a canonical on the quantity pages pointing to the top-product page. --> that will hopefully remove the irrelevant (no search volume) near duplicates from the index
My questions:
- To be able to see the canonical, google will need to crawl these pages. Will google still do that after removing them from the sitemap?
- Do you agree that these pages are near duplicates and that it is best to remove them from the index?
- A few of these quantity pages do have intenral links (a few procent of them) because of a sale campaign. So there will be some (not much) internal links pointing to non-canonical pages. Would that be a problem?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
Best!

Hi Joseph, thanks for your reply, really helpful! 301 is not really an option, because these quantity URL's are sometimes used for promotions and need to be reachable. Therefore I guess canonicals are the second best solution.
We will implement the solution I described and see what will happen. Thanks again!

Hello there,
To answer your questions,
1. Google will still crawl your pages even if it's not from the sitemap unless you specify disallow from your robots.txt
2. If they are similar content with the main difference at "quantities" couldn't you consolidate them into one single page that lists all the quantities your company sell in and then 301 redirect the other pages to the consolidated one?
3. It doesn't seem like going to be causing any problem nor hurting your SEO performance, but you could always change these link to the canonical link.
Hope this helps,
Joseph Yap

Does redirecting a duplicate page NOT in Google‘s index pass link juice? (External links not showing in search console)
Hello! We have a powerful page that has been selected by Google as a duplicate page of another page on the site. The duplicate is not indexed by Google, and the referring domains pointing towards that page aren’t recognized by Google in the search console (when looking at the links report). My question is - if we 301 redirect the duplicate page towards the one that Google has selected as canonical, will the link juice be passed to the new page? Thanks!

Best way to link to 1000 city landing pages from index page in a way that google follows/crawls these links (without building country pages)?
Currently we have direct links to the top 100 country and city landing pages on our index page of the root domain.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
I would like to add in the index page for each country a link "more cities" which then loads dynamically (without reloading the page and without redirecting to another page) a list with links to all cities in this country.
I do not want to dillute "link juice" to my top 100 country and city landing pages on the index page.
I would still like google to be able to crawl and follow these links to cities that I load dynamically later. In this particular case typical site hiearchy of country pages with links to all cities is not an option. Any recommendations on how best to implement?0 -
Why do I have so many extra indexed pages?
Stats- Webmaster Tools Indexed Pages- 96,995 Site: Search- 97,800 Pages Sitemap Submitted- 18,832 Sitemap Indexed- 9,746 I went through the search results through page 28 and every item it showed was correct. How do I figure out where these extra 80,000 items are coming from? I tried crawling the site with screaming frog awhile back but it locked because of so many urls. The site is a Magento site so there are a million urls, but I checked and all of the canonicals are setup properly. Where should I start looking?

Is there a way to no index no follow sections on a page to avoid duplicative text issues?
I'm working on an event-related site where every blog post starts with an introductory header about the event and then a Call To Action at the end which gives info about the Registration Deadline. I'm wondering if there is something we can and should do to avoid duplicative content penalties. Should these go in a widget or is there some way to No Index, No Follow a section of text? Thanks!

Duplicate currency page variations?
Hi guys, I have duplicate category pages across a ecommerce site. http://s30.postimg.org/dk9avaij5/screenshot_160.jpg For the currency based pages i was wondering would it be best (or easier) to exclude them in the robots.txt or use a rel canonical? If using the robots.txt (would be much easier to implement then rel canonical) to exclude the currency versions from being indexed what would the correct exclusion be? Would it look something like: Disallow: */?currency/ Google is indexing the currency based pages also: http://s4.postimg.org/hjgggq1tp/screenshot_161.jpg Cheers,

What do you do with the page of a product that has been deleted?
As anyone know with an ecommerce website, products are constantly being added and removed. Once products are removed, the corresponding product pages are not reachable. Currently, I am redirecting to the Search page, if a product page is reached, whose corresponding product has been deleted. I am not sure if that is the correct, recommended technique from a SEO perspective. Should I try to show related products on the redirected page? Does anyone here know what is the best thing to do with this product page?

Duplicate Page Content / Titles Help
Hi guys, My SEOmoz crawl diagnostics throw up thousands of Dup Page Content / Title errors which are mostly from the forum attached to my website. In-particular it's the forum user's profiles that are causing the issue, below is a sample of the URLs that are being penalised: http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=1308 I thought that by adding - http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp to my robots.txt file under 'Ignore' would cause the bots to overlook the thousands of profile pages but the latest SEOmoz crawl still picks them up. My question is, how can I get the bots to ignore these profile pages (they don't contain any useful content) and how much will this be affecting my rankings (bearing in mind I have thousands of errors for dup content and dup page titles). Thanks guys Gareth

Static index page or not?
Are there any advantages of dis-advantages to running a static homepage as opposed to a blog style homepage. I have be running a static page on my site with the latest posts displayed as links after the homepage content. I would like to remove the static page and move to a more visually appealing homepage that includes graphics for each post and the posts droppping down the page like normal blogs do. How will this effect my site if I move from a static page to a more dynamic blog style page layout? Could I still hold the spot I currently rank for with the optimized index content if I turn to a more traditional blog format? cheers,
