Network of sites
-
Hi guys,
Wanted to get your opinion. Ran a backlink profile of a client and discovered there is a number of sites that linked to the main site. The number of sites are owned by the client and seems to be built on the purpose of just backlinking, there is footer links (exact match keyword links)
The website aren't linked together in analytics or webmasters but shows up in whois under the same company. I think the best bet is get all those links removed from footer and let the domains expire once it finishes - seems to serve no purpose.
But the bigger question is what are good reasons I can feed back to the client that it's has a negative affect?

Thank you Devanur!

Hi,
Especially since the Penguin update, sitewide links like footer links, blogrolls, links from a network of sites or blogs built with only one intention i.e. to manipulate search rankings etc are a big NO, NO and we should stay away from them by all means. Though even if you have 100 links from a single website, Google might count only one of them and does not care about the rest, if there's a manual check or audit which they do randomly, this might not look good and can invite a penalty. Here you go for more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTjN9x-by-I
Also, as you mentioned that those sites were built only to provide back links to the main site, please have those links removed with immediate effect. As you know, Google is an accredited ICANN registrar, they can find the relation between those sites and the main site by looking that the WHOIS info and if those are being hosted on a shared hosting (sharing a single IP), the relation would be much more evident.
Hope it helps.
Best,
Devanur Rafi.

Linking to the same sites from more than one of my sites, is this bad?
If I work for a company that has more than one website within the same industry and we have separate websites within that industry. An example would be: CarLoans.com HomeLoans.com & PersonalLoans.com The only difference from this example is that we are a B2B Company. My question is: is it bad to acquire links from the same external websites for multiple websites that we own and want to rank for? If I establish a relationship with Forbes or some other website and I can get links to several of our sites, will it ever be bad to link to all of our websites from this one website. I am asking not just for high domain authority website like Forbes, but also for websites that may have a DA in the 30's 40's and 50's as well. Thank you

Redirecting broken backlink to my site
Hello guys, I found an expired domain with inbound links from 41 different root domains, almost all of them from relevant sources. I have 2 ideas in my mind: A) I am thinking about buying this expired domain and place a 301 redirect to a post in my blog who talks about a similar subject.Relevance: let's say the content of the expired domain is about "horses wallpapers" and the content of my site is about "horse transport". Not the same, but a post in my blog could talk about "top 10 horse wallpapers". Do you see what I mean? B) Contact all the webmasters with broken links, alert them and expect they are nice and place a nice link to the post in my blog talking about "top 10 horse wallpapers". What do you think? Should I take A or B? Any other idea? I added a picture with the Domain Rank of the broken links 🙂 Thanks a lot !!! Luis V1LZBC3

Links between own sites cause bad pagerank?
Many people say PR does not matter, but for me its an indicator that links from a domain with higher PR may rank better. My client has a about 4 different travel-sites of very different kinds of travelling. His sites are not ranking bad but all sites have just a PR 0-2 although the content is unique. I made the experience that even sites with few content will have at least a PR of 3 after some years with no SEO effort. One reason is may some part of duplicate content (4 Tours begin in Manaus, so the description for Manaus is on all the 4 Tour pages the same) but another is that the pages have few external links but many of other sites he is owning... like: also check out this -> link to another own site. Question: If I take all these links away (they even don't cause many referrals at all) - will this have a positive effect on rankings? Means trying to have always more external links from not self owned sites is a good start? Thanks for sharing your experiences Holger

Web Designers and SEOs using backlinks from client sites
What are your thoughts on SEOs and web designers putting their own links in the footers of client sites. For the sake of argument, lets assume that the client is happy for the link to be there. I'm referring to the SEO merits of the link being there from an 'irrelevant' website. My belief is that this goes against what Google is looking for and that these are irrelevant links and likely to be picked up and penalised. That's what I believe! However, I see lots of sites offering SEO services that have dofollow links from their client sites, using exact match anchor text and they are all ranking highly. Is it just a matter of time before Google sniffs them out and penalises them for it? Or should I be going through my client sites and adding myself a dofollow link in the footer? (with their permission of course). The highest ranking sites in any UK city do this. If you search SEO Manchester, SEO Leeds etc and find the top ranking sites and check them out on opensite explorer, they are all using a disproportionate amount of dofollow backlinks form client sites.

Pursuing Links on Sites You Have a Link From
Is it a bad idea to spend resources to get a second link from a site that already links to you? It seems like the marginal value of each additional link is much smaller than the first link.

Discrepancy in Site Metrics
I site I've been working on has been up since early January. The domain was not new, but no site or links existed prior. Link building finished 2 months ago. There are about 80 fairly high quality links mostly from unique domains, and the site has been doing well with search engines for some time. OSE lists only 24 of these domains (for all pages on the root domain). OSE stats hardly changed in the last update so here's my question: when will OSE data reflect the current reality?
