Understanding No Follow
-
We manage a couple of sites with 100s of pages...
Most of the sites have content that is not helpful as landing pages but obviously has relevent content related to our desired search terms.
Some of links go off site to another domain.
I am trying to understand the issue of "link juice" and if I gain it or lose it by putting "nofollow" designation on some of the page links.
Specifically, do I increase the value of my pages if I put no follow tags on lower tier links off of these pages.
Here is a page in question - http://www.vahmarketing.com/product/ductless-hoods
Is there a best practice or SEO rule for using "no follow"?
Thanks,
Bob Nance

Hi Bob,
I think you are asking about PageRank Sculpting. There was talk awhile ago about this no longer being practical and that the juice was lost due to changes in the algo. I think SEOmoz ran some tests on this that were inconclusive... so generally I think opinion is still PageRank Sculpting is dead.
Maybe look up some stuff on faceted navigation to deal with the issues you may be having with the site.
Hope this helps.

Hello Bob,
The nofollow keeps your site from passing link juice through the link. We have this option for situations where we either don't want the link juice to flow to the other site, or we don't know who the other site is (ex. comment links). This does not mean that the link will not be followed by the search engine.
If it is a shady site, I would use a nofollow, but I would also question why I am linking to it. It does not hurt your site to have follow links unless they are questionable. I have seen many sites with decent PR that have link pages with 100's of links on them.
In your example I don't see where you are linking to other domains. Are they your other domains? Are they companies that don't need anything. I have not had an instance where linking to a good company has hurt anything.
Is there a best practice?
If it's a good link, let the juice flow, if not, question why you are linking to it.
Linking to a site that is considered an authority or brand in the niche will align your site with that site and could help you in the long run. Birds of a feather.
There are other ways to link to sites without using the a href such as by incorporating javascript, but in a situation like yours I would not even think about it.

No follow links on a blog
Hi On our blog, we have a section called 'Tags'. I have just noticed that these links are all "no follow" links. The tags section does appear on every single page on the blog - is this recommend to have them as 'no follow' links or should I get our developer to change them. Thanks

All other things equal, do server rendered websites rank higher than JavaScript web apps that follow the AJAX Crawling Spec?
I instinctively feel like server rendered websites should rank higher since Google doesn't truly know that the content its getting from an AJAX site is what the user is seeing and Google isn't exactly sure of the page load time (and thus user experience). I can't find any evidence that would prove this, however. A website like Monocle.io uses pushstate, loads fast, has good page titles, etc., but it is a JavaScript single page application. Does it make any difference?

"INDEX,FOLLOW" then later in the code "NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW" which does google follow?
background info: we have an established closed E-commerce system which the company has been using for years. I have only just started and reviewing the system, I don't have direct access to the code, but can request changes, but it could take months before the changes are in effect (or done at all), and we won't can't change to a new E-commerce system for the short to mid term. While reviewing the site (with help of seomoz crawl diagnostics) I noticed that some of the existing "landing pages" have in the code: <meta name="<a class="attribute-value">robots</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">INDEX,FOLLOW</a>" /> then a few lines later <meta name="<a class="attribute-value">robots</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW</a>" /> Which the crawl diagnostics flagged up, but in the webmaster tools says

When I look in OpenSiteExplorer, it says that it hasn't followed any of my internal links... WTF?
When I look at my site in open site explorer, it says it has followed 1 internal link.. I know that opensiteexplorer has updated, because my domain rank has changed since the last time i looked. I figured it just hadn't fully crawled and indexed my links, but considering I have had an account here for over a month, and the site is over 7 months old, I doubt that is the case. My site is www.ontracparts.com can anybody help me here?? Thanks, Tyler

Follow up to Archive of Content
This is a follow up to the Question I ask: http://www.seomoz.org/q/archive-of-content I have decided that I am going to move the articles from example.com (non-commercial) to website.com (commercial) however I was having a think, some of the articles on example.com and ranking well for some keywords, maybe getting around 20,000 visits from natural search, would it be possible when moving this article just to do a 301 redirect from the page with the article example.com to the new website? Hope that makes some sense. Kind Regards,

Would nofollowing the footer throw an unnatural blance between followed and nofollowed links?
I have been getting errors for too many on-page links. All the major navigation pages are found in links within the navigation tabs and are identical to the footer links. So my question is, would nofollowing the footer look unnatural and throw off the balance between followed and nofollowed links on the site and negatively effect SEO?

Does Google follow links in "id" tag?
Hello, For functionality purposes, I need to wrap separate blocks of content with a tag. The main question is whether Google will follow this URL, even though it is not a hyperlink on the page, just a URL used for functionality purposes. We will have 10-20 of these types of span tags with a different URL for each one, and we just want to be sure that Google will not be following these URLs that are not links. Thanks!

Rel canonical with index follow on query string URLs
Hi guys, Quick question regarding the rel canonical tag. I have lots of links pointing at me with query strings and previously used some code to determine if query strings were in the URL and if they were then not to index that page. If there weren't query strings then the page would be indexed and followed. I assume I can now use the rel canonical tag on each of these pages so the value goes to the proper URL minus any query string. However do I need to have the rel canonical tag above the index, follow tag on the page? So URL is site.com/page.html?ref=ABC meta robots is "index, follow" Rel canonical is "site.com/page.html" Does the order of the meta robots and canonical tag matter? Thanks in advance!
