New algorithm change

Anybody else noticed a change in SERP position over the last couple of weeks?
I've dropped a whole page from 6 to 18 and similar drops across the board.
-
No, haven't noticed any fluctuations, I did recently see my impressions increase on a page so I added some custom Infographics and freshened the content.
With the new additions I made on that page I've actually climbed to page one on several key terms. I even got #3 organic and #1 for the map results for "Tucson SEO Onsite" at one point, it fluctuates throughout the day. Perhaps if you did similar and tweaked the page adding to the user experience, yours will react the same and your ranking will improve.

Hi Nathan!
Not over here, in Latin America at least.
Have you changed anything in your site? Content, redirects, descriptions, title, H1/2/3..? Are there any new competitors in serps?

Does the new Google Analytics Search Console Beta tool use API to pull more data?
So my client has been asking for definitive proof of why the search query data provided on Google Search Console does not exactly match up the data presented directly in the Search Console itself. The simple answer is that the Google Search Console is limited to 1000 rows of data. However our client is requesting a Google article/documentation of why the new Search Console beta tool has no row limit (hence much more data for a big website). I know that the Google Search Console API was available before Google announced the new Search Console Beta tool in Google Analytics. I also know this API could pull in more data than the 1000 row limit. However is there any article available (preferably from Google) that Google Analytics is pulling this Search Console data via API? Thanks!

Changes to cookies, August 24 or 25? (organic search not being cookied?)
Hi folks. We've seen a precipitous change in the referral data that we're able to gather from cookies. Specifically: On August 24 or 25, traffic to our site that was cookied as coming from organic search dropped by ~25%, and traffic coming in with no referrer data at all (i.e., it appears to be "direct") rose by roughly the same amount. As far as we can see, we haven't changed anything in our systems that would have caused this (we're not just mis-reading the cookie info), so I'm looking for external reasons. Has anyone else seen this? Or have any ideas why it would happen?

IP address changed, subdomains added - how will affect?
Hello, Two weeks ago we have changed IP address of our website, also we've added new subdomains for static content (like img.domain.com & js.domain.com) and changed the links on the site accordingly. The old IP is also working and the old links are accessible too. For some reason, since the change, we see a SE (google) traffic constant drop everyday. I've read only Google's support (http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=34437) that such change shouldn't affect the ranking anyhow. On the other hand I've consulted with SEO people and was told that such change may affect in the close new feature (for couple of weeks) and then bring the ranking back. I would like to hear another opinion, I want to get back to our board with approved answers. Please advice. Thanks.

How long to wait before judging changes?
After making SEO focused changes (adding/removing internal links, changing nofollow attributes, changing titles, etc) how long should I wait to "judge" the effects of those changes on my ranking?

Google Analytics Site Search to new sub-domain
Hi Mozzers, I'm setting up Google's Site Search on a website. However this isn't for search terms, this will be for people filling in a form and using the POST action to land on a results page. This is similar to what is outlined at http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1012264 ('<a class="zippy zippy-collapse">Setting Up Site Search for POST-Based Search Engines').</a> However my approach is different as my results appear on a sub-domain of the top level domain. Eg.. user is on www.domain.com/page.php user fills in form submits user gets taken to results.domain.com/results.php The issue is with the suggested code provided by Google as copied below.. Firstly, I don't use query strings on my results page so I would have to create an artificial page which shouldn't be a problem. But what I don't know is how the tracking will work across a sub-domain without the _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', '.domain.com']); code. Can this be added in? Can I also add Custom Variables? Does anyone have experience of using Site Search across a sub-domain perhaps to track quote form values? Many thanks!

Statistics, R, and You: Advice for a New Analyst?
Hey SEOMozers! Two prongs to this question; I'll keep it succinct. I've been working as an in-house SEO/SEM Analyst for about 5 months now. While I'm generally savvy at telling the story behind the traffic/conversion data, and making forensic recommendations (I worked in SEO prior to this while in college), ideally I'd like to see my reports read less like these piddly Excel charts and percent change statistics. Ideally they'd look more like Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight blog for the New York Times, or OkCupid's periodic dispatches on OkTrends: visual, statistically-informed, and predictive, the kind of report that under other circumstances might plausibly generate backlinks. Data analysts swear by R for statistical modeling, but is it useful for our Google Analytics data sets, holes and uncertainty and all? Is the steep learning curve worth the effort? Tutorials I've seen online assume a proficiency in programming or statistics that's beyond me, or they're written to support a textbook exercise. Any recommendations for a book, online course, or general resource with more of a niche focus? And a general question about stats too, since it's related: what level would you prescribe if I really wanted to kick this up a notch? I studied a humanity in college and while it helps with the numerical storytelling, I wonder if the practical arcana of Bayesian Methods/abstract probability theorems have a place in Web Analytics. Do they? Are there options for us bushy-tailed young analysts to pick this up without resorting to B School? Thanks in advance!

Analytics bounce rate change
Hi mozzers, I have a little riddle. A few weeks ago the bounce rate on one of our website dropped 90% - from 45 % average to 5 % average. We haven't changed much in the code of the site, layout or anything else. The traffic is pretty stable too. Anyone can guess why? Or have experienced something similar? xOvrb.jpg

Why are we not seeing similar traffic patterns in a new market?
Good afternoon! We have a large real estate site with over 400,000 urls. We do pretty well with long-tailed search terms (like addresses--- 123 Main Street, Atlanta GA) so we get a decent amount of traffic (3,500-4,000 uniques a day). 2 months ago we opened up in a new market (Nashville) and hoped to see similar traffic for that market after a few of months, but so far we haven't. In fact, we only get about 200 visits a day. I can't seem to figure out why it's taking so long for us to generate similar traffic in Nashville that we see in Atlanta. All of the Nashville properties are in our sitemap and are being indexed by Google. Any ideas why we aren't seeing similar effects? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! David
