Slooooow motion SEO impact
-
I could do with some help if anyone's got a minute.
We've got this one client, no matter what we did (and we worked very hard on this site), nothing would really move. You'd get the usual fluctuations, and maybe some very small progress at times. This went on for an age... much, much longer than usual (and it wasn't even that competitive for keywords).
Then suddenly, "Bam!" it shot up like a rocket for all it's main keywords and has stayed there since... more or less (and this was over a year ago). It was as if all the work we'd been doing was building up behind a door and then the door flew open so it could take affect.
Anyway... it seems to be happening again, just to a different client with a different website (at least I hope that's what's happening or it might just stay non-affected by anything we do forever).
We've checked everything. There's no crawling problems, again it's not all that competitive, the site already has some pretty good trust and authority, and it already ranks well for a bunch of stuff. The site and pages have plenty of age behind them too.
Any ideas?

That makes some good sense too. Thanks Bemcapaz. I'll dig around a bit and see if I can find anything on that

Im currently working on two sites. One in a very low competitive keyword and other in a mid competitive keyword.
Whats hapenning is, in the mid competitive keyword site, everything SEO related that I do end up taking effect really quick, the longer I have to wait to see new links showing up or see my changes taking effect is 24 hours.
However in the low competitive keyword site the opposite seems to happen. I change things, create links, but those changes seem to not take any effect.
Maybe those slow motion SEO would be related to the keyword in question, at least, If i were google I would focus my computacional power on the more searched keywords since this is what will reach the biggest ammount of users and so, what will make Google be seen as a good or bad search engine, also would let the keywords with few searchs have their rank updated once a month (or more).
-
Yeah it's hardly competitive at all, that's what's so strange about it. Maybe I just have to wait it out... I hope so anyway.
-
Erm well I guess it depends on how dominant and broad the keywords your going after are.
Are you tracking long tail and still seeing no results?
Comparing to a pre seo report you'd expect to see at least something.
-
Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. You think there might be something in the algorithm to literally target sites at random? Seems a bit unethical of Google as it affects business but I guess there's not a lot we could ever do about it... and they're probably right to do it in the sense that it's for the greater good.
Would you say it is likely that it is another delay like the first one then?
I mean, have you ever SEO'd something for 3 months and seen literally nothing happen from it. It's really been that long now. All other clients have been fine, just this one and the one a year ago. Do you think there could be a chance that it will never move?
-
Yea strange one although I have seen it take month myself with very little improvement and then rapid growth.
At least you can use this as an example to the new client
Good luck man.
-
Once something becomes predictable it can be manipulated.
Google is getting tired of being manipulated
If I was Google I would be adding a random delay on the impact of any possible SEO action that is used to promote the rankings of a website.
It would shut down a lot of the bragging that SEOs are inclined to indulge in.
-
Well it was a while back but no I'm pretty sure there was no major updates.
Both domains, the first one it happened to, and this one date back to around 2000.
I just need to figure something out because I hate having to send reports to the client that make it look like we're doing nothing.
There's just got to be something... it's so weird, like a kink in the hosepipe or something lol
-
Well done first of all, result!
What was the age of the domain?
Otherwise was it around the time of any major updates? It could have been one of the many minor changes to the algo that could have just tipped the balance for you?

Does having active urls with and without trailing .html impact SEO?
A recent update resulted in duplication of urls on our site due to inconsistent url structure: Example: /category2.html and /category2 both active on the site as the same page Will this hurt and should we create redirects using only one version of the url? /category2.html redirect to /category2

Javascript and SEO
I've done a bit of reading and I'm having difficulty grasping it. Can someone explain it to me in simple language? What I've gotten so far: Javascript can block search engine bots from fully rendering your website. If bots are unable to render your website, it may not be able to see important content and discount these content from their index. To know if bots could render your site, check the following: Google Search Console Fetch and Render Turn off Javascript on your browser and see if there are any site elements shown or did some disappear Use an online tool Technical SEO Fetch and Render Screaming Frog's Rendered Page GTMetrix results: if it has a Defer parsing of Javascript as a recommendation, that means there are elements being blocked from rendering (???) Using our own site as an example, I ran our site through all the tests listed above. Results: Google Search Console: Rendered only the header image and text. Anything below wasn't rendered. The resources googlebot couldn't reach include Google Ad Services, Facebook, Twitter, Our Call Tracker and Sumo. All "Low" or blank severity. Turn off Javascript: Shows only the logo and navigation menu. Anything below didn't render/appear. Technical SEO Fetch and Render: Our page rendered fully on Googlebot and Googlebot Mobile. Screaming Frog: The Rendered Page tab is blank. It says 'No Data'. GTMetrix Results: Defer parsing of JavaScript was recommended. From all these results and across all the tools I used, how do I know what needs fixing? Some tests didn't render our site fully while some did. With varying results, I'm not sure where to from here.

Does the url in for your homepage impact SEO
Is there any harm to SEO having a homepage url that is not clean like www.domain.com. For example citi uses https://online.citi.com/US/login.do Does that matter in any way? Would a company like citi benefit from changing to www.citi.com as their homepage?

Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -

Help! Is rel cononical impacting me?
Hi there. My personal site www.adamlewis.info has higher Domain Authority and Moz rank and more linking domains than the top ranking site for my name "Adam Lewis" My landing page /adam-lewis has an A Grade. Yet I am still on page 2 behind what appear to be weaker domains. The on-site report says I am not making appropriate use of Rel Cononical. This is a bit techy for me. Can anyone explain how this might or might not be affecting my ranking for "adam lewis"? Thanks guys! Adam
