Separate IP Address for Blog
-
Our developers are recommending we sign up for a cloud based LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, & PHP) server to install 3rd party software (Wordpress). They said "the blog will be on a separate IP address and potentially can have some impact with SEM/SEO."
Can anyone expand on what impact this might have versus having it on the same IP?

Thanks for the info! It will really help us decide how to proceed.

There are social sharing possibilities available with Tumblr that can help SEO wise, as well as domain authority benefits that come with links from the blog to your existing site.
Andrew Dumont just wrote a post about changing from Wordpress to Tumblr for his personal blog.
As with everything it is a personal decision, but if I were forced to have a separate blog anyway, I think I would most likely go with Tumblr, unless there is some compelling reason to build a new domain from scratch.
Hope that helps,
Sha

This is what I had concluded, but I don't know if the technology issues outweigh the SEO cons. What Sha Menz guessed is correct.

You got it right on the money: "My first impression is that your existing site is under windows hosting and your developers' advice is aimed at ensuring that your Wordpress installation is on a LAMP system."
Why would you recommend Tumblr over Wordpress?
-
Hi William,
Of course your take on what is ideal (and Sparkplug's) is totally correct, but my guess, given that the recommendation is not to move the entire site to the LAMP setup, is that they are faced with a bit of a catch 22.
Obviously without knowing the exact situation it is only a guess, but I would be betting that the main site is inextricably tied to Windows technology which makes it either impossible or cost-prohibitive to switch platforms. If that is the situation, then the proposed solution would be the best option if you definitely require a Wordpress installation.
The obvious alternative, since the blog would be separate anyway, would be to set up a Tumblr blog with links back to the main site.

Well, there you just have plain old Australian ingenuity. Sha, as always, a couple steps ahead. Yes. If they want to install it somewhere else because of server configurations, that may be the issue. From a pure SEO standpoint, like Sparkplug (which I think I will name my next dog), and I mentioned, it's best to have your content fall under the same domain. And that make the most sense from a technical side of things as well. I'd prefer to use one CMS to control an entire site, as well as one hosting solution. But then again, I don't know your situation.

Hi,
My first impression is that your existing site is under windows hosting and your developers' advice is aimed at ensuring that your Wordpress installation is on a LAMP system. This makes total sense.
While it is possible to install and run Wordpress on Windows, the preferred option would always be to use standard LAMP hosting as there are things in WP that will not work as they should with Windows hosting. Most notable of the things that will be a problem is URL rewriting. Running WP on Windows requires a high level of expertise and is likely to require ongoing work, hacks etc over time.
In contrast, Wordpress can be installed and self-managed with great success on a LAMP system.
On the whole I would say that the solution recommended by your developers would be less frustrating and way less expensive than installing WP in a Windows environment (for both you and your developers).
Hope that helps,
Sha

The cons outweigh the pros. It is almost always best to put your blog into a subfolder like www.semoz.org/blog because links that the blog earns count towards helping improve the link authority of your domain.
-
Well, having another site that points to yours from a separate IP address is essentially creating a completely unique website that will potentially pass along some ranking juice.
I'm not entirely clear on what your situation is, but if you are looking at the developers to create a place to create content, I would instead keep your blog under your domain and own that content, use that as thought leadership, and further deepen your brand.
While you won't get "juice" from another website pointing back to you, (which from one site would be insignificant), you would capture all those people, who are interested in that content, more directly.
Again, I would probably need more details as to what they want to do with that second site. But I doubt my answer would change a whole lot.

Blog with all copied content, should it be rewritten?
Hi, I am auditing a blog where their goal is to get approved to on ad networks but the whole blog has copied content from different sources, so no ad network is approving them. Surprisingly (at least to me), is that the blog ranks really well for a few keywords (#1's and rich snippets ), has a few hundred of natural backlinks, DA is high, has never been penalized (they have always used canonical tags to the original content), traffic is a few thousand sessions a month with mostly 85% organic search, etc. overall Google likes it enough to show them high on search. So now the owner wants to monetize it. I suggested that the best approach was to rewrite their most visited articles and deleted the rest with 301 redirects to the posts that stay. But I actually haven't worked on a similar project before and can't find precise information online so I'm looking to know if anyone has a similar experience to this. A few of my questions are: If they rewrite most of the pages and delete the rest so there is no repeated/copied content, would ad networks (eg. adsense) approve them? Assuming the new articles are at least as good quality as the current ones but with original content, is there a risk on losing DA? since pretty much it will look like a new site once they are done They have thousands of articles but only about 200 hundred get most visits, which would be the ones getting rewritten, so it should be fine to redirect the deleted ones to the remaining? Thanks for any suggestions and/or tips on this 🙂

Video and text article on same topic but on two separate pages...
we are creating a video based off the content on one of our web pages. i know it's probably better for the video to be embedded on the same page as the article but if they aren't, what should we do to make sure that we aren't diluting our ranking power? Both pages will be going after the same key phrase...

NAP - is lack of consistency in address elements an issue?
I've been looking at a local business in London and they have multi-sites, each with multiple versions of the same address in their NAP - they're using the correct addresses, with variations in terms of order of address elements (with some missing out London, and some including London) For example, one listing puts the postcode after the city district - another before. Sometimes London is included in the address, though often not (the postal service doesn't include London in their "official version" of the addresses). So the addresses are never wrong - it's just the elements in the address are mixed up a little, and some include London, and some do not. Should I be concerned about this lack of address consistency, or should I try to exact match the various versions?

How to rank for a location/country without having a physical address in that location/country
How do I go about it if my physical address (office) is in Country A but I want to rank my website in Country B, C and D (without having an office or physical address in the countries B, C and D)? I am aware of people setting up virtual offices in other countries/cities and adding them to Google Places/Maps with toll free phone numbers, but I don't wish to do any of that. I know Google will catch up with this one day or the other and punish me hard for trying to play games with it. Is there a way rank a website in another country without actually having a physical location there? If yes, please guide me how to go about it.

How do I get the best from our Blog and build quality links and drive traffic to our site?
We have recently setup a Wordpress focused blog (blog.towelsrus.co.uk) which is very much work in progress. Because of financial constraints we had to host this on a separate sub domain. I need to get to grips with blogs is new to me (only been doing SEO this for 3 months now) and have have read may posts on the forums here that this is one of the best ways to build links and engage the audience. How do I go about getting people to read my blog, and should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?

What's the best .NET blog solution?
I asked our developers to implement a WordPress blog on our site and they feel that the technology stack that is required to support WP will interfere with a number of different .NET production applications on that server. I can't justify another server just because of a blog either. They want me to find a .NET blog solution. The only thing that looks decent out there is dotnetblogengine.net. Has anyone had any experience with this tool or any others like it? Thanks, Alex
