Wrong page version in the index
-
Hi,
my site is currently accessible through URL with and without www.
The Version with www has 10 times more Backlinks (PA 45 vs 38) but is not listet into the google Index.
As far as I know there was never made a google Webmaster account or declared otherwise the version without www to be 'cannonical'.
Basically I think that for SEO reasons it would be much better to declare the with www version to be cannonical and redirect the without www version to it.
My questions are:
Do you have an idea why the with www version is not indexed?
How long does Google usually take to change the version in the index?
Do I risk my site to be thrown out of the index for some days untill the change is made? Thanks in advance.

Hi Sebastian,
Having duplicate content is quite a problem for you. You have two pages with the same content and different inbound links profile, confusing the search engines with it. Resolving this issue (with a canonical or a 301 redirect) will point out the page you are targeting from the two and make it easier to compete with.
301 or a canonical will also provide the link juice flow from one of the pages to the other one.
1. Do you have an idea why the with www version is not indexed?
2. How long does Google usually take to change the version in the index?
3. Do I risk my site to be thrown out of the index for some days untill the change is made?1. If you would be a search engine and see duplicate content from the same provider would you index both?
2. I would say that after resolving this issue, create a Google Webmaster Tools account, submit your sitemap and you should see some change in a few days.
3. After Google will index your canonicals you will have the non-www deindexed and the www version indexed.
Now probably you will see some kind of fluctuation in this process, but after done you should see a comeback soon.
Google won't punish you after you make these changes to help them. Quite logical, right?!
I hope it was helpful,
Istvan

Investigating a huge spike in indexed pages
I've noticed an enormous spike in pages indexed through WMT in the last week. Now I know WMT can be a bit (OK, a lot) off base in its reporting but this was pretty hard to explain. See, we're in the middle of a huge campaign against dupe content and we've put a number of measures in place to fight it. For example: Implemented a strong canonicalization effort NOINDEX'd content we know to be duplicate programatically Are currently fixing true duplicate content issues through rewriting titles, desc etc. So I was pretty surprised to see the blow-up. Any ideas as to what else might cause such a counter intuitive trend? Has anyone else see Google do something that suddenly gloms onto a bunch of phantom pages?

Should I delete a page or remove links on a penalized page?
Hello All, If I have a internal page that has low quality links point to it or a penality. Can I just remove the page, and start over versus trying to remove the links? Over time wouldn't this page disapear along with the penalty on that page? Kinda like pruning a tree? Cutting off the junk limbs so other could grow stronger, or to start new fresh ones. Example: www.domain.com Penalized Internal Page: (Say this page is penalized due to keyword stuffing, and has low quality links pointing to it like blog comments, or profiles) www.domain.com/penalized-internal-page.com Would it be effective to just delete this page (www.domain.com/penalized-internal-page.com) and start over with a new page. New Internal Page: www.domain.com/new-internal-page.com I would of course lose any good links point to that page, but it might be easier then trying to remove old back links. Thoughts? Thanks! Pete

Should I allow index of category / tag pages on Wordpress?
Quite simply, is it best to allow index of category / tag pages on a Wordpress blog or no index them? My thought is Google will / might see it as duplicate content? Thanks, K

301 lots of old pages to home page
Will it hurt me if i redirect a few hundred old pages to my home page? I currently have a mess on my hands with many 404's showing up after moving my site to a new ecommerce server. We have been at the new server for 2 years but still have 337 404s showing up in google webmaster tools. I don't think it would affect users as very few people woudl find those old links but I don't want to mess with google. Also, how much are those 404s hurting my rank?
