Rel canonical or 301 the Index Page?
-
Still a bit confused on best practice for /index.php showing up as duplicate for www.mysite.com. What do I need to do and How?
-
Hi! I'm following up on older questions, and wondering if you got this straightened out or still need a hand. Thanks!
-
I would recommend Barry's original solution as not only does it fix the issue you mentioned, it takes care of a couple of other potential duplicate content issues (slashes elsewhere and www vs non-www)
Marcus's solution should be fine if want to fix the one issue on the single page.mentioned.

You do get small variations in how the server wants the htaccess but give it a go and see if it works.
If you are happy it is working in the browser then there is a free bit of software called webbug that will let you see the HTTP headers to ensure you are getting the 301 permanent redirect returned.
Hope it helps.

Theoretically should work; you can quickly try it to see and change it back if it doesn't work
Doing it your way I've had sites fall over a few times (white page of death), but changing it back fixes things in no time.

so just adding this in should work too right?
redirect 301 /index.php http://www.mysite.com/
I have this already:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [L,R=301] -
Probably the simplest way is to put this in your .htaccess file
RewriteEngine On Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^.*/index.html
RewriteRule ^(.*)index.html$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]For reference the .htaccess file goes in the root of your domain via whatever file transfer program you use and of course replace example.com with your domain
This also makes sure the non-www redirects to the www.
If you get stuck, let me know

Add a canonical URL of www.mysite.com to the homepage (/ & /index.php) & 301 redirect www.mysite.com/index.php to www.mysite.com
That covers both bases and will see the content indexed on the correct page before too long.
Cheers
Marcus

Rel Canonicals not working properly.
We recently implemented rel=canonicals on a few of our pages to prevent query parameters from showing up in the SERPs. The two pages we added the tags to are no longer ranking. The pages used to rank very well for branded terms such as "morningstar direct" and "morningstar sustainability", but now don't show up at all. When you search for the urls specifically, for example "products/direct morningstar" the query parameter is still indexing. Does anyone know why this might be or what we can do to fix this issue? The two pages are www.morningstar.com/products/direct and https://www.morningstar.com/company/sustainability

Wrong page version in the index
Hi, my site is currently accessible through URL with and without www. The Version with www has 10 times more Backlinks (PA 45 vs 38) but is not listet into the google Index. As far as I know there was never made a google Webmaster account or declared otherwise the version without www to be 'cannonical'. Basically I think that for SEO reasons it would be much better to declare the with www version to be cannonical and redirect the without www version to it. My questions are: Do you have an idea why the with www version is not indexed?

How long does Google usually take to change the version in the index?
Do I risk my site to be thrown out of the index for some days untill the change is made? Thanks in advance.0 -
Will rel=canonical cause a page to be indexed?
Say I have 2 pages with duplicate content: One of them is: http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage This page is the one I want to be indexed on google (domain rank already built, etc.) http://www.originalpage.com is more of an ease of use domain, primarily for printed material. If both of these sites are identical, will rel=canonical pointing to "http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage" cause it to be indexed? I do not plan on having any links on my site going to "http://www.originalsite.com/originalpage", they would instead go to "http://www.originalpage.com".

Why this page doesn't get indexed?
Hi, I've just taken over development and SEO for a site and we're having difficulty getting some key pages indexed on our site. They are two clicks away from the homepage, but still not getting indexed. They are recently created pages, with unique content on. The architecture looks like this:Homepage >> Car page >> Engine specific pageWhenever we add a new car, we link to its 'Car page' and it gets indexed very quickly. However the 'Engine pages' for that car don't get indexed, even after a couple of weeks. An example of one of these index pages are - http://www.carbuzz.co.uk/car-reviews/Volkswagen/Beetle-New/2.0-TSISo, things we've checked - 1. Yes, it's not blocked by robots.txt2. Yes, it's in the sitemap (http://www.carbuzz.co.uk/sitemap.xml)3. Yes, it's viewable to search spiders (e.g. the link is present in the html source)This page doesn't have a huge amount of unique content. We're a review aggregator, but it still does have some. Any suggestions as to why it isn't indexed? Thanks, David
