Question about ranking and links
-
Hi,
Some back ground info first: My DA/PA is 42, the competitors who show up in the search engines for the term I am after have DA/PA 55/60.
I have been creating anchor text links which target the term im after through guest blogging usually blogs with DA/PA 40+, I did this consistently with a guest post every 3 days for about a month so that's around 10 guest posts.
And I also did some brand name blog comments, but these were no-follow and added sig to some forums.
This moved me from page 5 to page 1, position 4.
I then stopped and over the last 3 weeks it slipped to position 6 then to position 8.
The competition doesn't look to actively target this term looking at the data from opensite explorer there main anchor text is there brand names.
Why would I be slipping through the results? Not moaning just want to understand why so I can counter it.
I was thinking about going for social signals through a blog to help.

Sounds like that may be part of the issue but I wouldn't expect such high fluctutions. Keep on creating good content, share it and promote it, and keep away from using really anchor intensive keywords.
Best of luck!

Cheers.
1. Checked guest posts and all links are still active and do-follow.
2. Usually the blogs have DA/PA 40+ some have DA/PA 60/80 but I don't know if they have been hit by pen.
3. Yes they do move down and then off the homepage.
4. All 10 have same anchor text, so this may be it.
Looks like it could be #3 maybe even #4 but then I would expect to drop like a fly instead of a slow decline.
I imagine drop 1 was guest posts falling off homepage and drop 2 was even more posts falling off homepage.

I would say there's a couple of factors to consider here:
1. Are all of your guest posts still there / links still in place? Sometimes for whatever reasons these can disappear.
2. Where have you been posting? If you have posts on suspect sites you may find that these can be hit with a penalty / devalued and your links become less valuable.
3. Have your posts been moved from front page to lower pages on the site? If the full post was being displayed on the front page and then became relegated to a subpage this may affect the weight it passes.
4. Did you vary the anchor text? Especially with the penguin update, you need to be varying up your anchor text. If all of a sudden you are getting lots of exact match keywords that don't look natural this may have triggered alarm bells with Google.
Social signals are likely to help with the posts strength, you should be aiming to promote your content on social networks anyway as part of your SEO efforts.
Hope that helps.

Ranking Riddle: Too many anchor text links, or not enough of the right ones???
This question is about one of my ecommerce sites (www.BestDryingRack.com) which is ranking really well for one of it's money words, and not at all for the other. See the attached screenshot for a quick overview of the riddle we are facing.... Looking at the "Anchor Text" tab in my MOZ Campaign or in Open Site Explorer would lead you to think that I have WAY too many links with my #1 money phrase. (clothes drying rack, or laundry drying rack, as they are synonyms). And since my product page doesn't rank at all for that keyword, that's what I thought too. (My home page does show up on page 3 or 4 when Googling clothes drying rack) On the other hand, my #2 money phrase (umbrella clothesline, or outdoor umbrella clothesline) has it's product page ranking quite well in the middle of the first page of Google results. Digging deeper into the links spreadsheet from Open Site Explorer shows that most of the links are NOFOLLOW (which means they don't really count, right?) As the screenshot shows, here is the breakdown of links that count: FOLLOW links with Brand and URL anchor text totals 17 FOLLOW links with #1 money phrase anchor text totals 10, with only 1 to proper product page FOLLOW links with #2 money phrase anchor text totals 3, with all 3 to proper product page So the riddle is... Can we improve the ranking of the #1 money phrase by just getting a small number of matching anchor text links to the proper page? (making it like #2's situation) Or do we also need to get rid of some of the 9 links with the #1 anchor text that are pointing to the home page? (since the home is outranking the proper product page for this phrase) BDR-anchors-040614.jpg

Link Bait - How to use it question?
Hi, Lets say you have two pages, one is your money page which contains products etc and the other is a piece of content used for link bait. Say the link bait works well and you pick up lots of links from it, how do you then benefit your money page from this? I can only think of creating an anchor text link from the link bait back to the money page. Is that usually how this process works?

over the past year so around every corner I discover something new. One the
things I have found are that majority of links to the site is coming from an
outside blog but digging deeper I found that the blog is actually on the same
server as clients. Should I disavow links from that blog or should I leave it
alone?0 -
Total Links vs Google Webmaster Site Links
I am interested why the numbers between SEOmoz and Google are so different. In SEOmoz we only show 17,000ish links from 190ish domains. In Google, we show 200,000+ links from 370 domains. Why is there such a dramatic difference?

Does the ratio of external nofollow links to external "do follow" links matter in terms of SERPs ranking?
My site has an external link nofollow:dofollow ratio of approximately 1:1 That is, there are about as many nofollow external links as "do follow" external links. I have an impression that the ratio of no-follow to "do follow" links is a factor in the way that our website shows up in SERPs. I have the impression from reading a variety of sources, and from looking at Seomoz, that calculate "trust" factors as if they mattered (in SERPs), that seem to value a relatively low nofollow:dofollow ratio. Am I correct about that? Thanks,

Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?
I am trying to increase the number of branded links for a few of my sites since the links are too heavily weighted on anchor text. If so, would you recommend a service like Directory Maximizer?

Great idea to get back links in short order; however the links would be unrelated. . Is it worth the effort . BTW, it's a white hat method. Should I proceed?
I have come up with a very creative way to get some great back links using white hat methods. The problem is that the back links to the site would be to an interior page or external promotional website which then have links back to the main website. What kind of value for the main domain would this potentially achieve. What are peopLes thoughts on this idea?
