Hi Carrol, As Robert has put so well...if it were only that easy:) Seeing rankings go up and then down for new pages (or newly optimized ones) is a pretty common phenomenon, with their freshness giving them a little boost that then dies away.Remember, your SEO will never be a set-and-forget effort. Now that you've done your first work and are seeing confirmation of doing this well by your A+ rating in our tools, take a little moment to celebrate how much you've accomplished and then get ready for your next steps. These may include, but won't be limited to:- Studying your analytics over the coming months to see how users are interacting with your site. This may lead to improvement you can make in both SEO and human usability. How people use your site affects your rankings.- Creating your ongoing content strategy. You may be blogging, creating whitepapers, infographics or other cool stuff to begin to draw steady, valuable, traffic to your site. Having a lively site affects your rankings.- Analyzing your competitors. While the age of your site vs. that of competitors isn't something you can control, you can learn a lot from what your competitors are doing and then figure out how to do it better. Remember, no search engine ranking exists in a vacuum. All the while you are struggling to get to the top, your competitors are doing the same, but if you can make a stronger effort than others who are being neglectful, you can hope to surpass them.- Creating your social media strategy. Find out where your customers are and then figure out how you can participate in and add value to the places they hang out most.- On-going linkbuilding. In competitive markets, this may be a never-ending task. While the effects of some SEO can be seen pretty quickly (within hours or a few days), most efforts are going to take some time to really settle in. A week is definitely not long enough to judge how Google will ultimately respond to the efforts you have made so far, but that's okay, because your efforts are just beginning. Being #18 isn't a bad place to start with a newly optimized website if you are in a competitive market, Carrol, but it does indicate that there will be work ahead of you. By making a steady, consistent effort to continue to grow and improve in as many areas as you can, you will be continuously feeding the bots data that says, "I'm here, I'm active and I'm doing everything I can to be a great resource for visitors." Hang in there. Don't be nervous. Expect this to take time and you'll be approaching the game with the right attitude. Sincerely wishing you good luck!

Carrol,
Oh if it were that easy. Being at A+ for the on page is a good start as that, typically, will put you ahead of a lot of competitors. There are a lot of factors that go into who ranks where on page one for example. If after one week you are "stuck" in positions 15 to 20 you are likely on the right track.
Now, you need to look at the other factors that affect what is going on. What types of links do the sites above you have? How does the quality of your content compare to theirs? How long have their domains been established? Do they have exact match domains? Etc.
In SEO, I like to say we strive to be at 100% while understanding that is unattainable. Therefore, we are going to get as close to that as works for the client and the needs of the site. So, what you have to do is understand that there are other factors you must look at. Here is a great infographic from SearchEngineLand with a table of all the factors.
Look through these and you will find bits of knowledge that will assist you. Then, I would suggest that first you go about finding who is linking to your best competitors for the term and see how you can get some links from them. I would also track the traffic coming to the page and see if the CTR is reasonable, are people spending time on the page/site, etc. Every little bit of help will move you closer to your goals.
I hope this makes you feel a bit better about the good work you have already done.

Rankings Dropped to Nothing
We're kind of in crisis mode, as our ad revenue is about to take a huge hit. Hoping someone can help me figure out what to do next. Site: https://indoorgardening.com Here's what I did (below) that I think broke things somehow. I'm clearly not an SEO expert but thought I was making things better. And things did improve over the last week or so but then fell apart 2 days ago. 1. Most posts did not have a Yoast focus keyword. I added keyword phrases and used Yoast suggestions to optimize for that and for readability. 2. In some cases I changed post titles to better reflect the keyword phrase. 3. In some cases I changed the slug per Yoast's suggestion and did a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one. 4. I used Grammarly to fix all spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. 5. Some Yoast-suggested changes that were made: Image alt tags, subheading structures, adding keyword to subheadings, first paragraph, and meta description, changed sentence length for those over 20 words to clean up the text, added transition words where applicable, reworded passive voice sentences, added internal links when needed, eliminated consecutive sentences (first word), improved Flesch reading ease when necessary. 6. I also added or changed Amazon affiliate links where needed and swapped out images when necessary. Results:

I started this project about 3 weeks ago. On 11/29 we had one of our highest traffic days, with 1017 hits coming from Google. On 11/30, 257 hits came from Google, and on 12/1, 3 (three!!) hits came from Google. At this point, 82 of 89 posts have a double green "Good" score in Yoast; 6 are "OK" and 1 does not have a focus keyword designated. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. -John0 -
Youtube SEO Best Practices
Does anyone know where to find a list of SEO best practices for Youtube? Specifically...does anyone have thoughts on the SEO benefits of an @domain.com login vs @gmail.com login? Or is adding my url to the "Associated website" channel setting sufficient for SEO purposes?

Ranking going down and down and disappears.
I asked a question a few weeks ago about a main keyword that we are targeting that is fluctuating up and down. The keyword is "trash bags" and that is what my company sells. All different colors, thicknesses and sizes. This isn't just a random keyword we are trying to optimize for, this is our business. Before I started optimizing the website for "trash bags" we used the term "garbage bags", now that we started we have been off the charts and on the charts, but we have never regained rankings. The trend finally looked like it was going upwards... but now I see I dropped off of google again. Is this normal? Should I be worried that google is penalizing me for this keyword (There is many links that have trash bags in the anchor text - but we do sell that!)? Here is a screenshot of our ranking history for trash bags: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/no01

Newbie question. I have several keyword list I am trying to market - (My website is : http://www.soobumimphotography.com/) San Antonio wedding photographer, family photographer San Antonio sports photographer in san antonio headshot san antonio engagement photos san antonio I think it's too broad and thinking about getting separate sites for them. I know I can make urls something like this http://www.soobumimphotography.com/headshot using multisite function and planning to redirect it to www.sanantonioheadshots.com etc Is this good idea to do so? Should I get a new hosting and domain and start it all over again. Thank you

How much damage in search rank will my site suffer during an upcoming cms migration?
Hello, This is my first time on the seomoz forums and I hope I can get a real answer from this community of experts. I am migrating an existing site from an older cms (modx) to a newer cms (expression engine). The domain name isn't changing and neither will the keywords and keyphrases for existing pages. What is changing, however is the url suffix. This means I am going from www.domain.com/page-name.html to www.domain.com/page-name I can't seem to replicate the html sufffix in the new urls. Now this is the only reason why I will be setting up 301 permanent redirects from the old urls to the new ones. My question is: Will the domain suffer a loss in page rank or a substantial decline in search engine position as a result of this migration process? How fatal will it be? When can I expect my rankings to recover?

How do 301 redirects affect rankings?
Scenario: example.com/red-shoes gets 301 redirected to example.com/brown-boots because we have stopped selling red shoes and now only sell brown boots (which is a fairly new page with no authority). the red-shoes page ranked well for "red shoes" and "footwear". Will Google still index and show the red-shoes url in the SERPs? Will the "red shoes" and "footwear" keywords still rank well? Or does the redirected/new boots page need to properly support these keywords? The boots page has inherited the juice from the shoes page, but how does it help the boots page rank well? Only for keywords that both pages targeted, like a general "footwear" type keyword? Thanks in advance!

Advertising and negative impact on SEO
On one of my sites, I've been trying to get the word out by contacting blogs and asking them to share my site with their readers. This has resulted in some free publicity for my site, as well as quite a few paid reviews/sponsored posts. Note, however, that I've never paid for links, just reviews of my site... When I started this about 2 months ago, my site was a PR3 and getting fairly lowsy organic search traffic (i.e. 30-40 visits a day from Google). Then a few days ago, my PR dropped to 1. I didn't worry too much though, because my organic traffic was still around 30-40 visits a day. Now today, I checked and I only had 1 visitor the entire day from Google. Obviously I've been penalized. My most important question is, what can I do? Do I have an recourse, or do I need to just shut the domain down and move elsewhere? Second, wtf is Google penalizing this? I understand the argument against paid links, but should I not be allowed to advertise my site? Apparently I can buy links all day long through Google and they'll happily take my money, but the minute I pay some poor blogger to write an article about my site to their audience, I get penalized? Please help, I can't believe I just destroyed one of my sites like this!

Homepage display for seo
hi, Which is the best , seo speaking, about the homepage display with a CMS (joomla here). 1/ To display articles as "blog" and thus articles are always recent but not the same (chronological).. 2/ To display always a same article (just 1) but updated sometimes to times ? 3/ Both of them are good ? Tks a lot in advance..
