Ideas on why Pages Per Visit Dropped?
-
Week over week our pages per visit continue to drop. Any ideas on where to look to diagnose?
-
Thanks for your candor, EGOL. Was just looking for some insight on where I might look outside of the obvious markers I'd already evaluated.
These forums have been been extremely helpful in the past when folks have encountered similar issues before mine.
Have a great day!

We're a news media site,
This is some of the most volatile stuff on the web.
Really... if you have concerns and don't know what's going on it would be best to hire a pro to review the site instead of chasing shots in the dark from people who have never seen the site.
Your effort and theirs could be divining for a problem that does not exist.

Thanks, Tom. I'm quite puzzled because I don't see anything that would indicate why organic search pages per visit have dropped 7%.
404s and server errors are fairly stable. We did see a spike last Monday from spam that we have since fixed, so not sure if that would translate to organic.
Our organic traffic was growing in the teens week over week, and in the past few weeks, we are down by 2% or flat. I know this is kind of a micro look, but I try to stay on top of things as much as possible.
And now the pages per visit are down two weeks in a row. We're a news media site, so I'm trying to see if I can see a pattern, but can't seem to find one.
Thanks for your input.
If any other ideas pop into your head about pages per visit or ideas on stabilizing traffic, I'd be grateful.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Aggie
This really could be a number of things, but there's a few places to start looking.
First, I would jump into your webmaster tools and see if you have had a spike in errors, which you can find in the traffic tab. If the Googlebot is seeing 404 or server errors, your users might be getting the same thing. Look for any spikes in those graphs and see if there is anything that might put a user off.
Next, I would look at segmenting your analytics data. Are you looking at all of your traffic as a whole? It may be worthwhile to look at the data over time in segments, such as the non-paid search, referral, and paid search segments Google analytics provides. It may be that there is one particular traffic channel that is driving the "bad" traffic - such as PPC ads that aren't converting or referral traffic from a new partner. For instance, one of my clients places a banner on an affiliated website with its own tracking URL. We saw traffic increase over a number of weeks, but bounce rate, dwell time and pages per visit fell and it turned out that the users referred from the banner were, by in large, bouncing straight off. After running it for a bit longer, we decided to remove the banner as it wasn't driving relevant traffic. If you see anything unnatural in these segments, you might be able to identify the cause.
Similarly, have you started ranking for any "educational" terms lately? By that I mean, have you started ranking for terms like "what is [keyword]" or "[keyword] explained"? If so, you may be getting traffic for the terms, but because your landing pages have served their purpose, users are arriving, reading, and leaving. Not a lot you can do in this case to improve pages per visit, but you could be able to capture some lead data by adding an email signup to those landing pages.
You should also have a look at your user journeys in Google analytics, which you can find if you go to Audience -> Visitors Flow in the left hand side navigation. See if you can see a pattern here - are there particularly pages that users are going to that has seen a jump in exit rate over time? Look at those pages - has any HTML/javascript code gone wrong? Is anything broken on those pages? Are they, in fact, just low quality pages that you could improve? This might also reveal something.
Don't be too worried though if you can't see anything standing out. Sometimes these things happen and recover - other times user behaviour simply changes. These methods above might be able to point out any faults you need to address or any improvements you could make. But if your traffic and conversions are steady, pages per visit decreasing isn't such a bad thing. In fact, if conversions are steady (how ever you measure them), one could argue that users taking a shorter time (and journey) to convert show that they're trusting your brand and website more to make the decision earlier.
Hope this helps Aggie!

404 pages seem to be stable as do referring sites, and no navigation updates. I'm not sure about the GA tagging. I did not implement the tagging, so I wouldn't know where to look to find out.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Lisa

Did you update any navigation lately?
Are pages still properly tagged with analytics?
Have you seen a spike in 404 pages?
Are visitors coming from the same places, or are you getting unqualified traffic?

Consistent drop every time after ranking good for few days: Same experience?
Hi all, We been facing this ranking fluctuation issue for over an year. Every time we made some changes for better optimisation. We improve rank but eventually drop after few days. Most of the changes we employed are On-page like page loading, fixing broken links & redirects, page titles optimisation, etc. When can see the ranking improvement for our main keywords and related keywords for a while and we drop with in a week eventually. I wonder if someone face the same issue and any thoughts on this scenario? Thanks

Does the more number of ranking pages improve the website ranking?
Hi all, Let's say there is a website with 100 pages ad 95 pages are not ranking for any keywords; but the other 5 pages including homepage are ranking for some keywords. In this scenario, the 95% non-ranking pages does impact the other 5% pages rankings? Or every page holds their credibility in ranking irrespective of other pages in website? Thanks

Product Listing Pages
Hi I had a question regarding product pages and the best way to display the page for SEO. For example, is it best to have a page for - Blue Euro Containers including a table of the capacity options you can buy.. Or, have each product split out so it has it's own product page - 60L Blue Euro Container, etc etc I know a lot of the information will be fairly similar, with the capacity being the one major difference - is this a bad thing? Some of our product tables are too big and the idea was to split them out. Thanks!

US domain pages showing up in Google UK SERP
Hi, Our website which was predominantly for UK market was setup with a .com extension and only two years ago other domains were added - US (.us) , IE (.ie), EU (.eu) & AU (.com.au) Last year in July, we noticed that few .us domain urls were showing up in UK SERPs and we realized the sitemap for .us site was incorrectly referring to UK (.com) so we corrected that and the .us domain urls stopped appearing in the SERP. Not sure if this actually fixed the issue or was such coincidental. However in last couple of weeks more than 3 .us domain urls are showing for each brand search made on Google UK and sometimes it replaces the .com results all together. I have double checked the PA for US pages, they are far below the UK ones. Has anyone noticed similar behaviour &/or could anyone please help me troubleshoot this issue? Thanks in advance, R

Question About : Redirecting Old Pages to New & More Relevant Ones
I'm looking over a friends website, which used to have great natural ranking for some big keywords. Those ranking & CTR's have dropped a lot, so the next thing I checked into was top selling Brand & Category pages. Its seems like every year or so a New Page was constructed for each brand... Many of which have high quality and natural inbound links. However, the pages no longer have products and simply look outdated. I'm trying to figure out if they should place redirects on all the old pages to a new URL which is more seo friendly. Example Links : http://www.xyz.com/nike2004.html , http://www.xyz.com/nike-spring2006.html , http://www.xyz.com/2011-nike-shoes.html - (have quality inbound links, bad content) .... Basically would it be advantageous to place redirects on all of these example pages to a new one that will be more permanent... http://www.xyz.com/nike-shoes.html I'm also looking at about 15 brands and maybe 100+ old/outdated urls, so I wasn't sure if I should do this & to what extent. Considering many of the brand pages do rank, but not as well as they should... Any input would help, thanks

Sudden Page Rank Drop for Weight Loss Camp
My site BalanceME.com has been performing really well and continually climbs more and more but in the last 7 days we have had a drop this last week. We went from #2 for weight loss camp to #6, and even further on other terms. It is mid May and I cannot find any other explanation for the sudden drop. I am hoping someone could give me some sort if idea what could possibly be the answer. Recently we have had two press releases go out, target for keywords, and also installed images that navigate to new pages on the site. There have been few additions to the site, and nothing can explain the drop. Other companies in our group have not had issues with recent drops, and we use the same practices with the other organizations. Thank you for your time

Our Rankings are being very inconsistent! Some days we are on the front page, some days we are not in the top 50\. This happens on a weekly and sometimes daily basis... Any thoughts on why this is happening? This newbie appreciates any feedback.
We seem to be having major issues with our rankings. When I came into the company, the company was in the middle of cleaning up some of their past SEO efforts that had caused some issues with some of the latest Google updates. We were able to get the site back up to par, and some of our rankings were improved back to the first page, but then they disappeared. They will head back to the first page and then disappear again on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Does anyone have any idea on why it will be doing this so inconsistently and so often? This newbie appreciates any feedback!!!!!

Ranking well for main key terms but site traffic has dropped sharply?
Hello All, Just a quick question. Since the penguin update our site www.caravanguard.co.uk has seen some pretty fluctuating movement in Google, many of our key terms dropped over night, but over the last few weeks they have slowly started to move back up the rankings. The bizarre thing is despite the recover in rankings our unique traffic has taken a fairly large whack in numbers. Seasonality? Weather? ( it's been nice in the UK for a change) I can only assume the longer tail terms are taking more time to recover. I have tried to look into our back link profile and have noticed a little too much in terms concise keyword targeting, How do you go about changing these terms and removing the really bad links (struggling to identify the worst cases) on totally irrelevant sites or poor directories. Put in place before I started here 🐵 Any help truly appreciated. Regards Tim
