Fixing up poorly performing eCommerce SIte with content? First things first..
-
I had a small site that was performing well enough for me for 6 years--nice source of extra family income. It was a very out of date platform (1990's) and I moved it to Big Commerce in December. Since then visits and sales have just plummeted. It has died and I am sad.
I want to remain positive. It's a viable niche product line, I have tons of quality inventory, my site platform is current. I am a good writer and am willing to add content if it will help. From what I can determine apart from technical issues I may not know about I think I suffer from THIN CONTENT.
I want to pretend I'm opening a new business and start over in today's environment. I have had bad experiences with two SEO consultants (one ripped me off financially, the other gave me advice that hurt me) so I have no choice but to educate myself. I got started in ecommerce back in 1998 with the help of many wonderful kind people on forums so I'm turning to this resource once again.
What would you do first if you were me especially to get some revenue flowing asap? I need help. I need to know if there is hope or if I should liquidate at the nearest swap meet Thanks!

Thanks a million. Very to the point and useful.

Perhaps going back to eBay (shudder) or Etsy is the way to go again...
I used to be an eBay powerseller and walked away from that when I saw how much more efficient and inexpensive it was to sell on a website. I walked away from a successful store. I was tired of paypay, tired of bidders who did not pay and tired of the work that it took to do relistings, etc.
Are small e-commerce sites doomed? Does Google even want them?
No. If you are selling niche products and have a site with lots of useful information such as articles on how to select, how to use, how to maintain the products that you sell, sites like that are succeeding. I own a few of them. I have great rankings and beat ebay, amazon, manufacturers and just about everyone. To do that we have two people working all day every day on improvements and new content. That might be enough to hold positions in our niches.
Do they want retailers on Google shopping and out of the organic search results? Has that shipped sailed?
They want sites who earn their positions. If you have a great informative site that is one of the best in your niche I think that you have a great chance to succeed.
But, if you want to toss up a product site and expect it to rank without earning popularity then I would not be betting on you in the long term - or even in the short term.
That's why I came here. I need to know more about what I don't know.
Start reading questions that are similar to yours. See who answers, who gives good advice, who has a style that you like. That's how I have found every person who has ever worked on one of my websites.

"get you back in the money with your new platform - if that is possible."
Thank you. Excellent answer.
The POSSIBILITY of re-establishing myself is what I want to ascertain. The damage is done from the conversion because it was not done properly. The "expert" who was helping me did not warn me of the ramifications of the move.
I am not opposed to putting money out for help, if it's the right help. I don't want to spend $5000 only to be led down the primrose path. In my day job I get 5 calls a day from SEO sales people. I've been burned twice. That's why I came here. I need to know more about what I don't know.

I would like to get some feedback from credible people like yourself before I move forward so I thank you.

What would you do first if you were me especially to get some revenue flowing asap?
I don't know your level of expertise and if you understand how to move a site from one platform to another, performing all of the redirects and .htaccess writing that is needed. If those jobs are not done properly rankings will tank - sometimes temporarily, sometime for a very long time, maybe never recovering the original power that was lost. That could be your problem, maybe not.
You said ASAP. If that is what you want then you need an expert who can diagnose right away, perform corrections and get you back in the money with your new platform - if that is possible.
I am not saying that to solicit business because I don't work on other people's websites. I am saying that because lots of people ask for help in forums then fart around for weeks or months trying to recover a site by applying guesses offered by people who have not spent enough to diving deep into the site to determine exactly what is wrong.
So, if you want out fast, hire someone who knows what they are doing.
If you have lots of time, no budget, or the loss of income isn't that important then you can see what advice you get here. It might be an easy fix and it is at least worth a day or two while this question is visible to see what you get.

Moving from no follow to follow links on our eCommerce site
Hi everyone, I recently taken on an SEO eCommerce account and found that all the footer links have a no follow attribute. I've requested that the no follow tags be removed as the pages are quite valuable (about us, finance, recycling, help centre etc). I've been asked what the risks are and all I can think of is a slightly increased number of pages for Google to Crawl. Are there any other risks you can think of? Does anyone have experience around making this type of change? For benefits, I believe that it will make our content look more trustworthy to Google and help with traffic through to those pages in the SERPs. Any other pros you can think of will be a great help.

Dulpicate Content being reported
Hi I have a new client whose first MA crawl report is showing lots of duplicate content. The main batch of these are all the HP url with an 'attachment' part at the end such as: www.domain.com/?attachment_id=4176 As far as i can tell its some sort of slide show just showing a different image in the main frame of each page, with no other content. Each one does have a unique meta title & H1 though. Whats the best thing to do here ? Not a problem and leave as is Use the paremeter handling tool in GWT Canonicalise, referencing the HP or other solution ? Many Thanks Dan

How to fix Google index after fixing site infected with malware.
Hi All Upgraded a Joomla site for a customer a couple of months ago that was infected with malware (it wasn't flagged as infected by google). Site is fine now but still noticing search queries for "cheap adobe" etc with links to http://domain.com/index.php?vc=201&Cheap_Adobe_Acrobat_xi in web master tools (about 50 in total). These url's redirect back to home page and seem to be remaining in the index (I think Joomla is doing this automatically) Firstly, what sort of effect would these be having on on their rankings? Would they be seen by google as duplicate content for the homepage (moz doesn't report them as such as there are no internal links). Secondly what's my best plan of attack to fix them. Should I setup 404's for them and then submit them to google? Will resubmitting the site to the index fix things? Would appreciate any advice or suggestions on the ramifications of this and how I should fix it. Regards, Ian

Container Page/Content Page Duplicate Content
My client has a container page on their website, they are using SiteFinity, so it is called a "group page", in which individual pages appear and can be scrolled through. When link are followed, they first lead to the group page URL, in which the first content page is shown. However, when navigating through the content pages, the URL changes. When navigating BACK to the first content page, the URL is that for the content page, but it appears to indexers as a duplicate of the group page, that is, the URL that appeared when first linking to the group page. The client updates this on the regular, so I need to find a solution that will allow them to add more pages, the new one always becoming the top page, without requiring extra coding. For instance, I had considered integrating REL=NEXT and REL=PREV, but they aren't going to keep that up to date.

Have my site been penalised ?
Hi, I recently hired a link builder (who works for a digital marketing agency and wanted to earn some extra cash ) to do some link building for me on keyword Carpet Cleaner Hire Basically , May my ranking for this work has moved from 29 up to 13 , then down to 500 + and now up to 67 ?. It's been all over the place and I am worried that maybe google thinks its unnatural or to many links etc. I looked at some of the work this chap did and there was a log of bookmarks done , apparently to increase social awareness and some articles on random forums I never heard of but the articles didn't look to good and in my eyes were a little spammy.. I don't have any messages in WMT saying I have been penalised or anything but I am naturally worried that this chap may have caused damaged and that I was manually penalised. I have since asked him to stop immediately.. does this sound normal for the ranking to be all over the place in this manner when link building ? How can I tell if I have been manually penalized in any way ? What;s the general consensus ?. Should I contact google or leave it and see what happens ? Other keywords seems to be okay though. Any advice much appreciated. thanks Sarah.

Duplicate Content Issue
Hello, We have many pages in our crawler report that are showing duplicate content. However, the content is not duplicateon the pages. It is somewhat close, but different. I am not sure how to fix the problem so it leaves our report. Here is an example. It is showing these as duplicate content to each other. www.soccerstop.com/c-119-womens.aspx www.soccerstop.com/c-120-youth.aspx www.soccerstop.com/c-124-adult.aspx Any help you could provide would be most appreciated. I am going through our crawler report and resolving issues, and this seems to be big one for us with lots in the report, but not sure what to do about it. Thanks

The course of action to move my macro site to some mini sites- justin if you can help
We have a site that we want to break up into mini sites but keep the old site for the major brands. Empirecovers.com is the major and we want to break it off into Empire Truck Covers and Empire Boat covers. What I am thinking of doing is linking from the home to Empiretruckcovers.com instead of a mini page on the site and 301 redirect the mini page to empiretruckcovers.com. Than (there wont be duplicate content) making a small page for truck covers on empire just so people do not get confused. Is this the best way to go or what do you suggest? We are doing this because I feel there is seo value in having mini sites and also the user experience will be cleaner and people will trust it a lot more than inside a big site. The other problem is I have some great rankings on the pages so I want to do it so there is as little damage as possible. I guess once I start I will do all the free directories, yahoo directory and try to get links as fast as I can. Any suggestions would be great. I am going to do a/b testing to see if my adwords convert better on mini site or on the big site for certain keywords too
