Best Layout for Product Page SEO
-
Hi
I am looking to revamp my website and would like to know your views on the best product layout for SEO - in particular if it better to have tabulated content like play.com
or non tabulated content like Amazon.
Are there any pros or cons to each approach? I believe tabulated looks better and is easier to navigate but do the engines see this as hidden text? I have been told this is an issue with expandable divs.
Many thanks
David

@Stephen,
Seems like we have different experiences with using tabs. We used it on an ecommerce website and it improved the conversion rate. Now we're still testing other layouts but some usability tests showed us that the tabs are helping people find the information they are looking for very fast.
The templates you refer to at unbounce.com aren't product detail pages, they are lead generation or click through pages and they indeed do need a specific design to increase conversions. I do agree with what you say about testing, that's the only way to make descisions based on facts. Testing is continuous process, there are always things to be optimized.

Ofc, many experiments show that tabs are terrible for conversion. Only way you can know is to test
I suggest you have a look at eth templates on unbounce.com and have a look at 5secondtest as well.
Finish off with some google a/b and multivariate tests and you will never have to ask for opinions again; the numbers will tell you the facts

Thanks for clearing it up Joris & Gianluca.

Hi David,
I too prefer the play.com example. And no... Search Engines does not consider the content into tabs as hidden, because - if you think it - it is not hidden at all as the users can click on the tab and read the content.
If the users weren't able to access to content in the tabs, that would be hidden.
Amazon model, on the other side, is ugly to see, but somehow it is such a "visual trademark" that people do not care to scroll the page... but it is Amazon: I don't believe that a new site would have the same condiscendence.

In my opinion the layout itself doesn't impact the SEO that much, if you take the general on-page SEO rules into account (page title, url, H1, content, images, ...)
If these elements are optimized you should consider optimizing the page for a better conversion rate, and if you look at the two examples you just showed I might imagine that the layout Play uses converts better. We recently did some multivariate testing for a big e-commerce site and ended up with a similar page layout, without hurting SEO rankings. Conversion rate increased 12% to the previous layout.

Unsolved Should I combine pages?
Hi, Im not sure of the correct route to take here... We are a training provider and I manage the website. The main course offered is the transport manager CPC. Currently, I have a "catch all" landing page which links to each different course option: Landing page > Classroom Online Self study Distance learning The main keyword revolves around "transport manager cpc" I want searchers to land on the online page is they search "online transport manager CPC" for example but I think its confusing Google. I'm wondering if I should de-index the store pages (although some perform very well) and increase the content on the main landing page to rank for every related keyword on that page. Initially, I wanted to devalue the landing page in favor of the store pages but I'm unsure if that's the right way to go. I've stripped out the bulk of the keywords and content and shifted it to each individual page. but as above, Im now unsure if that's the right route to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍 Thanks

SEO NEWBIE!!!
I am trying to get my website (and business) to the top of the search engines..just like everybody else here. 🙂 I have no idea what I am doing and I have to do this myself, because I do not have the extra money to hire somebody to do it for me. So, my question is... Where can I go to figure out how to do this? I don't know some of the "lingo" used. Like it slow crawled my sites and it wants me to fix a few things and I don't know what it is talking about. HELP!!! Becky

Sold Products appear as duplicate pages 'Page Not Found' ???
Hi there, I'm down to just 6 duplicate page warnings but I'm not sure how to deal with this one: Information Page Not Found! http://www.vintageheirloom.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=6 My Ecommerce shopping site products are unique, 1 of a kind. So once one product has sold and been delivered we take the product off our website, hence the Information Page Not Found! As I understand when search engines re-index these warnings will drop off but new sold products would replace them. So redirecting seems like hard work and never ending. Is it ok to ignore these warnings? Thanks Mozzers..

How much does punctuation affect on-page SEO?
I have a page on a site that is targeted for "men's custom suits." Using the on-page analysis tool from SEOmoz it gives me an F for "mens custom suits" but an A with the apostrophe. Even though the apostrophe is proper English grammar, does it affect rankings either way?

Optimizing E-Commerce Category Pages For SEO
Hey, Does anyone have any tips for optimizing e-commerce category pages? Looking to add content to each category page but not sure where to put the content i.e. above the footer? Above the search results? In the left hand nav bar? Have a landing page which they click through to see search results? If anyone has any good examples or tips it would be much appreciated. cheers David

Page URL Hiearchy
So I have read on here that page URL Hiearchy is important. My question is from a search engine standpoint which of the following methods would be the best to use (or another if not listed) COMPACT and naturally hierarchical MountainBiking.com MountainBiking.com/adventures ( a list of the pages below ) MountainBiking.com/adventures/in whistler (for each page) MountainBiking.com/adventures/in utah OR VERBOSE but reptetive MountainBiking.com MountainBiking.com/Mountain Biking adventures ( intro + a list of the pages below ) MountainBiking.com/Mountain Biking Adventures/Mounting Biking adventures in whistler MountainBiking.com/Mountain Biking Adventures/Mountain Biking Adventures in Utah It seemed like the blog I read suggested the compact form, but it seems to me that the verbose (though admittedly a bit clunky) seems better so far as exact keyword match etc. Experience and or advice on this?

Page Rank
I had just made a 301 re-direct on one of our product pages which had a PR of 4, now that Google has indexed the new page, it's now got a PR of 0, i'm struggling to understand why this could be, i know that you may see a drop of 1, which has happened in the past, but this drop just does not make sense. Any ideas of why this could be? Kind Regards
