Japanese search engines - any tips?
-
Has anyone got any tips on targeting searchers in Japan from a UK site? This is for a (very) small and niche B2B site.
I've looked at the WBF on international SEO etc. so here, I'm hoping you'll be able to help with which engines & optimisation tips for those engines - I've read that Google Japan is big, but are there any others that people would recommend?
Thanks!

Thanks Marcus, we're not persuaded either way on the .jp site or /jp approach yet. Just looking at the options since the product being launched is targeted at Japan, but other products are not.
Yep, been through that WBF.
As I understand it, in rough terms, Bing seems to lean more heavily on keywrds on-page (esp. titles) than Google - I was really wondering if there are any similar 'preferences' that engines serving Japanese-language sites exhibit.
Perhaps I'm over-analysing this and should (as I think you've been hinting at) focus more on the basics and targeting of visitors than worrying about the subtleties

So, is the site also targeting other regions or is it a UK site targeted solely at japanese search?
What I am getting at is, if your site is working for UK but you want to bolt on some japanese traffic then maybe, a new japenese version of the site maybe the best approach. You could then set the region of the site in webmaster tools and target variations in wording and search.
I don't think there is any definitive right or wrong here but I remember taking a good deal from this old white board friday on this subject:

Let me know what you think.

Sorry, that was a bit cryptic - though not intentionally so!
Its micro-electronics (components etc.) and a handful of devices at that. The queries will likely involve the standards/protocols that the components support - not quite as specific as part-number/serial number queries.
Searchers will be looking for 'widget protocolX' type queries. Might be competing with some Japanese sites.

Hey Jassy, can you flesh it out a bit? What is the business area and will people in Japan be looking for a UK supplier? I.E. Will they be running queries like 'Green Widget Supplier UK' or are your competing with japanese language sites? I am no international SEO expert by a long shot but am happy to bounce some ideas around if it helps.

Google Search Console International Targeting - Works for Hungary, but not Ireland - Why?
company.com (root)
International SEO | | scottclark
USA - lang="en" | GSC target: USA (shows US site in SERPs for "companyname" search)
company.com/hungary
Hungary - lang="hu" | GSC target: Hungary (shows Hungarian site in SERPs for "companyname" search)
AWESOMENESS company.com/ireland
Ireland - lang="en" | GSC target: Ireland (shows US site (doh!) in SERPs "companyname" search)
NOT RIGHT! It is our theory [please weigh in!] that because we don't have a company.com/usa folder, the TLD targeting (EN) is overriding other English language sites in some manner. In other words, the reason it's not overriding Hungary is because it's a different language. What must we do to get the Irish site ranked for "companyname" searches and to show by default in Ireland?0 -
Search visibility increase with international SEO
Hi Moz Community, I am wondering if there is any tool and/or any sort of standard increase in search visibility I can assume that we will have with our website if we expand to start targeting Spanish with our site. At the moment we receive about 6000-7000 visits a day with 75% of that coming from the US and UK. I am wondering is there any way to make a rough assumption on visibility that will increase by launching a new Spanish speaking website. It would be a subdirectory, not a subdomain or gTLD. I am struggling to find a concrete answer on this and i'd like to make a semi-accurate forecast of the traffic we can expect based on the increase in search visibility that our Spanish language site will provide us. Thanks

Help targeting the USA in Search
I believe I've properly targeted, and told Google that our website absoluteautomation.com is aimed at US residents, while the .ca domain targets Canadian. However our .com domain routinely appears above our .ca when searching in Canada (actually on a physical computer in Canada) on google.ca. I'm hoping I can fix this both to improve Canadian search results, and I'm assuming that whatever is making .com appear so well in Canada is hurting it on the US side. Any ideas?

Webmaster tools - a drop in Views and Searches
Hi everybody I'm experience a very odd thing in Webmaster Tools (and Google Analytics). 4. March I can se a drop of views from about 2000 views a day to 250 views a day and the days thereafter they views are close to zero. Also some of the search term looks weird after this and is terms like w www.youtube.com, youtube musicas and youtube i put a spell on you, placing them in SERP in top 10 and refering to our /Youtube site (which is a blank site with no content). 5. March we got some new content on our site regarding danish flyers, and even though Webmaster Tools shows that our views are close to zero, Google Analytics shows an increase of trafic to our site from search terms from about 150 visits 4. March to about 600 visits 16. March. So what Webmaster Tools shows about views do not make any sense to me and especially not why we would rank on the term Youtube. I have also searched on some of these Youtube search terms and I can't see us ranking in SERP on these terms in top 10, but in Google Analytics I can see that we have got visits on these Youtube search terms. The domain we are using is an old domain that hosted an e-mail and chat site and I am a bit worried about the external links to our site. But the external links that Webmaster Tools and Open Site Explorer shows I don't see as bad links and the site has not had anything to do with Youtube clips. Our site is a https site - I don't know if that could have anything to do with it? So I'm really puzled about why Webmaster tools says our Views have dropped to zero, why Google Analytics says there is an increase of trafic from search to our site and what Youtube search terms have to do with our site?

Impact of Japanese .jp site duplicate content?
Our main website is at http://www.traxnyc.com and we just launched a Japanese version of the site at http://www.traxnyc.jp domain. However all the images used on the .jp site are linked from the .com site. Would this hurt me in Google at all for hotlinking images? Also there is quite a bit of duplicate content on the .jp site at the moment: only a few things have been translated to Japanese and for the most part the layouts and words are exactly the same (in English). Would this hurt my Google rankings in the US at all? Thanks for all your help.

Local search listings for Global Company
hi, I work for a company that has offices in several countries world wide. At the moment we only have one website. As we are an online business ranking in local search is not a huge issue. However, I'd like to know more about the probability of each office being listed globally in local without having a site representing each office.
