Internal Linking
-
Hi Everyone,
Should i be careful of how many internal links I have on one page? For example if i have a page that contains 700 words, can i have 5, 10, 15 internal links linking to other pages on my website? Is there a ratio for best practice.
I know that internal linking is important for spiders to crawl your website but at the same time dont make it look spammy.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, just noticed this also. I'm sure the guys who work on Wiki & the likes of the BBC, The Guardian are not just using this method for the sake of it, very interesting indeed. Although noticed NYTimes user underlines
-
I am not aware of any case studies, but I would share I do not use underlines on links in content. I like the method used here at SEOmoz. Notice in Alan's reply when he shared a link it appears in blue. That is the style I prefer.
-
I agree, many sites do not underline, I personly have not seen any evidecne to cause concern.
-
I see SEO like playing golf after a lesson, you dont want to go all stiff and un-natural, you need to swing natrualy with what you have learnt in the back of your mind.
-
On another note, i notice that Wiki, BBC and other do not user underlines by default in there internal links, but use just a different colour of text, only when the user hovers over the text it underlines. Do you know of any case studies done on this? what have you guys used in the past? experiences etc
My personal feeling is lets say naturally there are quite a few links, underlines i think make it quite difficult to read.
Kind Regards

bing actualy encourges internal linking
Provide a site structure with strong functionality, which helps encourage
link building. Linking to both trusted outside sources and internal content
shows a search engine you care about users getting the best data around their
query. In addition, HTML sitemaps ensure a good user experience and help search
engines discover all your pages and content.

Hi Ryan,
Yes, all these are natural, all for the benefit is for the user, not try to think to much on the SEO side of things, well maybe a little
Thanks for your quick response.

Hello;
If the links are relevant, and have structure, and reasons for being there, and linking to relevant information, I dont think it would hurt your ranking, so yes, I would be very careful, and yea, for the most part, with out seeing your site, the way it sounds, like a "Link farm" and search engines are over looking any link farms.. Hope this helps.
That is just my opinion.

Use whatever amount of internal links comes naturally. The purpose of internal links are to allow users who desire more information the ability to quickly find it.
If I write a statement "Vitamin A, Iron and Zinc are all essential nutrients....." then the three terms "Vitamin A", "Iron" and "Zinc" can all be anchor text links to internal pages which discuss these topics in greater detail. There is no rule of thumb such as "don't use more then 5 internal links per 100 words". The number would depend upon what content your site has available.
Take a look at Wikipedia which extensively uses internal links and ranks very well.
With respect to spam, I have never found natural internal links to look spammy. It's when you stretch to using text such as "the best vitamin in the world" as anchor text repeatedly that things can appear unnatural. You can certainly use that type of linking a few times in an article but I would suggest not overdoing it.

Should an international school have subdomains for each school in a different country?
I understand a lot of people in the SEO world think that everything should be under one site, but if a European school wants to expand its presence in the USA, the current domain authority is 30/100 for the European website. The school is thinking of opening another school in the USA, should they just create a subdomain on the same European site or have a new site for the USA because it's better for the branding?

Sitelinks to internal pages
Hi Moz Community, Is it only possible to get sitelinks to your main domain in the SERPs or can you also get them to internal pages in the SERPs? i.e. if this were to pop up in the SERP: www.mysite.com/page1
On-Page Optimization | | Brian_Dowd
Can I get sitelinks such as the examples below:
Sitelink1: www.mysite.com/page1/page1a
Sitelink2: www.mysite.com/page1/page1b
Sitelink3: www.mysite.com/page1/page1c
etc. Just curious and I haven't really find anything like that on the internet. How can I set them up? Thanks.0 -
Disavowed links, updated website etc - still no ranking improvements
Hi, Could anyone take a look at www.artificialgrass4u.co.uk - a few years ago it used to rank highly for 'artificial grass' ... then when Google rolled out its algorithms punishing websites with poor links it lost all it's rankings. We've disavowed almost all of the bad links, and have been adding new optimised content etc over the past few months but rankings still haven't improved. Is there anything I'm missing? Thanks

Cannibalizing link
this is what the reports states :Cannibalizing link"Red & Color Roses", "Red roses", "Black Baccara Roses\rBlack And Red Roses\rStarting at: $ 0.72 per Rose", "Black Magic Rose\rDark Red Black Rose\rStarting at: $ 0.96 per Rose", "Forever Young Roses\rRed Rose Flowers\rVelvety Deep Red\rStarting at: $ 1.16 per Rose", "Freedom Roses\rRed Rose\rStarting at: $ 0.66 ¢ per Rose", "Madame Delbard\rRed Wedding Rose\rStarting at: $ 0.66 per Rose", "Night Fever Roses\rTraditional Roses\rRomantic Red Roses\rStarting at: $ 0.66 per Rose", and "Red Paris Roses\rDark Red Rose\rStarting at: $ 0.72 per Rose"ExplanationIt's a best practice in SEO to target each keyword with a single page on your site (sometimes two if you've already achieved high rankings and are seeking a second, indented listing). To prevent engines from potentially seeing a signal that this page is not the intended ranking target and creating additional competition for your page, we suggest staying away from linking internally to another page with the target keyword(s) as the exact anchor text. Note that using modified versions is sometimes fine (for example, if this page targeted the word 'elephants', using 'baby elephants' in anchor text would be just fine).RecommendationUnless there is intent to rank multiple pages for the target keyword, it may be wise to modify the anchor text of this link so it is not an exact match. the questions is then why having those links on that page hurts, when we need the links to take the costumer to the color of red roses they want.

Too many on page links on ecommerce site
I have an online store with 10 catagories, many of those have subcategories. I have a tree style navigation menu on the page. This helps people quickly find what they need. However, I end up with about 125 links on the page that way. Does google really penalize me for this? Is there anyway around this? Advice much appreciated!
