Hi Everybody fairy new here
-
I thought my site is fine until I joined SEOmoz and had my site crawled, took couple of hours to crawl the site I received a e-mail "This is a friendly notification that we successfully completed a Starter Crawl of your campaign. No need to stress, we made an easy-to-understand report so you can fix any errors we found." HMMMM I was surprised at the number of errors that my page has. I went over the crawl diagnostics and found out that I have a large number of duplicate page content. That can't be since I place the content on the site myself. All the pages from the back-end are single. I would appreciate if someone from this wonderful forum educated me on this topic and if possible provided me with a straight forward solution to this problem. Looking forward to hearing some comments.

Hi Tolod
I see your most concerning error being that your IP address does not seem to be resolving to your domain name, looks like your DNS settings are not configured properly.
I.E. http://208.43.169.47/watches-and-accessories is showing in the browser address bar instead of http://www.watchrepairny.com/watches-and-accessories
If you're not sure how to correct this, your hosting provider should be able to help.
Regarding duplicate content errors, have a check which pages are being reported as duplicate and compare them against each other to come up with your own conclusions. To be classed as duplicate, they would need to have substantially similar content rather than exactly the same content. Could be that your titles, descriptions and headers are very similar.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Have you read Dr. Pete's SEOmoz blog post about duplicate content to see if any of that might apply to you? Even if your back-end is showing one page, it could still be generating multiple pages.

Ehat Cms are you using? I had some hard time with joomla as engines somehow always found unpublished items and deleted urls. That can cause trouble. In wp if you have identical tags only relevant to one post that is again a great source of duplicates content. If your urls are available with and without www (that is not cms specific) again: duplicate content. If your urls are availabe with and without a slash in the end that is once again a duplicte. Look at the crawl diagnostic to see what are your duplicates and how could your CMS generate them?

Have you place a rel="canonical" tag?

Huge uptick in 404s on new website
I just launched a new website, and I see that the 404s shot up hugely in Google Webmaster Tools right during the launch. We went from Drupal to WordPress, but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether these 404s represent a crisis, or potentially something harmless? There has been no noticeable SEO downtick in terms of keywords or queries during the same period... Thanks for any thoughts. Screenshot-2015-05-19-13.58.55.png

Why does my 301 show the old urls with new descriptions and titles?
Hi all, We've just rebranded. The 301 appears to have worked well and moved the results and rankings onto the new domain. However a site:olddomain.com search in Google brings up about a hundred pages that have the new titles and descriptions but show the old urls - does anyone have any idea how to make the old domain disappear from the SERPS? Many thanks, Richard

New Page Showing Up On My Reports w/o Page Title, Words, etc - However, I didn't create it
I have a WordPress site and I was doing a crawl for errors and it is now showing up as of today that this page : https://thinkbiglearnsmart.com/event-registration/?event_id=551&name_of_event=HTML5 CSS3 is new and has no page title, words, etc. I am not even sure where this page or URL came from. I was messing with the robots.txt file to allow some /category/ posts that were being hidden, but I didn't re-allow anything with the above appendages. I just want to make sure that I didn't screw something up that is now going to impact my rankings - this was just a really odd message to come up as I didn't create this page recently - and that shouldnt even be a page accessible to the public. When I edit the page - it is using an Event Espresso (WordPress plugin) shortcode - and I don't want to noindex this page as it is all of my events. Sorry this post is confusing, any help or insight would be appreciated! I am also interested in hiring someone for some hourly consulting work on SEO type issues if anyone has any references. Thank you!

301 or 410 a Pop Up Window with a New URL
I asked our development team to 301 Pop Up window URLs back to their complimentary product page as we've changed URLs for all of our Pop Ups. We have 100,000s of products on our site, so the number of rewrites are becoming unmanageable and slows server response times (their words). They want to kill these 301's after a prescribed amount of time. Should they just become 410s, leave them as 404s (current state), or insist that we keep them as 301's?

Merging two sites into a new one: best way?
Hi, I have one small blog on a specific niche and let's call it firstsite.com (.com extension) and it's hosted on my server. I am going to takeover a second blog on same niche but with lots more links, posts, authority and traffic. But it his on a .info domain and let's call it secondsite.info and for now it's on a different server. I have a third domain .com where I would like join both blogs. Domain is better and reflects niche better and let's call it thirdsite.com How should I proceed to have the best result? I was thinking of creating a new account at my server with domain thirdsite.com After that upload all content from secondsite.info and go to google webmaster to let they know that site now sits on a new domain. Also do a full 301 redirect. Should it be page by page or just one 301 redirect? And finally insert posts (they are not many) from firstsite.com on thirdsite.com and do specific redirects. Is this a good option? Or should I first move secondsite.info to my server and keep updating it and only a few weeks later make transition to thirdsite.com? I am worried that it could be too much changes at once.

Guidance for setting up new 301s after having just done so (
Hi I've recently set up a load of 301 redirects for a clients new site design/structure relaunch One of the things we have done is take the kw out of the sub-category landing page url's since they now feature in the top level category page urls and don't want to risk over-optimisation by having kw repeats across the full urls. So the urls have changed and the original pages 301'd to the new current pages. However If rankings start to drop & i decide to change urls again to include kw in final part of url too for the sub category landing pages, whats best way to manage the new redirects ? Do i redirect the current urls (which have only been live for a week and have the original/old urls 301'd to them) to the new url's ? (worried this would create a chain of 301's which ive heard is not ideal) Or just redirect the original urls to the new ones, and can forget about the current pages/url's since only been live for a week ?

(I presume best not since GWT sitemaps area says most new urls indexed now so I presume sees those as the original pages replacement now) Or should they all be 301'd (original urls and current urls to the new) ? Or best to just run with current set up and avoid making too many changes again, and setting up even more 301's after having just done so ? Many Thanks 🙂 Dan0 -
Help! Need advice for a new HTTPS URL!
Hi. We have just launched a new website that is fully secure with the HTTPS url. You can still access the home page with an ordinary HTTP address. That is what we want to change. Should we forward the HTTP url to the HTTPS? Redirect? It is the same URL for both. http://www.parrotmoon.com Thank you for all ideas! Jay

Best place for new relevant content ?
Hi everyone, The background to my question is that one of the companies I work for has just produced a load of videos answering many of the common questions about their products, for the ecommerce part of their site. I've got these videos transcribed which I want to use as the backbone to some of the main pages on the site (some of which are already ranking reasonably well). I was thinking of putting this content on their department page (so for example their departments would be kitesurfing, land kites, toy kites etc.) above links to their sections (e.g. kite surf kites, kite surf boards etc.). Do you think this would be a good place to put a large amount of text ? (the text will be in a scrollable div) - i.e. could it get in the way of the links which are currently passing juice deeper in to the site ? Alternatives are to put the videos under the links to the sections (which would place them below the fold), or to place each video on its own page and simply link to these pages from the departments page (although it is the department page we wish to rank). Another alternative is to put links to the sections both before and after the new content. Hope that all makes sense! Thanks in advance
