How to tell if you have been penalised?
-
Hey Guys,
Something is seriously going on with the SEO on my website and it's become business critical.
We were ranked first on Google for phrases like 'Advertising agency Cambridge' and all of a sudden we have been dropped, not even ranking.
To me this screams a penalisation but I can't understand why. I have never paid for links or done anything out of the ordinary that would get such a negative impact.
Is there a way to check if a site has actually been penalised and find the reason?
What would be the best course of action to appeal?
Has anyone experienced something like this and have a timeframe for resolution?
Thanks,
Gareth

I see your homepage is back in the index in Google when I do a site: search, and in google.com it's showing up on the first page for a search of Advertising agency Cambridge from California.
Did you figure out what happened and why you got back in? Or just celebrating that the page is including again? Glad to see it's back in there!

Hi,
Yep its all verified, sitemap was all in place, no crawling errors, 301 redirects in place.
Talk about pulling your hair out, how can Google just drop the homepage without any prior warning or error.
Ugh
-
Have you verified your site in Google Webmaster Tools? Google will send you a warning there sometimes if they see something really bad.

Very strange.. I find it incredibly bizzare as I haven't done any major SEO work and as you say, it just happened that over the weekend the homepage went.
Perhaps a Google bug or a major reshuffle? I am just struggling to come up with an answer.

this is weird. Same thing happened to us (homepage gone, rest ok) over the weekend and I've just seen another thread to the same effect.
Interesting to see how this pans out. Hopefully a temporary rumble

Hey,
I see you have a Wordpress Site so your "Home Page" could be called anything. What are you expecting to see as your home page?
Just the domain name I guess.
Of course the actual page you are looking for may be indexed in another name. Maybe take a look at how is your home page created.
Not that helpful. sorry...

i have sen this before, it has always come back.

Checking site index, everypage is present except for the homepage.
I have never done anything black hat so I am incredibly confused as to why it's been dropped from the index and what I can do to get it reindexed.
Cheers

What is the URL of the Home page? Are you certain it's been removed from the index?
try searching in Google for SITE:http://www.YOURHOMEPAGE.com/INDEX-NAME.HTML

After further investigation, it appears to just be the homepage that has been removed.
All other pages are still visible in search results, can anyone help shed some light on this situation with their experience?

Have we been penalised?
I have run a site called getinspired365.com for the last few years. All it does is dish out a new inspiring video everyday. Recently we decided to implement an SEO strategy around the creation of quote pages. We have created 200,000 different quote pages (e.g. http://www.getinspired365.com/brave-men-rejoice-in-adversity-just-as-brave-soldiers-triumph-in-war). As well as this, we've created 15,000 author pages (e.g.http://www.getinspired365.com/george-washington-quotes). We initially did a small batch to see if we could rank for different terms such as the start of a particular quote or "person's name quotes" and fortunately we ranked pretty well - on the first page for a lot of quotes, and authors. What we then did was release all of these new pages over the next week or two - so 215,000 pages. They've all indexed fine and we've received no errors on Webmaster Tools. We've not done any blackhat stuff and our domain is pretty solid having been featured by Techcrunch, BBC and others. On MOZ our individual pages are getting an "A" grade for SEO. We did this activity around 10 weeks ago. However, almost all of these pages are not ranking anywhere in Google. We accept that they may not rank on page 1 but they're not even ranking in the top 20 pages despite our small batch ranking really well. Some brand new pages, weirdly, are ranking (e.g.http://www.getinspired365.com/andrea-bocelli-quotes ranks on page 2 and http://www.getinspired365.com/walter-sisulu-quotes ranks page 1). We've seen no real rise in search impressions within Webmaster tools - so it is as though there's a penalty on our site, but not on all of our site - and not on just the new pages. I just wondered if anyone had any idea what could be causing the issue? Is it simply that we have released too much content too quickly? And if so, would you recommend de-indexing everything and almost starting again by just doing very small batches over a long period of time. Really appreciate any advice you may be able to offer. thanks,

Google Change of Address for previously penalised website?
Hey guys Would you use the 'change of address' tool (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106?hl=en) for a site that was previously penalised, pointing it to the new URL? Cheers Jeremy

How can I tell where I was penalised?
It seems for sometime now I have not been showing up the top for my keywords when I use to be ranking #1 and #2 for my main keywords, however now, I don't show up anywhere - this has been for almost a year now, can anyone tell me how I can find out (apart from google web masters tools) where I was penalised? Thanks

What happens if one remove the disavow file from a non penalised site
What happens if one remove the disavow file from a site that has not received a manual penalty from Google. Although the site did suffer from a drop in traffic and rankings.

Forum being heavily penalised
Hi everyone, I've just signed up for Moz and I'm getting well and truly stuck in. I have just completed my first site crawl and have a frightening 5,363 errors and 25,319 warnings. The main culprit is the forum on my site, it contains hundreds of pages dating from as far back as 2002. It is full of Duplicate Content, Duplicate page titles and a fair few 404 errors where old links are now outdated. Can anyone advise what would be the best course of action? Should I hide the whole forum from Google's robots? My only concern with doing this is the loss of hundreds of pages of regularly updated content which I feel is boosting SEO. Help! Thanks guys 🙂

My website hasn't been cached for over a month. Can anyone tell me why?
I have been working on an eCommerce site www.fuchia.co.uk. I have asked an earlier question about how to get it working and ranking and I took on board what people said (such as optimising product pages etc...) and I think i'm getting there. The problem I have now is that Google hasn't indexed my site in over a month and the homepage cache is 404'ing when I check it on Google. At the moment there is a problem with the site being live for both WWW and non-WWW versions, i have told google in Webmaster what preferred domain to use and will also be getting developers to do 301 to the preferred domain. Would this be the problem stopping Google properly indexing me? also I'm only having around 30 pages of 137 indexed from the last crawl. Can anyone tell me or suggest why my site hasn't been indexed in such a long time? Thanks

Suggestions for a cost effective, SEO safe domain that was previously penalised
Hi, I will try to explain my situation as clearly as I can, and any positive advise would be greatly appreciated. Obviously please let me know if you have any questions but I'm sorry the domains are private. I started by business 4 years ago and launched a website (site A) and worked hard to promote it in the best way I knew how. It brought in a good income for around 3 years but then was hit with some sort of google penalty/filter! Knowing then what I know now would probably of avoided the problem altogether but that's another story... So I brought another domain (site B) and started again with a new design and completely re-branded the company, and again have been working hard to promote it. It has been preforming well and there has been steady progress 😉 However since then I have been steadily promoting the penalised site (site A) and keeping an eye on it to see if the penalty/filter may be lifted. It had initially lost around 75% of traffic, but recently has been doing much better in SERPS and is again on the increase. My problem is that with my company now being completely re branded I want to keep consistency but (site A) looks old and dated compared the new one (site B) and I don’t want to be confusing users etc... So I need a cost efficient and “safe” solution to this in terms of SEO and budget. 301 Redirect to site B I thought of a 301 redirect “BUT” I'm concerned about the penalty/filter being passed onto the new site (site B) and have read this dose happen ? Complete Redesign/brand for site A This would probably be the best option except I'm limited on funds. I would need “another” full commerce site as its just way to much money at the moment. Remove site A completely Funds are tight and I'm still feeling the affects of the penalty so really can't afford to loose any traffic at all! Use site A as a micro-site I thought a micro site with just the main product landing pages being used. I would use the same design as site B, then re-write the text and then link everything to the new site. “BUT” I'm concerned about getting another penalty (duplicate) as all the anchor text links going to site B site would be identical! EG. To use the same design as site B I would need to use the same layout etc including navbars, anchor text links in the footer etc.. and I'm worried this may trigger a duplicate content penalty ? I hope there are some suggestion for my situation and thanks in advance for your help. Thanks Chris.
