Meta Keywords Dilution?
-
In general, does having a large number of meta keywords listed in a page's meta keywords line dilute effort?
On other words, should I focus on optimizing for 1 or 2 keywords per page to keep my efforts focused and increase the probability of ranking better for those 1 or 2.....or should I put down all the keywords I would "like" to rank for?
Thank You

Good article, Doug. Thanks!

Here's an article from SearchEngineLand about how Bing still uses the Keywords meta tag:
The Meta Keywords Tag Lives At Bing & Why Only Spammers Should Use It
Looks as if Bing use the keywords meta-tag as possible negative signal to identify spam. If you're going to use it, then be careful about over stuffing...

Hi Niall
Google no longer use the Keywords Meta Tag in their ranking algorithm, **officially announced back in September 2009 **so from an SEO perspective in relation to Google rankings, not worth spending the time on.
There is an interesting YouMoz blog post here on SEOmoz by DinkyDory from a year ago entitled "Why I Still Use Meta Keywords" which details a few reasons other than Search Rankings as to why they can still have a part to play.
My take on Meta Keywords though is that if everything else was done & there was nothing left to do, then perhaps just for the fun of it and because some directories still use them, though that really is clutching at straws. As there will always be endless tasks to do, I for one along with many others will continue to give them a miss.
I hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Your best bet is to forget that meta keywords ever existed. Honestly: It does nothing of worth and just distracts from real issues.

I am referring to the Meta keywords tag. Thank you.

Are you referring to the Meta tag or keywords on your page. If you meant the META tag then I wouldn't bother putting the effort into building the list. I like SEOMoz.org's opinion on META keywords that they are only good for giving your competition an idea of what keywords your focusing on.
If you meant keywords in the content of your page. I would suggest picking those that fit best and focus on making it human readable. I would be discouraged by a site that seemed to stuff keywords in the content.

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

Google Adword Keyword Planner
Previously I always utilsed the Google Adword Keyword Tool to provide traffic estimations in order to assist with my keyword research. I have recently revised these levels of traffic using the new Keyword Planner. Local Traffic results are approximately have fallen approximately 85%, I have anaylsed this over approximately 50 results. I am aware that the new Keyword Planner does not have a local traffic column anymore so I have utilised the location filter. I have the same problem in all my campaigns, in two different countries, please can someone advise why this is and how I can collect accurate keyword data. Kind regards

Keyword tracking- Local
Silly question about Local ranking monitors. If I have a local client in Pheonix, AZ and I want to track rankings for keywords. Is it best to monitor city+keyword or just keyword? I have ran tests with multiple clients and locations, and cannot ascertain the difference- as far as rankings go. I appreciate all input.

Top Ranking sites for specific keywords
Is there a way to put in a list of targeted keywords and see what the top 5 sites on Google are? There are several competitor tools in SEOmoz but I can't find anything that would allow you to do that. I have a list of 40 or so keywords that I would like to check what sites are in the top 3 positions on Google for each of the keywords. Thanks in advance

How do you do Keyword Research for a company that creates a lot of content
I work for a media company that owns 4 magazines. Our company is constantly producing new content. How do you do Keyword Research when the subject of your content is constantly changing? Do you need to do Keyword Research or do you simply optimize every article that you write for the web? Any ideas?
