Best geotargeting strategy: Subdomains or subfolders or country specific domain
-
How have the relatively recent changes in how G perceives subdomains changed the best route to onsite geotargeting i.e. not building out new country specific sites on country specific and hosted domains and instead developing sub-domains or sub-folders and geo-targeting those via webmaster tools ?
In other words, given the recent change in G perception, are sub-domains now a better option than a sub-folder or is there not much in it ?
Also if client has a .co.uk and they want to geo-target say France, is the sub-domain/sub-folder route still an option or is the .co.uk still too UK specific, and these options would only work using a .com ?
In other words can sites on country specific domains (.co.uk , .fr, .de etc etc) use sub-folders or domains to geo-target other countries or do they have no option other than to develop new country specific (domains/hosting/language) websites ?
Any thoughts regarding current best practice in this regard much appreciated. I have seen last Febs WBF which covers geotargeting in depth but the way google perceives subdomains has changed since then
Many Thanks

That isn't a domain at all - it's a sub-domain - what you've purchased there is yourdomain.uk.com - so your site is actually on a sub-domain of the domain uk.com
I'm guessing that in theory you could geo-target via Webmaster Tools, however I think that in reality you might struggle to get the site to rank. It would also make for some pretty mixed up looking URLs - yourdomain.uk.com/fr/ - the UK in there might mean lower click through rates as the site looks primarily UK focused.
I hope this helps,
Hannah

Sorry 1 more question re my client with the .co.uk who wants to Geo-target content to france.
They do have the .com version of their domain too. If the site was new I would recommend changing this round so they can geotarget france via the sub-directory on the .com and would still like to but since the site is well established I fear changing from the .co.uk to the .com will lose alot of its existing history/authority/rankings etc etc.
Is this a valid concern or should swapping the site over to sit on the .com, rather than the existing .co.uk, and then 301'ing the .co.uk pages to the .com deal with this ?
Many Thanks

Hi Dan,
uk.com is the domain - but your site is effectively sitting on a subdomain - i.e. yourdomain.uk.com
As such I'd expect that technically speaking you could geo-target something like yourdomain.uk.com/fr/ via webmaster tools, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Partially because I don't think it will actually work - overall you're giving off a really mixed signal, but also from a user experience perspective - I don't think French users will want to transact with a uk.com site - it just looks like a site for people in the UK.
Thanks

Thank you all for your helpful comments !!
So to summarise - all fine to go sub-directory route for generic domains like .com, .net etc but if you have country specific domain such as .co.uk then forget it and start afresh with a domain/language/hosting for your target country.
Just to throw a cat amongst the pigeons - if you have a .uk.com domain is that considered as a genuine uk focused tld or a .com ? So for .uk.com domains can you geo-target using sub-directories since ultimately considered as .com, or not ?
All Best

I would go for subdirectory approach if the site has a generic TLD like .com. Link building becomes much easier. However if you have country TLD like .co.uk then I would not go for a subdirectory approach. www.xyz.co.uk/de may be perceived a UK site for a German user from a site conversion point of view.

Some time ago I struggled with the same problem, and after reading articles on the seomoz blog and questions posted here I went for subdirectories.
subdirectories still give you the ability to add those folders to Google Webmaster Tools and set regio for that folder. You can go with country specific domains as well, but you will have to build links for every domain, whereas you only have to do it once when you choose subfolders.

SSL for subdomain is good or bad?
Hello, We have SSL certificate for our domain only for *.website.com, And now, we have few subdomains, as you know, we have two choices: 1. Using HTTPS for subdomain https://me.website.com, while it has problem with https://www.me.website.com (SSL error) 2. Using HTTP for subdomain, which has www and non-www with redirects. Which one is good for us?

Content on subdomain...
We recently moved our Wordpress site to a new host (WPEngine). We had forums on the old web host, which we need to migrate to a new forum platform (Xenforo) and integrate into the WP site. Since WPEngine only allows Wordpress on their servers, we need to install the forums at another web host, on one of our other domains. We might point to the forums through a subdomain, like this: forums.our-primary-domain.com The main reason we're re-installing the forums is for SEO value. HOWEVER, since our forum content will be on another domain, will we have an issue? If so, is there a workaround that would give us 'credit' for that content? Thanks much.

Domains and Hosting Question
I bought hosting for unlimited domains on Godaddy. It's not a dedicated server. It was just $85 a year. I have unlimited latency but a limited amount of "space." I don't know a lot about hosting servers etc... My question is relatively simple. When I go in GoDaddy to my hosting. There is a site that shows up as hosted, and all of the other sites show up under that site in it's directory. If you type the name of the site I bought the hosted package on, then type a forward slash and the name of one of the other sites on the hosting package, you will actually go to the other website. What is this relationship? Is it normal? Does that make all of my websites subdomains of the main site (that I bought the hosting package on)? I don't fully comprehend how this effects everything...

Best strategy for category filtering links eg by colour
Hi All, I hope you can help with some basic on page seo questions! I have an ecommerce site which allows users to filter/restrict the view of a category by one or more colours. This is done by appending a querystring value to the url ie to view blue, green and purple widgets the link might be: www.example.com/my-widgets-category/?colors=123,92,64 On each category page is a group of coloured boxes with links to filter by that colour, (only if there are available coloured widgets in that category). Each category has rel=canonical set to be the appropriate unfiltered category url ie: www.example.com/my-widgets-category/ I used to have these colour filter links all nofollowed- but am not sure that this is a good idea. So my questions are: 1/ what are the implications of these colour links that can generate a lot of different urls (as you can keep on adding colours to the filter) and how can i enure that i am not shooting myself in the foot- my customers love it! 2/ I also have page=1 etc appended for paging through results- the canonical url is set in all instnaces to be the plain category page as above- do i need to add the rel=prev and re=next? 3/ all of these links can really bump up my total page link count- at the moment i have colour filtering boxes in my main menu drop downs so that users can filter all the products that exists in all of the nested child categories of top level categories by colour. Should i remove these to reduce my total link count, nofollow them or leave as is? Its a great site feature for users- i just don't want to be shooting myself in the foot unecessarily. Thanks!

Moving Blog to Custom Domain
Hi All - I am currently attempting to move a blog (companyname.blogspot.com) that has a 2/10 GPR to a custom domain name so that I can get my targeted keywords in the domain name. The new domain will just be www.targetedkeyword.com. There are easy instructions for doing this with the A record and CNAME changes in the Blogger help, but I am worried about losing rank and links if I do this. Can you guys help me understand what the ramifications would be, and how I can accomplish this without losing the 2/10 mojo? Thanks!

Best cross linking strategy for micro sites?
Hi Guys. I created a micro site (A design showcase gallery) away from the main website to attract a lot of links in my space from competitors. It works so well it has become a valuable resource in my industry and I believe I will keep it running and adding content to it. Is the best SEO strategy for the main site simply to link from each page to the main site? Or should I be looking at something else? Thanks, Alan
