What keyword research tools do you recommend to help with SEO?
-
We are looking for a keyword research tool to help with our SEO efforts for our ecommerce site. We sell food gifts and are looking for a tool to help us identify which keywords we should go after. Beyond Google's free tool - what tools would you recommend? We are willing to pay for a tool.

Hi Adam
Here are a list of keyword tools/techniques I use for our keyword research
Google trends - monitor seasonal trends for certain search terms throughout the year
Competition sites - check out your competitors within your sector/subject areas - It's amazing how many large sites still incorporate defined keywords that appear in the meta keywords section of the site!
Hitwise - If you have enough luck/big enough budget to access this tool - this can unearth a goldmine of keywords to target as well as their clickstream report of what keywords/search terms were used before and after leaving your site
Google insights - provides alternative keywords to consider based on the keywords you add
Open Site Explorer - enter your competitor site and run an anchor text report - what key terms are included
Competitor blog sites - analyse your competitor blog sites - usually packed full of keywords they are trying to rank for that is used to point back to their main site
Analytics - Your existing analytics tool should provide you with a vast range of search terms to commence new campaigns and unearth long tail keywords, also check out your google webmaster tools

I'm surprised nobody mentioned WordTracker.com? I just started using WordTracker and I love it. I was a Google Keyword tool guy for a couple years, but found most of their results were on the high side. Wordtracker has provided a much more accurate estimate to a keyword's popularity.

Thanks for talking about Semrush. I would definitely advice you to use that. It will also help you to track your SERP.

with http://ubersuggest.org/ you can research google suggest data for generic keywords.
Its a good starting point if you only have a few generic keywords. Just try it, it is for free.

1. SemRush - SemRush is by far the best tool I have used for keyword research. You can see almost everything you can imagine about all your competitors keywords. You can also get an almost endless list of keywords almost instantly with any search. For example I searched money and instantly got a 10001 long list of keywords including the term money with incredibly useful data which you can save and keep even when you are not a member. This one offers a free trial though you need to give a credit card and cancel before its done.
2. Keyword Country - Keyword country is great. you can search and sort by almost any data types and with all sorts of ranges. You can search by CPC for keywords which is just ridiculous. This one also offers a free trial. Well worth checking out.
3. Market Samurai - From my experience market samurai was my first and favorite keyword tool for a long time and it even comes with a free trial.
4. Adwords Keyword tool - I wasn't much of a fan of this one at first but then I noticed if you log in you can see up to 800 results and use it pretty well to find some good keywords.
Generally I use several tools together to do my research as I find each has its strengths and weaknesses.
This is with over a year of experience. Enjoy!

I also like to use Keyword Spy (www.keywordspy.com). It helps me see keywords my competitors are using. That's always a great place to start.

I tend to start with good ole Adwords, its free and can give you a very quick glimpse at whats being searched for and whats not. However the competition bar is less than verbose..
Which is where I, like Damion, use Market Samurai to go that step further and look further into the competition

Liked Samurai. Do you combine the results with KW from any other tools?

Have a look at Market Samurai -- http://www.marketsamurai.com/ -- it's a paid tool with (I believe) free access to the keyword analysis module.
Don't be put off by the spamminess of their webpage - the product is sound.
Market Samurai lets you do a lot of heavy lifting with Google Keyword Tool via the Adwords API. It also pulls down global and country-specific competition. Export all this into Excel and you can crunk and ply the data until a niche presents itself.
I like to think of Market Samurai not so much as a keyword tool in its own right, but as a way to use Google's keyword tool in a smart way.

Beyond the basic Google AdWords tool, I spend a lot of time going through Google Insights, which is especially good as a predictor of future searches instead of being purely backward-looking.
Open Site Explorer helps you see what keywords are being used in links. This is particularly helpful when researching what links your competitors are getting that you're not.

A Solution to Keywords Being Grouped in Google Keyword Planner
Hi guys, I am trying to get search traffic for a list of keywords which I put together a few years ago for one of my clients, this was before Google made changes to their Keyword Planner. When I am adding the list into Google Keyword Planner it is "grouping" a number of the keywords/phrases together, and therefore removing 13 of the keywords from the original list of 59 keywords. Is there a way around this so I can get search volume for the original list, and not the cut down one? I am specifically using Google Keyword Planner as I want to get search volume for a number of specific locations in the UK. Any comments/feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Jack. Small Business website help please. All help is appreciated and thank you in advance.
Hello I am working on my families website, it is a Colorado barn construction site. I am new here, so any and all help is appreciated. I have already gotten some excellent tips for general seo, but now trying to pinpoint in on a target. I am reading as much as I can everyday. My questions are: Keywords... Ok so when I type in keywords and the results come up, even with an exact match, I am 12 pages back. So what influences the keyword rankings? Is it best to add in like say a service into a paragraph? Like I have been using Ubersuggest or however its spelled, and so would you take keyword phrases and then try to naturally add them to paragraphs? Is this how rankings are created? Thus your site being found? I have major competition that does not even have the keywords I type in, found on there site, and they still rank #1. So I feel that it must lead into my next question DA. Domain Authority: I assume domain authority comes into play. The leading company in my world has a 50 and I have a 15. I am trying to raise this, and using the Moz tools I see my competitor has like 400 edu links. So in some ways it seems like wow get as many edu links as possible. But now it seems like this is not good? Like everyone is afraid to get links that may be considered spam in nature. That being said, would you still go after edu links? Media: So kind of an odd question, but does adding a video to a home page help bounce rates? Like maybe if they sit and watch a two minute video that is interesting, then they may check out the rest of the site? Or for the sake of load times, do you keep the homepage as fast as possible? Thank you for any tips. Also if you view my site, please give me any negative feedback as you can to help me improve. Thank you Chris

Ignore keywords that have no data in the Google Keyword Tool?
Hello, There are some keywords that have no monthly search data in the Google Keyword Tool. In many cases, this is because there have been very few searches for the keyword. Would you recommend focusing on other keywords that do have search data in the Google Keyword Tool? Perhaps focusing too far out on the long tail of search results can be less productive than focusing on keywords that have proven that at least some people care about them. What do you think? Thanks!

What came first the content or the keyword research?
So I've been searching high and low to try and answer this. I just cant seem to get this part down and i know its the most important part. I always run into the issue where i am building a e commerce or some other site and i have it all set up but no content. So i start doing keyword research. In which the market niche that i am working on now is really broad, so its really hard to research. I then end up getting frustrated because the competition for the words are really high. But back on track, i get frustrated and then kaboom! i don't get the results i want and i am back to square one and no content is made or nothing. So my webpage gets nothing. So i took a step back and wondered, should i make all the content first and then the keyword research and then go back and "revise" my website content with all my keywords that i a trying to target? Sounds like a dumb question but i just wanted feedback and input on how people do this and go forth with everything.

Google keyword rankings
I show a MON icon (it looks like a calendar page) for all my google rankings. The icon is not clickable. Can anybody tell me what this is? Also, I use to be highly ranked in 100's of keywords in google now barely anything. The domain is several years old and has performed in well in the past. Can't figure out what is going on.

Keywords in SEO Moz versus Keywords on pages
II'm a little confused by how the SEO Moz keywords relate to our page keywords. Should all the keywords we put in SEO Moz be in our page keywords? Can our SEO Moz keywords span the kepywords of severla pages or do we need ot tighten up and only use 5 for example keywords in SEO Moz and on our pages? Thanks!
