If you have a picture of the link profile you are trying to build (usually based on competitor analysis) then that helps guide you.
However my one guiding principal has always been to try not to be overly reliant on too few tactics. That probably means I've missed out on some easy wins over the years. However it also means that I have sites that have been sitting at the top of their industry results for over a decade, never leaving page 1.
Mix it up. Find something that works - then find something else. No reason why articles can't be part of that, but if you are producing that content anyway then why not put some aside for guest posting? If you are researching guest posting opportunities why not see what else those sites are looking for?

I don't believe it helps as much, no. Particularly as the lowest quality end.
I think that a small part of that is algo based, but really that a lot of the article directories have been devalued as a result of algo change - so have less juice to pass.
However it's still a way to get links, with anchors you control, from a diverse range of IPs. Hard to ignore that.

Hi mat,
Thanks mate - much apprciated..
Do you mean that article submission to help with SEO does not help that much anymore??

Hi Gareth,
There is a pretty comprehensive list here, that also shows follow/nofollow status of links, Google PR and alexa ranking: http://www.vretoolbar.com/articles/directories.php
I'd imagine you'll find something there!
In this post-panda world the benefit from article submissions is slightly harder to reap, but it's still there. I'm favouring dealing in smaller numbers on sites where you can build more of a profile. Plenty of those in that list.
Hope it helps.

Hi, on SEO article submissions, do I only include the link to the page I am trying to promote or is it best practice to also include a link to home page or parent page?
Good day. I am writing articles for submission, I would just like some help with the page structure. Do I only include the link for the page that I would like to promote or is it advisable to include other page links, such as home page or the parent category too? Any help would be appreciated

Images in articles - copying the authority in my industry
Hello, For my site, BobWeikel.com, I have an article about the type of coaching I do. It's called "What is NLP?" Here's the link. The two authorities in my industry which I respect the most have no (or sometimes one) images or anything in their best articles - it's all just text. Some examples of these authoritative articles are here and here. Note the second article has one image in it. That's common for that author, and he's the top person in the field. Note that that first link has no images at all. I'd like to refine my article until I can compete. Should I leave out all images since that's what the big guys are doing? Thanks!

How to articles for FAQ, but wait it's shoes or clothing
Hello, I was given the great advice of sticking with 5 long, stellar, graphically well developed articles in the article section of an ecommerce site. And to put lots of how-tos articles (links to them) in the FAQ. But what articles do you put in the FAQ if you're selling things like shoes or clothing? Thanks.

How can I rank using translated content?
My friend has a website with similar content to mine, in a different language however. He has allowed me to translate his content if I link to it every post (can be nofollow). Does Google penalize me for clearly translated content? How can I make sure it ranks well? BTW, if I convince him that I don't link to him, is it better SEO-wise? Best,

Need a referee on article links
I need a referee on an issue. I have hired a company that does a decent job of creating a social presence for our company and its web presence. But the main feature I hired them for was to create and cast articlesinto the social sphere with back links to our main site. This was based on a premise that backlinks still matter. Instead the articles and posts they create are 1) posted on a separate url blog page maintained by them (but branded similar to our brand term) and 2) casts out to other social sites with back links to their 'blog-type' site, not our main site. In essence its a blog off the main url with articles/posts touting our product but linking back to the off site blog. I have requested that all the articles created monthly by them and cast out into the social sphere containe anchor text appropriate hyperlinks to our main site, not the blog type site, and they are resisting. I am willing to make a switch if the premise of creating links to my main site still holds in the SEO world. Their assertion is that it doesn't. They are getting the blog site to rank for certain key words that we also are trying to rank for and the blog site does have links to our site on their site such as an "our website" button. And they do create a lot of social activity buzz with twitter, youtube etc for our brand name. In all i like what they do except in two months they have created 305 back links to the blog and our main site has only 8. When they report they show me all the words the blog site ranks for, as if the main site doesn't exist. But wouldn't best practice still be for them to create the backlinks to our main site, not the blog and worry more about how the main site is ranking, not the cast site? Or has the SEO world changed so much that it doesn't matter. I want to be fair but I am drwaing a line in the sand on this.
