Is it possible for one man to go against industry leaders in serps?
-
Hi,
Is it possible for an individual to go against the big boys in a industry sector?
Lets say flowers in the UK, all the massive flower companies go for 2 keywords:
'flowers delivered' (30,000 ems) and 'flowers by post' (30,000 ems)
Would it be possible to start a new site and within 6 months (July) be up in the top 5?
Scrap any exact match domains as there gone, I'm talking about creating a brand such as flowerpower.co.uk picking a term and going for it.
Is this possible?

I was able to single handed start my business in my back bedroom with a dell PC and £400 in a business bank account. I took my company site to the Top 5 for Internet marketing in the UK in competition with companies with thousands of investment.
I think you have to look at the positives a single guy or smaller team has over a larger organisation. You can act right away without waiting for a boards decision or internal decisions on budgets.
In the longterm you will learn that as EGOL mentioned you need to start building a team where people can cover different skills.
No one person can cover all areas or has expertise in all.

I really like this question!
If you are a content area expert and your competitors are not making that type of investment in their sites then a one or two man shop could effectively compete against huge corporations in an information niche.
Huge corporations usually produce chest-thumping content but you will produce altruistic, evergreen, informative content - that will have enormous appeal to the people who are using the web in your niche.
Most people can't do that.
On top of that.... you need one or two people who have (in addition to the content expertise) an ability to do all of the SEO, development, photography, video, research, etc... superbly well.
This constellation of content expertise, presentation ability, SEO savvy and usability skills rarely occurs in one person, or even a small team or even in most large web-savvy companies.
So, that is my answer to the question in your title.... in your post you say that you are in the retail "flowers" industry.
To that, my answer is...... if you have everything that I described above.. you better have it in awesome proportions because you are going up against some very savvy, aggressive, hungry, well-established, brilliant, well-funded, and very powerful Goliaths.
You better practice with your sling, have a really strong arm, and pick up some really good rocks.
You might be able to carve out a city niche... maybe... I am not betting.

Hi Activity. Your question is interesting in that the two search terms you presented suggest two different types of business - or perhaps one business offering two types of service.
"Flowers delivered" suggests search results would produce florists specializing in delivery (who knows some of these businesses may not even take walk-in business). "Flowers by post" obviously suggests this business would mail them to you before they wilt and turn brown.
Alan's keyword "florist London" suggests to me I would find a florist in London that I could walk or drive to and buy some flowers on the way home from work.
Perhaps the first question is not whether you can conquer the giants, but what is the business model you or your client intend to pursue?
Once you've identified what kind of business you intend to run, do your keyword research for your niche/approach and build it from there. Giants were babies once too.
Unless a person has a boatload of cash to spend on PPC, then felling the giants or taking some of their business will be challenging in the timeframe you suggest.
Include in your research a little work in Google Insights after you've identified your business model. You may get some good keyword ideas for localizing your SEO at startup.

Possible yes, probable no.
I would look at the quality of the big boys, big companies do not always have good SEO, some are very spammy.
Just me maybe, but If i was looking for flowers, i would use a term like "Florist London"

Really struggling with serps....
My website is only a week old or so but I have no pages showing on the serps or at least in the first few hundred results! I have many other hobby websites that had pages in the top 100 results instantly and the niche of this new website is tiny and not saturated so it should be up there already! All pages are indexed but non showing in the results. it feels like I have been penalised or something but I don’t see how or why? my website is www.magnet-fishing.co.uk of anyone can see anything obvious that I am missing regards Andy

Benefit of getting more then one link from a site?
Hi Guys, Is there any benefit (purely for SEO - link building) to getting more than one link from a domain if you already have 1? From my understanding, even if you had 100 links from a domain, that really counts as 1 for link authority. So from this, i don't see much point in getting more then 1 link. Is this a right assumption? Cheers.

Sever SERP Issues on Teem.com (Long Post)
I work for Teem.com. Here is the story:We used to be Eventboard.io and we enjoyed strong rankings and a healthy organic presence. We changed our name, our website, and expanded upon on our product offerings and launched Teem.com. A lot of content was very similar from Eventboard.io. We had 11 of our big keywords ranking in the top 3 positions. We launched the new website in early October of 2016.Here is what we have done: We setup a network of 301 redirects for the homepage, company pages, events page, blog posts, and each and every long tail page. Everything from the old site had a new place to live on the new site with very similar content. This list was then passed to our server/it folk to implement (we run a StaticPress site so we don't control those from within WordPress). Both the old and new site are WordPress websites. Setup a site domain move through Google Search Console Combed through Teem.com to take care of SEO issues using various tools. We know there are still some issues (speed, etc.) that aren't helping us, but we are in a good state overall in terms of technical SEO. Deep dive into the domain name history, backlinks, internal linking (which could be better). Developed more long-tail content (more coming). Here is what is weird: We have almost no organic traffic (or traction) since our rebrand. We understood we would be hit hard as the domain name was changed, the content changed, and the CMS was revamped. The only real organic search traffic we get is branded to our old name (which is luckily the name of one of our products): Eventboard. We rank well for this and see high conversion from this keyword. We rank very well for "conference room displays" on Bing for our long tail and home page, but we show up at position 23 for our iTunes app page on Google and 33 for the long tail page. We dominate in bing for our company name "Teem" and finally show up Google for our Facebook page in position 13th. Our website is way way down the list (beyond page 5) for the exact company name with super low competition. Site performance has been good, user feedback has been good, site uptime has been great. No red flags here. No blaring errors in search console besides maybe a few 404 pages that are cleaned up every few weeks. We have no idea what to do. Have engaged with multiple SEO agencies. Been told over and over to be patient because of the changes we have made, but we still see no progress 6 months later. We think the issue might be related to something misfiring with our 301 redirects, based on some referral information.Any insight would be greatly, greatly appreciated. We are stumped. Thanks for any help!

Am I turning a non geo-keyword into a geographic one?
Our client has a high powered site with tons of authority. They dominate in the eastern united states for multiple keyterms that relate to their service based company. However their closest competitor, a site with literally HALF of their authority, ranks ahead of them all over the world in markets outside of NYC. The client is using the terms "NYC and New York" all over their site, is it possible that they are giving themselves a local limitation by doing so when their competitors dont? The keyword itself doesn't necessarily lend itself to a local geo-based search result, but are we artificially CREATING that situation ourselves?

Why does Google add my domain as a suffix to page title in SERPS?
Hi, If I do a search in Google - for one our products on our site, our site comes up - but it would appear that google is adding our domain name as a suffix to our title in the results... Anyone else seen this? Can I do anything about it? I would prefer it not to appear. Thanks!

Combining two pages into one
I've got two pages I'd like to combine into one. These two URLs: widgets.com/about_us.php & widgets.com/contact_us.php would become: widgets.com/about-us Two questions... 1. Is it okay to combine the content into one page and setup 301 redirects for both pages (without losing page rank)? 2. Do I keep the original pages in my sitemap.xml file or just take them out after I setup the redirect? Thanks in advance!

Rich Snippits - Product Data showing in serps
Google "halloween costumes", see the yandy listing that shows product data and pricing under their listing? How did they do this? I realize its a rich snippit of some kind but i don't see in the code how or where this is. I've yet to see anyone but Amazon influence the SERPS yet with rich snippits. Pretty interesting
