Should the Google Plus button be sitewide?
-
Hi All,
We are in the process of adding a Google Plus button to our site (to the header, sitewide) - at http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/
My question is, should the button have behavioural characteristics that apply to the whole site, or only for that page that it is clicked on. Consider these scenarios:
- A customer clicks on the G+ button from the homepage - they then 'like' that page (our homepage, i.e. our site)
- A customer clicks on the G+ button from a category page - e.g. http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/cheap-necklaces-s/1818.htm. Because the button is in the header and sitewide, should the customer be 'liking' http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/ or http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/cheap-necklaces-s/1818.htm?
- We are also adding a Google + button to the item template, e.g. on http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/product-p/jn1003.htmsomewhere above the Add to Cart button. When they press the button in this instance, they are 'liking' only that page (which is how I would want the functionality to work).
So my question is to do with point 2 above. Much like a Facebook 'like/fan count' type button that exists in the header of many sites, should the G+ button function the same way? E.g. if we have a count of 10 in the header on the homepage, then there is also a count of 10 sitewide? Or should this reset for every subsequent page that a customer lands on, and by pressing the G+ button on that page, they are 'liking' only that page.
Which is better for SEO? Several different +1's to different pages (e.g. from the necklaces, bracelets and earrings category pages for a more natural structure) or several +1's all pointing to the homepage?
Any help or suggestions regarding G+ button or the service in general would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the responses. Just a quick follow up question - would you make the links to these social media pages/accounts no follow as to not leak any link juice from your page?
Or by making them followed, your social media accounts (particularly a page like Pinterest where some of the links are followed) gain a higher page authority and are thus more useful from a SEO point of view.
Or is this just a really dumb question?

On our site I use it on each individual page (post). Same with Facebook, stubmle upon, pintrest, etc...
Like someone mentioned, I want people to be directed back to a specific post. I did put a Facebook like box on our home page which allows people to like our facebook page directly from our home page (which has been very effective) and I thought about adding a "like" button for our home page, but it would be sort of confusing I think to people. There would basically be two different like buttons....
I may experiment with having a place in the footer to like our main page: site wide. I'll have to see how it goes.
-
I always put this sitewide these days, other than pages like directions and contact. Web developers hate it, but I find the share/etc., info from each individual page really useful - ie the pages that aren't engaging with customers are worked on until they DO.
I've heard talk that some users find like counters insulting. Along the lines of 'how dare you ask me for a like' yet whenever I've done site-wide stuff, I've seen improved stats - both visitor numbers and engagement.

I think you should have one button on your home page to "like" the brand and one for any kind of different products you sell.
It makes sense, in my opinion, that one can appreciate the company itself or its products.

Hi Bradussel, Now, today, the first of June, it is possible to add a plus one button (+1) to every website! Google announced that they release it for live use today, after a two months test period. (Yes, you have been able to test the Google plus one button already, but only for search results, not directly on websites.) Read on for finding out how to** add the plus one button to your website**!
How to add plus one button to website
You can go to this page on Google. There is provided a code that you have to insert on your website and your blog on the places where you want the button. It is very simple, just a simple javascript tag in the header of your page, and a custom Google code on the place where you want the plus one button on your website.
This is the code that goes into the header:
This is the code that you insert where you want the +1 button to appear:
That’s it! The plus one button will now appear on your site! Like this you can add it on single pages and posts also in WordPress, but if you want a separate plus one button for every post on your blog page (often front page) you need to tweak it a little more.
One thing to note, you have to be logged in to Google (Gmail for example) for being able to use the button. I added it to this blog now as well, you can try to plus-one this post by clicking on the button, it is on the top of the post, beside the Facebook- and Twitterbutton.
Benefits of the Google Plus One 1+ Button
For SEO purposes I think that the Google Plus One button will be beneficial for website owners and bloggers – especially bloggers who have some built in community that will naturally participate in the clicking of buttons and things. If you tend to get a fair amount of Facebook Likes/Shares or Retweets on a post, you should definitely see results with this new Google 1+ Button.
What we know is that the activity on the Plus One Button will effect search engine results and placements. What we don’t know just yet, is how. As with all things Google.
I do feel that visually, a post that may fall in third or fourth results, but is showing recommendations via the 1+ button, will be more likely to get organic searchers clicking through to the site than a third or fourth place result would otherwise see.
I have better idea. Google +1 was introduce to compete with Faceback. So, we will include the Google +1 button wherever we have included the Facebook button or the places preferable to add a socializing button.

I hope that your query had been solved.

Hi Bradrussel,
G+, FB or Twitter buttons... With all of them I would point out the page you are on. (It is quite logical if you think about it).
Think about the following scenario: you are a visitor, go to a website, check a product... You want to share it with your friends. You want to share the product, and not the brand (right?!)
I believe that it would attract more targeted visits if you could share the products themselves instead of brand.
I hope this helped,
Istvan

Is google plus really useful?
Hi guys first of all i am really thankful for such an opportunity to test such a wonderful app and i didnt know there is a Q&A community here 🙂 i was actually searching on google about google plus and end up here but the thread i bumped into is a bit outdated anyway a little background on what i am doing. Our company have a 15 local branches, its a service that we provide on our local clients. I am totally new to SEO like 6 months and i am really learning a lot and i am now learning on how to build my own backlinks and my 1st struggle is on google+ actually i am dismayed that its too confusing (at first) but somehow i manage to understand but still unsure please correct me. So google+ has 2 type 1 is for personal and 1 is for brand am i correct? So since we have 15 local branches what i did is create a personal page and make it as our business page and then claimed all the 15 branches on google maps and all is verified now. You think im correct on creating a personal page and make it as our main business page? I asked because i want to create brands page on each branch or do I even need brand pages for my branches? Was thinking of this custom URLS for our main page (which is our personal page) +OurBusiness for the branch brand page +OurBusinessCity you think it would be cool? 🙂 then on about sections (brand page) where i can add links on tag line description i will put the dedicate branch page of our website www.ourbusiness.com/city, then on that website page i will also put our google plus brand page +OurBusinessCity so its a 2 way link. Please bare with me as i am fairly new to this and i am not really sure if my ideas are stupid so please dont laugh 🙂 By the way my another question is about the ABOUT ME section of google+ personal page, when i add link on the description its a nofollow, i know cause i have this extension on my browser that detects do/nofollow links but on the link section its a dofollow. On the other hand google+ brand page has no links section so if you have a link and want to include it on your google+ brand page easy way to do it is put it on description and i just found out its a do follow HOWEVER it seems like the links on both pages (personal, brand) are not seen by search engines i tried it on several google search simulator and also checked the source code of the pages and i cant seem to find the links so my question is, is google really that useful when it comes to backlink building? Another question is that when i build brand pages i have to use our brand name and so all the branches have the same brand names includes our personal page so all of those 16 pages have the same name, will it be ok? Another question is that is there anyway that i can edit its meta description? 🙂 please i am really new to google so bare with me. Thank you so much in advance and hope to hear from the gurus 😉

Is it worth keeping google+ for seo purposes?
Hi My company has a Google+ page with about 3000 followers and very little engagement. We are considering deleting this page as it is not worth the effort of us creating content and posting on here for the little engagement we get. Do you think this would impact our SEO in any way? Thanks Emily

Question about understanding Google Ranking System
Hi, I have too many question that I need answer to understand Google ranking system. I have been analyzing different website in different niche, but puzzling to understand how Google rank actually. Some websites have good number of backlinks with good SEO metrics, but some low SEO profiled websiites outrank good sites. I am here with my first question. I am working for one client website who sell sex toys online. So we are optimizing keywords like sex toys, buy sex toys, sex shop, sex toy store and too many keywords to rank on google.ca. My client website is cupidboutique.com. We have some competitors that I want to mention below: 1. PinkCherry: This is one of our big competitor. They have 2 domain one is for US and one is for Canada. Both websites ranking well for different keywords. Basically .ca domain is more successful than .com domain. But I am surprise why Google consider the websites for rank. If you see, both websites are identical, that means both website have same product, same category structure, and the most important all products description are duplicate on each domain. On google webmaster guideline, google mention that if 2 domain have identical content, then Google ignore the duplicate one in ranking. But still both websites ranking for different search term. I compare the SEO metrics of our domain and their .ca domain, there is not big difference. Our websites also have good number of links, good PA/DA, even more good number of social sharing than them. But our rankings are not even comparable with them. They are ranking within 20-30th on Google for different product category keywords, but not our. 2. Hushcanada: This is another website ranking well, but I a surprise how? This website is ranking on very high competitive keyword with very fewer number of backlinks. Their PA/DA, number of backlinks, social sharing all metrics are very few. Their business also established recently that is 2013, which I found through archive.org, whereas our client business has been running since 2003-2004. As a Ecommerce business website their homepage is not showing any product , their catalog can be found under "shop online" page only. There are even some more websites ranking well with very low SEO metrics in this niche. If Google is not looking for these SEO staff, then what other staff Google looks to rank website? Hope I will get some favorable answer of my question.

Facebook Likes, Google +1s tactic - is this a good idea
Hello, For our eCommerce site, we're considering doing the following: When people call in to place an order by phone, we take their order and tell them while we have them on the phone that if they click the Facebook Like button and Google +1 button on our site's home page, we'll knock $3 off their total. We would just show them where the buttons are and refresh our screen to make sure the count went up by one like and one +1 when the customer said that they pressed the buttons. Then, we would continue with their phone order and just knock off $3.00 I may not do this just because it may be grey hat, but it seems 100% safe forever. If you recommend against doing this, can you think of any 100% white hat way to do the same thing? Thanks.

Google +1 Personal vs Business
A client asked me an interesting question. How do you +1 as your business page and not your personal account. Is this possible to do considering they are under the same login?

Facebook Like Button or Like Box
Hi, A client has a FB like button on their website but is frustrated that those "likes" are disconnected from their company FB page. It is possible that they could change their website like button, to a like box, which will then mean people are liking their FB page and give them a greater opportunity for on-going engagement through FB. However, from an SEO perspective is it better for them to attract likes & potential sharing of their website content rather than their FB content? Thanks.

How are Google Plus pages related to Google Plus Local pages?
How are Google Plus pages related to Google Plus Local pages and what is the best way to join/link them? e.g. if I go to Starbucks Google Plus page https://plus.google.com/117575809843355974839/posts, where can I see their store locations or google Places pages? If I go to a Google Places page from Google Maps - which now takes you to a Google Plus 'Places' page - how is that Google Plus Places page related to that companies main Google Plus page - I can't see a way to go between them. See: https://plus.google.com/117861970252906134982/about?gl=au&hl=en Is there a way to connect these two kinds of pages for a business?
