Is Google Webmaster tools Accurate?
-
Is Google webmaster Tools data completely inaccurate, or am I just missing something? I noticed a recent surge in 404 errors detected 3 days ago (3/6/11) from pages that have not existed since November 2011.
They are links to tag and author archives from pages initially indexed in August 2011. We switched to a new site in December 2011 and created 301 redirects from categories that no longer exist, to new categories. I am a little perplexed since the Google sitemap test shows no 404 errors, neither does SEO MOZ Crawl test, yet under GWT site diagnostics, these errors, all 125 of them, just showed up.
Any thought/insights?
We've worked hard to ensure a smooth site migration and now we are concerned.

No problem, and good luck hunting it down

Thanks Charles. Never would have have thought of AW Stats..and the WMT article was very helpful. Yes it is mostly annoying, since it's hard to explain to a client that errors "are not really errors" sometimes. They are attorneys and want specific explanations...until now this was un-explainable.
Thanks again.

Do you run a log file analyzer like AW Stats? If not you should be able to set it up and have it build stats for you as long as you have your log files laying around.
The reason I ask is that AW Stats will show you what files on your site are throwing 404 errors specifically. It might be that it isn't a page, but a file that is referenced by multiple pages in your site that no longer exists. This would throw a 404 response, and depending on how your system handles 404's the google bot might be getting redirected to a 404 page when trying to access that file.
It's not highly likely, but I would check into that.
If you are concerned about the 404's causing problems for your rankings you shouldn't worry about it in most cases. Check out the article here for more details: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/05/do-404s-hurt-my-site.html
If it is just annoying you I would dig into the log files and see exactly when the 404 is being thrown, and what the file is that is doing it.

How to get visibility in Google Discover?
Hey everyone, I run a website that publish articles about pets. I have read some great things about Google Discover and the potential traffic it can bring to publishers (Condé Nast reported up to 20% of traffic coming from Discover in the US, at a certain point). I am currently trying to get indexed and after reading Google guidelines and a Ahrefs guide, I have made many optimizations to my site: structured data, creating an author page, fixing image size and publishing date... so far, it's not working. I feel the lack of a knowledge graph for my business may affect my chances. I'm currently building a GMB page to fix this. Do you have other recommendations or success stories of your own experiments with Discover? An example of an article I tried to get indexed was https://www.lebernard.ca/teletravail-chien-guide-survie/. Obviously, I'm not expecting feedback on the quality of the content since it's in French, but I'm curious if you see anything from a technical perspective that doesn't work. Thanks a lot for your help! Charles

Google does not want to index my page
I have a site that is hundreds of page indexed on Google. But there is a page that I put in the footer section that Google seems does not like and are not indexing that page. I've tried submitting it to their index through google webmaster and it will appear on Google index but then after a few days it's gone again. Before that page had canonical meta to another page, but it is removed now.

How to handle broken links to phantom pages appearing in webmaster tools
Hi,Would love to hear different experiences and thoughts on this one. We have a site that is plagued with 404's in the Webmaster Tools. A significant number of them have never existed, for instance affiliates have linked to them with the wrong URL or scraper sites have linked to them with a truncated version of the URL and an ellipsis eg; /my-nonexistent... What's the best way to handle these? If we do nothing and mark as fixed, they reappear in the broken links report. If we 301 redirect and mark as fixed they reappear. We tried 410 (gone forever) and marking as fixed; they re-appeared. We have a lot of legacy broken links and we would really like to clean up our WMT broken link profile - does anyone know of a way we can make these links to non extistent pages disappear once and for all? Many thanks in advance!

Dropped from Google?
My website www.weddingphotojournalist.co.uk appears to have been penalised by Google. I ranked fairly well for a number of venue related searches from my blog posts. Generally I'd find myself somewhere on page one or towards the top of page two. However recently I found I am nowhere to be seen for these venue searches. I still appear if I search for my name, business name and keywords in my domain name. A quick check of Yahoo and I found I am ranking very well, it is only Google who seem to have dropped me. I looked at Google webmaster tools and there are no messages or clues as to what has happened. However it does show my traffic dropping off a cliff edge on the 19th July from 850 impressions to around 60 to 70 per day. I haven't made any changes to my website recently and hadn't added any new content in July. I haven't added any new inbound links either, a search for inbound links does not show anything suspicious. Can anyone shed any light on why this might happen?

Google Cache Is Blank for Text-only
Hi, I'm doing some SEO for www.suprafootwear.com, and for some reason when I go to text-only in google cache, nothing shows up. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:suprafootwear.com&es_sm=91&strip=1 That seems to be the case for all of the different pages on the site, but the content is still appearing on the serp. I have never seen this before, and I'm not sure what's happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
