Any ideas?
-
I've been working on http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/ for a while, and we moved on to a SEO-friendly platform in November last year. Rankings have stabilised after dropping heavily on the old platform, but they haven't improved inline with the amount of link building we've done.
Does anybody have any ideas for tricks that we could have missed? Any advice would be much apptreciated.

Thanks Edward. Regarding the page speed stuff, Google rate the page speed of the GZ site at 91/100 – with the javascript being the only place where points are being deducated. The only problem is, the JS relates to the trustpilot widget, and social links at the bottom of the page – neither of which work when they are deferred.
I'm looking into the content now!
-
Thanks! Is the H1/logo a real issue? I was under the impression it was OK. I'll check out the duplicate content too.
-
Yep, it's live now.
-
And more duplicate content..
"Walking boots are possibly the most essential and personal piece of outdoor kit you can buy, but once you've found that perfect pair you'll want to keep them in tip-top shape."
http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/blog/january-2011/how-to-clean-and-reproof-walking-boots

Maybe the mistake of putting the logo in the H1 is done by the software (it does happen). otherwise i agree

There are quite a few things on page that could be improved: http://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.gear-zone.co.uk/oTasIFqU
You make the classic seo mistake by putting your logo inside an H1:
Gear-Zone
As already pointed out, some of the coding is a bit messy
There are also potential duplicate content issues: eg /outdoor-footwear
The content in the section "How to Clean and Reproof Walking Boots and Outdoor Footwear" is displayed on the category page and also by clicking through to the gear guide page.
I would re-write the content on the category pages so it is more unique.

Neooptic,
what software package do you use? You call it SEO Friendly but when i look at the source code of your page it is not. A lot of Javascript code in the page, a lot of hidden form field etc.
This could be the problem.
And indeed, sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools, resubmit you website might also work, or keep on linkbuilding as it should do the trick eventually.
kind regards
-
Ok, next question will be
Did you submit a new sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools?
-
Thanks for your reply. Yes, we took care of all the redirects, 301ing to all relevant pages where possible. All others were sent to the homepage.
-
Hi Neooptic,
After moving to the new platform, did you ensure to redirect from the old URL system to the new one?
That can cause a massive drop and it is usually forgotten by many.
Gr.,
Istvan

I was reading this post http://www.clambr.com/link-building-tools/ about how he had basically outreached to experts in the field and each one had shared this post with their followers. I am wondering how this could translate to our small business marketing and design blog I am really struggling for content ideas that will work in regards to popularity and link building.

If your site has used www for the last few years is it a good idea to direct to non www?
I had a website moved to wpengine lately and when the developer set it up on wpengine he used http://example.com/. For the last few years the site has been directing to http://www.example.com/ Should I redirect the site to http://www.example.com/ to avoid losing indexed pages and google rankings?

Penguin update... is this a good idea?
I have one site that got hit by the latest google updates. Penguin and EMD. The site was making me nice income but now with the traffic drop its not. I was going to 301 to a new domain but was reading that if it works to bring it back in the serps it would only last 3-4 weeks... then i though just get a domain and add the content over time and get rid of the old domain. + take care and build better links. I bought website that already ranks and been around since about 2003 online. Not hit by the updates and has few goood links. Would it be a better idea to move content to this site and make it grow? Not sure what to do..

Good idea? Dynamic to Perkalink URLs for over 10k pages.
Hey guys, We're looking for someone who has already done this. We know permalinks are SEO best practices but changing site stucture can cause alot of ranking and traffic loss. Is it a wise idea to make the transition? How long will we see a dip in rankings before bouncing back?

This is a bit of a melon-twister - Anyone have any ideas?
As a novice I created my main site, (waspkilluk.co.uk) and it was geo-targeted for my local City (Bristol). As I got better I created sub-domains(nailsea.waspkilluk.co.uk) for the smaller towns. Now I am suffering because I need to create a sub-domain for BristoI, allowing the main site to be free from geo-targeting and thus rank more cleanly for specific topics e.g flea control, wasp control etc, etc. My question is simply this - How do I avoid or limit damaging my existing rankings when I swap the site content over to the sub-domain and remove the key word Bristol from the root domains pages. Not a short question, but any thoughts would be lovely to hear.

Any idea why I can't add a Panoramio image link to my Google Places page?
Hey guys & gals! Last week, I watched one of the Pro Webinars on here related to Google Places. Since then, I have begun to help one of my friends with his GP page to get my feet wet. One of the tips from the webinar was to geotag images in Panoramio to use for your images on the Places page. However, when I try to do this, I just get an error that says they can't upload it at this time. I tried searching online for answers, but the G support pages that I have found where someone asks the same question, there is no resolution. Can anyone help? PS - I would prefer not to post publicly the business name, URL, etc. So, if that info is needed, I can PM. Thanks a lot!

SEO Ideas for B to B Website?
Hi, I am running SEO for a medium-sized B-to-B website. We sell cloud-based software to other businesses/organizations. Our site currently consists of static product-related pages that already have been highly optimized (correct tags, rich content etc) and a blog that we updated regularly. For 2012, I've been tasked with coming up with ideas to significantly increase SEO. Assuming no budget constrains, what are some other general content ideas / other strategies to increase SEO for a B-to-B website? Some of my current ideas include: starting a keyword-targeted YouTube video series and acquiring more links. What are other tactics that could work for a b-to-b site? Thanks!
