Set up Google Analytics by product category
-
Does anyone know if it's possible to set up Google Analytics data by product category? We sell roughly twenty product categories on our ecommerce site. We can look at our analytics performance for the site overall and drill down to specific pages, but what we really want to see is our performance by product category. Our product categories can include up to 5000 products. Any pointers on how to do this?

Jim,
There is a call within the Google Analytics eCommerce tracking snippet specifically for this.
See: http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/gaTrackingEcommerce.html
Within the _addItem call you see this line:
'Green Medium', // category or variation
Most people leave this blank as it is not required, but it can be great for categorizing your transactions. Once you start passing data there, you'll see your "Product Category" reports start to fill up in eCommerce reports.

You can do this in gogle analytics within the "goal" section anmd in the "multi funnel" section.
In the goal section you can choose an ecommerce transaction and classify it either by product category prior to checkout or after checkout you can filter out the product catgeory in a report.
Make sure you set up the specific "goals" at the front end by category with as much detail as possible....
good luck....

Google Analytics - Referral traffic being reported as Direct traffic
Hi, I have a link on my www homepage to another subdomain website. Both websites are served on https, and have independent Google Analytics properties. However, the traffic from the www site to the subdomain site is being reported as Direct, and not Referral traffic. Any ideas why? See image provided for context... RCn6HER

Google Analytics Goals - Button Tracking
Does anyone know if there is a really easy way to track a button in Google Analytics yourself? It seems that most button click goal setups involve some use of tricky code and I'm wondering if there is a much easier way to do this that will allow us to simply setup and track certain button clicks as goal conversions in Analytics. Your help here is much appreciated!

Whats (Other) traffic in Google Analytics?
When I look through all our clients, a few are receiving the majority of their traffic from (other). [ Acquisition > Channels > (Other) ]. The only option in (other) is "website" or "offline", whatever that may be. And even weirder, the avg session duration is 0:00. Any idea what this may be?

Google Analytics, new property or views?
Hi All We have an existing Google analytics account which was customised relatively heavily a few years back, with custom variables, e-commerce tracking and the a large number of filters. We have determined that the custom variables and e-commerce tracking, at least for now, are no longer required and actually complicating our lives. We want to simplify the account and add a fresh set of goals and events. Our initial train of thought was to create an entire new property with the usual views, raw, test, main etc. We are proposing to retain both properties (6 months) so we can still do some comparative stuff. We're now wondering if we should retain the existing property and just create new views, the downside being that whilst we can compare data with previous periods it's meaningless to some degree as the filters etc are different. The plus of more views is that we're not firing the tag twice retaining two properties. Views and opinions welcome. Thanks

I have set up the segment as per the attached image. Thanks in advance! Alex E6XnO.png
