Have SEOmoz members ever considered joining forces with link-building?
-
I really hope this isn't interpreted as gray hat or spammy, so please let me know if it is! I'm just always racking my brain to try to come up with creative link-building strategies.
Since we're all SEOs who are presumably doing some form of link-building, what if we got together and examined one anothers' sites, to find opportunities for links? I'm sure that still doesn't make sense, so I'll try to clarify.
OK, I've been seeing an in-house guy around here that works for a place that sells coat hangers. What if I had an existing blog post that mentioned coat hangers, allowing me to make that phrase a link to this site?
LET IT BE KNOWN THAT I'M NOT SUGGESTING A FREE-FOR-ALL OF POINTLESS LINKS! I'm only suggesting this to be done in instances where it makes sense and makes copy more informative!
I know a lot of kinks would have to be worked out (like making sure people are giving and not just taking) but I wanted to throw the general idea out there first to see if it's even a good idea.

Honestly, I think this kind of thing happens fairly often. The one paid link Google will never catch is the one that we agree to at the bar at the end of the day at SES/SMX/Pubcon/Mozcon/etc. On a less manipulative level than paid links, the best exchanged links come from relationship-building. If there's a site that's relevant to your site and where a link would benefit the users, reaching out to that site is just good, white-hat link-building, IMO.
I guess the problem comes in when you try to systematize it. Practically speaking, you end up with a lot of people looking for low-hanging fruit and submitting junk. Plus, as soon as you build a link network (no matter how good your intentions), you have to market it - once you market it, it's bound to get on Google's radar.
I think there are sites that skirt the edge of this, but it's tough. MyBlogGuest is a great example - it's a marketplace for guest bloggers, and often people guest blog for traffic/links. The site is just setting up that exchange and relationship, though - it's not directly driving link purchases or exchanges.

Yeah, you may be right. I guess there's not really a way to do it that doesn't make it like an indirect link network, huh?

I have a coworker who branded our reciprocal pages as "unethical" because we were "cheating" Google somehow.
That having been said...
The problem with this is that its a TON of work to run a link network. Even if we were all above board, what would the end value be? And what happens when Google's insert cute animal here update hits and knocks it all down? I honestly don't see any way for this to work in a long term because, as Mark noted, Google is trying to knock these sorts of things down.

Yeah, I agree that it could get out of hand and I see how it could be interpreted as creating the largest link network the world has ever seen, which is certainly not my intent. Like I said, it would only be in places where it actually made sense. But I also see how it's a dumb idea. I'm just looking for opinions at this point or suggestions on how to make it actually work in a legit way. I value the input you gave, and appreciate your not jumping all over it and accusing me of being a black-hat spammer.

Hi Marisa,
It sounds like you're advocating for all of us members to get organized and create the largest link network the world has ever seen (mwahahaha). While there is some logic to it, I really think this is exactly the type of stuff that Google is going after. In the end, what it would come down to is the user. By your linking from your site to the coat hanger site, are you benefiting your user? Is the link in context and does it make sense? If someone was genuinely interested in reading your article, would following your link help them? If so, by all means do it. I don't think Google will penalize people for naturally linking to friends, business partners, associates, local businesses, etc. But what happens when this becomes organized, and your DIY furniture blog starts linking to forex sites and cheap online prescriptions? While that is clearly an exaggeration, I see it as only a matter of time before things would deteriorate. While you should by all means be building relationships and establishing connections and then leveraging those connections for all purposes, including link equity, you need to keep your user in mind in the end and be focused on them.
That being said, I'm all for contextual outbound links to relevant sites - let's all spread the link love a bit more!

Does this link building actually work?
Doing a small SEO project for a local dermatologist and when reviewing competitor link profiles I found one site that was earning a TON of links from other doctors throughout the country. From what I can tell, it looks like this web development company builds medical practice sites, then puts a page on each site that links to all other practices they created site for. Does this actually work? What would the name of this be? Recipricol links? Link farm? http://www.raleighsportsmed.com/ypo-showcase.php Thanks! Ricky

Questions About Link Building .
Hello Moz Community, I am about to hire a SEO firm for my website ranking. I have few questions about their link building plan. http://priceperlink.com/SEO-Link-Building/ Their link building plan ! I have purchased package 4. I have noticed they will use same article and PR again and again . Is that acceptable ? This plan is not authenticated to me. I hope google will catch me for duplicate content. Anyone can clear it please ? Another question is , If i provide unique articles , will that plan be helpful ? Still i have confusion. As I read few days ago, google don't give any value to article submission and press release distribution without any news ! So, help me quickly and suggestion as well. Will i continue with them or not. Thanks

Link building for a non-linkable site?
Hello, I am trying to zone in on a link building strategy for a non-linkable site. What I mean by non-linkable is I have a construction site. It's a family owned and operated small business. Our clients are farmers and older people usually. We go do a job, do it right the first time, and leave. Basically even if a couple of people who link to me for some weird reason, this is no way in the realm of 6,000 that my main competition has. I have tried to get as many quality citation resources as possible by using get listed, and white spark. My domain authority is only 16 though, so I must be able to increase this somehow. I have listed with Google +, Bing, Yahoo and every other major citation I could find. So now with trying too increase links with other ideas. I read somewhere to donate to charitable organizations, but if they link back to me as a donor, in an unrelated field, isn't that spammy like? So a construction site donating to a disease website, and then getting a backlink in return, does that look weird. It just seems like there are so many rules that I do not want to mess something up. I do not want get spammy links, but not sure if citations count as links so I am doing a win-win thing? Thanks for any tips Chris

What is the best white hat seo link building strategy?
My goal is to build links that comply with Google's Quality Guidelines. I am wondering what is the best way to approach webmasters or bloggers about submitting guest posts or writing content. I have done a competitive analysis, and have a list of potential link sources, but I am not sure what approach to take next. Any advice or strategy would be appreciated.

Link Building & Moz metrices
I am just starting up so no flaming please. Okay so i was given a project and i was amused to see a lot of backlinks to the website with viagra pills title. This is why i assume the domain authority is very low. I tried asking a few website owners to drop the links but they said its a lot of manual work they wont do it(that was shocking) So what next? Would building authority links in any domains help me in this case?

How long for SEOMoz to reflect new inbound links?
I have carried out some minor link building for my new site (site A) and have some links back from several directories and 1 from ezine and one from squidoo as well as a few partner sites and such. I also have another site (site B) which was linking to site A several times from a footer link, this has now been amended to just one link. The problem is that SEOmoz still only shows 3 linking domains to site A (there are at least 12 if you perform a manual search) and it is still showing many links from site B even though there is now only one. All these changes where made at least 3 weeks ago, how long before Seomoz picks them up.

What percentage of my links should be directory links
I feel a lot of my link building might be a bit heavy on the directory links side. Should I limit the percentage amount of links as a part of my overall link profile? If yes what percentage of links is ok to be directory links?
