Organic Rank Volitility
-
Does anyone else see their organic rankings fluctuating wildly. I have been tracking a few key keywords by literaly typing them in each morning and looking at results.
The pages I have been doing this for where without any doubt affected by Penguin as you can see the huge drop in traffic directly correlated to the Pegnuin deployment.
What is strange is one day these phrases will be on page one position 3 and two days later but on page3 to 5 or not ranked. Four days later back on page 1. These are wild fluctuations so it appears to me that I am observing Penguin tweaking ? Just wish the tweaking would stop on one of the days were our phases for this particular site are on page one.
Most people would check rankings weekly, monthly or quarter and would not perhaps be observing these crazy swings?
Thought?

John,
Believe me - we all understand how frustrating it can be, and how difficult it can be to go with the patience path. So I totally feel your pain!

Thanks for the thoughts. I get it. Anyone doing SEO on a site can only read and react with what is deemed appropriate and prudent changes.
I resubmitted a few key pages and was seeing if there was a quick reaction. I have never done this before and just thought it was strange and wondered if anyone had an explanation. I will go back to waiting for Moz to crawl and send me my campaigns reports.
Thanks to you both for the input. I am just very frustrated. We never received any warning from Google about link farms. Have really not done any back-linking in 5 or 6 years, have never been hit by any algorithmic change till now. While I figured one day it might happen it does not make it any less frustrating.
I realize I am too far down in the details those that say on here to just wait are nuts. Obviously some action is required or we would not have been knocked down.

Also be aware that it's a waste of time to frequently check to see if what you've done has helped you recover from Penguin. Penguin hit sites will ONLY see improvements if they have made the right changes, however that will only be reflected when Google actually refreshes the Penguin algorithm, and so far nobody has been able to report that a Penguin update has even happened yet.
Micromanagement of SEO is a death-knell. Do what you believe to be the right thing for the right reasons, and breathe....

I'd add to EGOL's response by offering this. Anyone who obsesses with checking rankings every day will miss bigger picture, longer-term trends. Every single day not only is Google testing, but there are countless other changes happening on the web to at least temporarily impact many results. Other sites in the same niche, news content, social media buzz, other SEOs working in the same niche... it all can impact short term results.
The other factor is if you're checking results while logged in to Google, and/or not using the &PWS=0 method for checking non-personalized results, because Google ALWAYS alters personalized results to one extent or another, and every search you do, further impacts ever next search. This is especially made worse because they're always wanting to algorithmically provide a variety of results, in the notion that if they do so, they may eventually give you something you'll click on and not return to search for.

I will take a look. I have never monitored rankings this closely before but we are making on-page changes and resubmitting in webmaster to try in help with the huge hit from Penguin.
So many opinions on things to do / change out there it is hard to know what to do but I figured a complete re-visit of key page on-page for all the product category pages was the first step.
So much is written about SEO but so little of it covers the unique issue that you have if you are doing e-commerce seo....for example if I have a category page and display 50 products per page on that category and 40 of the product have the keyword of the page in the product name. There is no way to really reduce the stuffing. The irony is I could reduce the stuffing but it would make the site less effective/ appropriate for the end user of the site.
If the on-page changed do not help I guess we will turn attention to getting more good backlinks to offset the non-sense site that have backlink to us for no good reason.
Back-links - I could rail for hours about this topic.

If you read the book: In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives by Steven Levy (recommended reading for any SEO) you will learn how many people get "test SERPs".
Google does a lot of testing and I believe that they have been especially active at testing recently.

We are ranking for unexpected industry keywords; not for the main keywords. What might be wrong?
Hi all, Our company falls into a SaaS industry LIKE seo. We used to rank for our industry keywords just like seo, seo software, etc... We have fallen out of rankings for these obvious top keywords with high search volume, but ranking for these 2 keywords like seo homepage and seo website. I think we have some strong ranking authority at Google by ranking for our industry keywords "homepage" and "website" which represents a very relevant site to the industry. But not sure why we are not ranking for top keywords. Any thoughts on this?

Dates appear before home page description in the SERPs- HUGE drop in rankings
We have been on the first page of Google for a number of years for search terms including 'SEO Agency', 'SEO Agency London' etc. A few months ago we made some changes to the design of the home page (added a blog feed), and made changes to the website sitemap. Two days ago (two months after last site changes were made) we dropped subsantially in the SERPs for all home page keywords. Where we are found, a date appears before the description in the SERPs, dating February 2012 (which is when we launched the original website). The site has been through a revamp since then, yet it still shows 2012. This has been followed by a few additional strange things, including the sitelinks that Google is choosing to show (which including author bio pages showing in homepage site links), and googling our brand name no longer brings up sitelinks in the SERPs. The problem only affects the home page. All other pages are performing as standard. When Penguin 4.0 came out we saw a noted improvement in our SERP performance, and our backlinks are good and quality, largely from PR efforts. Of course, I would be interested in additional pairs of eyes on the back links to see if anyone thinks that I have missed anything! We have 3 of our senior SEOs working on trying to figure out what is going on and how to resolve it, but I would be very interested if anyone has any thoughts?

Number of Items As a Google Ranking Factor??
If I search for "hiking boots" and scan down the SERPs I see the following... Google reports "483 items" for the Zappos.com page. Google reports "Results 1 - 36 of 85" for the Shoebuy.com page (and that does not appear in their code). So, Google is obviously paying attention to the depth of your information or the number of items that you are showing. If they think that is important enough to count and report in the SERPs, might they also be using that information as a ranking factor?? PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOR SEO: If google is using this information, perhaps people should list all of their color, size, etc variants on a single page. For example if you sell widgets in five colors, instead of making one page for each color, list all five on the same page.

Google.uk rankings plummet, .com improves. What to do?
Hey Guys, Seems so much has changed with international SEO I'm not sure what to do with our site. We have a huge site with many country level landing pages that perform very well on google.com searches (IE; keyword + Jamaica) etc. We are not using a .co.uk version of our site and now our rankings have plummeted in the UK. Should we just make a .co.uk with similar (or the exact same content) or is there some newer strategy to follow?

When did Google include display results per page into their ranking algorithm?
It looks like the change took place approx. 1-2 weeks ago. Example: A search for "business credit cards" with search settings at "never show instant results" and "50 results per page", the SERP has a total of 5 different domains in the top 10 (4 domains have multiple results). With the slider set at "10 results per page", there are 9 different domains with only 1 having multiple results. I haven't seen any mention of this change, did I just miss it? Are they becoming that blatant about forcing as many page views as possible for the sake of serving more ads?

How could Penguin kill my top ten rank and promote this garbage page to a #5 spot
Hey, Before penguin, I had a #9 rank for the term "yoga poses". So as many of us are doing, I started looking at my link profile... and yes, there were around 300 links from an old yoga news website (anchor: yoga poses)... that lead to the page on my site optimized for this term. The problem is they took the site down, but not properly... I.E. they generate a "not available" message for browsers, but underneath, I guess the bots can still index all the pages... so I guess they were interpreting these links as coming from a cloaked site. So, I was able to get them to remove the links... webmaster tools reports half of them gone now. What I don't get though... is how Google can give this garbage page a #5 spot for a competitive term like "yoga poses"... Check out http://www.ebmyoga.com/beginyoga.html and compare it to my page... http://www.yogaclassplan.com/yoga-poses/ This page leads to highly quality 100% unique yoga pose articles... in my mind we deliver so much more value than the site with a #5 rank. I don't understand. Any insight? Thanks,

Re-direct domain ranking higher than main domain 6 months later
Hello, I have a question regarding a couple of our in-house domains & rankings. We have our main site which we've had for 3+ years, moderately optimised. And our separate site for another publication, this was it's own stand-alone site but now that site has been removed off our servers & the old domain a straight forward http re-direct via 1&1 to the main website. The old site was removed & forward set up before October 2011, however when searching Google for 'specification online' the old domain appears position #1. We have many other domains which are http re-directs with 1&1 and none of these have causes us this issue. What else can I do to get the old domain to stop showing up on Google? Domains in questions: Main site: http://specificationonline.co.uk Old site: http://housingspecification.com If you need any further info I'll be happy to provide as we owned both domains & hosting from day 1 so can access anything required.

Can AJAX implementation affect the rankings in Google Panda?
Hi there, I have the following situation with one of our job sites. We migrate the site to a new application, which is better from design point of view and also usability. For this we use a lot AJAX especially in searches. So every time a user is filtering down their search new results will be shown on the page, at the same url and with no page load. But, having this implementation. affected Bounce rate - which increased from 38% to nearly 60%, PI/visits - which are now half, at 3 and also Avg Time on Site is half that is used to be coming to 2,5 min from nearly 6 min. From Rand post, it is clearly that the content is very important in Google Panda, and all of these parameters we should consider, as it is telling the quality of the content. So, my question will be, can this site be hit by Panda updates (maybe later on) because Bounce Rate, PI/Visits and Avg Time on site, decreased in such way? At the moment we don't measure the Ajax impresion, but as I understood that we can do that though virtual pages in GA, does anyone of you have the experience how to handle this? Won't be this an artificial increase? Thanks, Irina
