Article on site and distribution, is it duplicate content?
-
I was always taught to place all original articles on site, let them get indexed by Google, then put out for distribution through various press release outlets.
With the latest penguin update, how does this practice work out concerning duplicate content? In theory, I wrote the article so I should get credit for it on my site first, then push through various distribution outlets to get it out to my targeted audience in my niche field.
Typing out loud I would tend to think if the article is on my site first then I would get credit and any others following would be hit by duplicate content if in fact google considered it a dupe violation.
Any input on this? Am I on track or am I heading for a train wreck.

To be honest, I don't get why to do that.
I'd get the best article on my site, rewrite it (not spinning) and publish the simpler rewritten version.
I believe that also the rewritten version shouldn't be used more than a couple of times. I think that the best practice would be to have the distributed articles point out to your on site article as the source of information but don't do too many of these.
Coppied content of any type today is not healthy.

Syndicating content is generally not a problem, if you have a site with decent site authority and you are publishing articles on your site first, like you say. 2 things that will help Google sort out the original article:
- If you have control over the code on the sites you are syndicating to, add a rel=canonical back to your own site
- Include links in your syndicated articles pointing back to the original article on your own site. This will help Google determine which was the original, as well as get you some link juice
Hope that helps.

If a domain with higher authority publishes the article, they will likely outrank you for your own content.
To be safe, you have to ask yourself this questions:
If you a re putting the same piece of information on multiple sites, what value does it add to the end user?
The goal of the last update according to Google is to have people create content for the sake of the end user, and not search engines. From that perspective, if you are doing this for the sake of rankings, it might not be a good idea. If it doesn't hurt you now, it might hurt you later.
The best way to do it would be to choose at most 2-3 very reputable press release sites and publish there with a link back to your press release page.

Content in Tabs
I speed read an article recently and forgot to save it regarding Contents on a page in tabs. Is it correct that now Google is rendering the entire page it's better not to have content in tabs hidden by Javascript? As it stands at the moment, we've got the tabs set-up so that the main part of the page containing the keyword rich text is in a tab and not the first thing presented to the user

tagged as duplicate content?
Hello folks, I'm new to SEOmoz . I was looking at our Crawl Diagnostics and found that some of our blog posts that have been commented on were tagged as duplicate content. For example: http://thankyouregistry.com/blog/remarriages-and-gift-registries/ http://thankyouregistry.com/blog/remarriages-and-gift-registries/comment-page-1/ I'm unsure how to fix these, so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Copyscape Duplicate Content Ownership Question
We have a site that has had its content copied verbatim to numerous other sites and articles. We were advised to change our content but the content is originally ours. Does google take that into account before they apply duplicate penalties? And shouldn't copyscape be able to show this information in their reports? It just doesnt seem right that the originating author would have to change content because everyone else is stealing it. Any clarification on this?

What content is apropriate here
Hello, I've got a dozen good articles in my article section, but nobody is landing on them. Should we write articles about our products? Won't that compete with our product pages?

Duplicate content issue with dynamically generated url
Hi, For those who have followed my previous question, I have a similar one regarding dynamically generated urls. From this page http://www.selectcaribbean.com/listing.html the user can make a selection according to various criteria. 6 results are presented and then the user can go to the next page. I know I should probably rewrite url's such as these: http://www.selectcaribbean.com/listing.html?pageNo=1&selType=&selCity=&selPrice=&selBeds=&selTrad=&selMod=&selOcean= but since all the results presented are basically generated on the fly for the convenience of the user, I am afraid google my consider this as an attempt to generate more pages as there are pages for each individual listing. What is my solution for this? Nofollow these pages? Block them thru robots txt?
