Microdata / Schema.org and HTTPS

I have a quick question regarding Microdata / Schema.org files that are not hosted on secure connections.
I receive a receive a security error from my e-commerce site because the code references the schema over HTTP instead of HTTPS.<div< span="">itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Product"></div<>This is not the first time I have run into this issue. We also use MRSS schema for an RSS feed from yahoo and the same thing happens.<div< span="">xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss"></div<>The problem mainly lies in the fact that these schemas are not hosted over HTTPS. If you add HTTPS to the beginning of both you will get a security error.Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this or similar issue and what the "best practices" are around this?Is it ok to obtain the schema directly and then host it on our server, over our secure connection?Thanks!

Hey Anthony,
I would suggest that this is just as applicable to Author or Organisation and really, I would not even be looking to index these secure pages & I would only use Author on a specific piece of content and organisation on a contact page or some such page about the business.
I have to say I am no expert on Schema but it was my understanding that the idea is to mark up individual pages to provide additional relevance. That is, your whole site does not contain microdata about the organisation and as such you would not want to display such a snippet of information. Likewise, your shopping cart is not published by a specific author.
Disclaimer, I am no expert here but will be interesting to see what other's have to say.

Thanks for the response. This is a definitely work around, but for Products / Offers only.
This doesn't help when applying Microdata / Schema to "global" site specific parameters, such as Author or Organization.(http://schema.org/Organization)Any one have any ideas of how this should be handled on a global level that doesn't involve turning the Microdata On / Off?

Hey Anthony, not sure about the self hosting thing, but if this specific schema is for the product pages, do you need to reference these on the non https version of your site (the product catalogue etc?)
So, use the products, reviews etc schema and reference them where needed and then drop the reference on all other pages where they are not needed and especially on the checkout pages where you are taking the user onto a secure connection.
If you take a look at some big players, play.com as an example, they use this approach.

Rankings drop after https migration [Need urgent help]
hey hi guys, i have lost all my organic traffic and in need of urgent help. Plz i need all your SEO expertise. My website is: makemoneyadultcontent.com (before judging me, let me tell you that i have been in adult industry for almost 7 years now and hence this blog was a way to pass my knowledge to everyone who is looking for it) Recently i saw that moving to HTTPS will benefit my site. I did not knew much about technical details of moving to https. My hosting was on siteground, and they have a button which you can press and your website will then be served through https. So i did that. Nothing else was done. this was done on 13th or 14th of june For the next few weeks here is my analytics (image attached) : As you can see the traffic fluctuated and finally i lost everything on 29th june. When i researched more, i found out that you need to follow many steps in order to move to HTTPS. So i followed this guide and completed all the steps: https://www.keycdn.com/blog/http-to-https/ (also checked many other guides and tried to complete all the steps mentioned) Everyone said that the rankings will recover in one week, but now it has been more than 17 days and still the rankings have not improved. My articles are indexed as i can see it using site:makemoneyadultcontent.com but none of them are ranking for the keywords that i was ranking earlier. i have submitted the sitemap in google webmaster and around 166 (out of 218) pages are indexed. How does linkedin get grey microdata when searching a persons name?
If you google any persons name who has a linkedin profile and then locate that entry in the search engine results (linkedin profiles are usually first page for most people) you will see that they get microdata indexed which is basically the persons location and headline from their profile. Looking at their markup, i see location which makes sense as it is an hcard format, but I do not see any microformat data around the headline. Any ideas how they get this? wDQcGZY

Should we add Schema.org for Website Articles on our blog page
Hi All, We use schema.org on most of our eCommerce website apart from on our "latest news/blog section" which we have all our how to's ...and other useful articles on . Am I missing a trick here ?.. I have found there is a https://schema.org/Article which I guess we could implement if it's a big help or if there's a better one ? Schema.org on Product Page showing strange result if you post url in google
Hi All, We have implemented Schema.org for our products and currently if you put the url in google, the results showing up are not the meta description but some of the schema.org content along with some other rubbish at the bottom . Automotive part / OEM / Manufacturer numbers
Hi All, What's the best way to optimise pages for OE / Manufacturer Part numbers? Disclaimer: All part numbers in this post are fictional. I dont want this post out ranking my client for real part numbers 🙂 Take this for Throttle Body for example: WOODYS S-AB-Q.123.53G This is the main part number from WOODYS (the manufacturer). However, these are all variations of exactly the same product: Woodys 2.78972.11.0 Woodys 2.78972.16.0 Woodys 2.78972.20.0 Woodys 2.78972.26.0 Oh, and car brands use OE numbers for these parts, such as: VWA 9808e40923G VWA 9808e40923L VWA 9808e40923M VWA 9808e40923P VWA 9808e40923Q These internal part numbers are vitally important as most of my clients customers are garages/mechanics so they're very likely to search on OE numbers. So, would you suggest: Optimising 10 different pages for the same product (using the part numbers in the URL, Title and H1). The problem is there's no unique content for these pages, only the part number varies, so this would likely get penalised for dupe content, or not enough unique content. Optimising one page for all terms. If so, how do you suggest doing this to ensure all part/OE numbers rank well and part numbers are prominent in the SERPS?

Could Schema.org help here by marking up these EO numbers with the isSimilarTo property of the Product type? I'm trying to ensure these part number get equal presence in the SERP snippet when searched for, even though I can't physically include all these numbers in the Title tag, URL and H1 of one page. 3. Schema.org on Youtube iframe embed?
So I've tried scouring the internet on the proper way to markup youtube videos. How was cdn.seomoz.org configured?
The SEOmoz CDN appears to have a "pull zone" that is set to the root of the domain, such that any static file can be addressed from either subdomain: http://www.seomoz.org/q/moz_nav_assets/images/logo.png http://cdn.seomoz.org/q/moz_nav_assets/images/logo.png The risk of this configuration is that web pages (not just images/CSS/JS) also get cached and served by the CDN. I won't put the URL here for fear of Google indexing it, but if you replace the 'www' in the URL below with 'cdn', you'll see a cached copy of the original: http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/the-greatest-attribution-ever-graphed The worst-case scenario is that the homepage gets indexed. But this doesn't happen here: http://cdn.seomoz.org/ That URL issues a 301 redirect back to the canonical www subdomain. As it should. Here's my question: how was that done? Because maxcdn.com can't do it. If you set a "pull zone" to your entire domain, they'll cache your homepage and everything else. googlebot has a field day with that; it will reindex your entire site off the CDN. Maybe the SEOmoz CDN provider (CloudFront) allows specific URLs to be blocked? Or do you detect the CloudFront IPs and serve them a 301 (which they'd proxy out to anyone requesting cdn.seomoz.org)? One solution is to create a pull zone that points to a folder, like example.com/images... but this doesn't help a complex site that has cacheable content in multiple places (do you Wordpress users really store ALL your static content under /wp-content/ ?). Or, as suggested above, dynamically detect requests from the CDN's proxy servers, and give them a 301 for any HTML-page request. This gets complex quickly, and is both prone to breakage and very difficult to regression-test. Properly retrofitting a complex site to use a CDN, without creating a half-dozen new CDN subdomains, does not appear to be easy.
