Onpage Optimisation
-
Hi Guys,
Has anyone noticed that the onpage rules seem to have changed in terms of what Google is looking for.
I have just been optimizing a client site, I haven't worked on for a year and noticed that the pages I have worked on have dropped since lat week when I finished the onpage. Some of them aren't just 1 or 2 places but literally pages. It can't be links as I haven't even started link building yet. These are the same rules i have been playing with for six years and I don't cut corners with rogue text, or overly optimize for keywords.
I am going to give it till the end of the month and then reverse the changes be interesting to see what happens.
Kind Regards
Neil

Yeah! just ran another report and now they have all changed again!!. Definitely reckon its having a dance!!
-
Ha, for an industry that publishes so much information, the basics have not really changed at all.
-
Looks like the "Google Dance" it's now 78th.
Thank you Marcus, thought I was going to have relearn everything!!!
-
Hey Neil, changes are never that huge and dramatic and to be blunt, things are pretty much the same on page (give or take) that they were 12 years ago when I first started this game.
It's possible you may have another problem here - do you know what the client has been doing for the last 18 months? Any link building? Is there any thin or duplicated content?
This could be a rough gig as the client will want to hang this on you but it could be something else entirely.

Should I utilize URL re-writes to include keywords and other optimised page elements on my website?
Hi there, I am working on a medical recruitment website: https://wave.com.au/ I have noticed that our Job Search and Job Listings section of the website is lacking a little bit in terms of SEO optimisation. For example, at the moment this is our search page (with locum work type selected): https://wave.com.au/search-locum/results If you add a location, for example, NSW and then click search again, it updates the URL to: https://wave.com.au/search-locum/results?LocumSearchForm_Location[]=NSW&action_doSearch=Search+jobs I did a check what some competitors and leaders in the recruitment industry were doing and I came across: https://www.ochrerecruitment.com.au/jobs/anaesthetics/new-south-wales/locum/ If you click the different filters/options, it updates the URL to include more clearly defined categories. Some websites would even have a H1 heading tag that would update based on the filters/options you selected. Should I set up a set of URL re-writes and re-structure my website a little bit so that dynamic URLs change to static etc.? Does anyone have any best practice knowledge in regards to this? I have been referencing the following article: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/dynamic-urls-vs-static-urls-the-best-practice-for-seo-is-still-clear

*** Please HELP *** A/B tests and optimisation implications
Hi Mozzers, We've been A-B testing landing pages, and have had some success. The changes we've been making have been quite radical in some instances - for example we tested this page: https://www.turnkeymortgages.co.uk/todays-mortgage-deals/ against this one: https://www.turnkeymortgages.co.uk/mortgage-quote/ (Today's best deals won, but we've decided to keep the quote page as it does work for some channels). The decision was made to try and optimise Today's best deals for 'best mortgage deals today' rather than 'mortgage quote' because it offers so much more than simply a quote. The quote page is optimised for 'mortgage quote', though it doesn't rank particularly well (I'm not overly concerned by this as even though you'd think that when people are looking for a quote that they would fill in the form, they don't - people are strange!) As a result of the change above we changed all links that originally went to the quote page to go to Today's best deals instead. As we go through the process of optimising for best conversion will it be damaging if we don't change the url as well. As I can see lots of iterations and lots of work whenever we make changes to the pages (going through the entire site to change the links). I am worried though that we'll end up with hundreds of landing pages and changing links all over the site - do you think we should keep the URLs the same from now on, unless the content changes as radically as it did in the instance I've highlighted above? Thanks, Amelia

Too many onpage links
We got the weekly seomoz reports and see that most of our pages and posts contain too many onpage links. I checked our website and all of our pages have a header, footer and left side menu. I did the math and there are 13 links in the header, 26 links in the footer and 76 links in the left side menu. This means that all of our post and pages have 115 links at the start. So what do I do? Do I remove the left side menu from the posts' layout and use only the footer and header? Or do I add nofollow links? Thanks!

What is the best way to optimise a site that wants to target one service in multiple locations?
Hello! I would like to get some opinions about the best way to optimise a site/pages/URL's for a client that offers one service in multiple locations. The client has done work in various areas of the UK and wants to be found for these locations. They don't have addresses in these locations. What would be the best way to set up the pages/URLs for each location? Is there any reason why I can't have, for example, a main Portfolio page which has content about the service and a link to each portfolio in the different locations, e.g. /portfolio/london, /portfolio/hampstead, portfolio/kensington. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks Kerry

Post Pinguin Onpage Optimisation - How Do I Build the Perfectly Optimized Page?
Hello, So far I always follow the recomendations of the chocolate donuts example of Rand Fishkin on the Blogpost: How Do I Build the Perfectly Optimized Page? I also think that the onpage grades follow this rules. Do you think this is still all true after pinguin? Personally none of my websites have been afected by the update and I have an A grade on all my landing page. What do you think about the image alt text. Is it still a good idea to use the keyword? Are there any newer resources here on SEOMOZ (I didn't find any with my search)? Thanks for sharing your experiences.. Regards

How to force a refresh after on-page optimisation update
After updating areas highlighted in the On-Page Optimization report even after clicking the [Grade My On-page Optimization] the results don't refresh or reflect the changes eg The h1 tag does include the exact search term and there is bolded examples of the keyword phrase but report says not! Is there a way to force an update or is it a time related issue?
