Redirect everything from a certain url
-
I have a new domain (www.newdomain.com) and and an old domain (www.olddomain.com).
Currently both domains are pointing (via dns nameserves) at the new site. I want to 301 everything that comes from the www.oldsite.com to www.newsite.com.
I've used this htaccess code
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.newsite.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]Which works fine and redirects if someone visits www.olddomain.com but I want it to cover everything from the old domain such as www.olddomain.com/archives/article1/ etc. So if any subpages etc are visited from the old domain its redirected to the new domain.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to send individual pages to the corresponding new ones on the new site.
But a really crude way to just point an entire old domain at a new one is to use "domain forwarding" - you'll set this up with whoever you manage the domain name with.
-
So which part shouldI remove - the RewriteCond or/and RewriteRule?
Thanks
-
Thanks, you are indeed right however in this case I need to redirect the old domain and all of its pages to the home page of the new.
I just need to know how to say if anything from www.olddomain.com INCLUDING sub pages and folders hits my site then redirect it to www.newsite.com. Both domain names are pointing at the same hosting.
Can anyone help?

Hi James, a question, do you want all the old pages simply to redirect to the new "home page" or do you have new versions of the old pages on your new domain? While I lack the detailed programming knowledge of Naghirniac; it seems to me that you should have a think about whether you want visitors who land on the old site's blue widget's page (assuming there is any traffic or link juice flowing in) to be redirected to a new version of blue widgets page on the new domain; rather than just a blanket transfer to the home page? If that's the case and you aren't talking thousands of pages then maybe redirects from each page would be worth thinking about?
Good luck anyhow!

Leave only the
RedirectMatch permanent /.* http://www.newdomain.com/take out the other part
-
Thanks tired that but I just get a error saying
This webpage has a redirect loop
-
You can use like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.newsite.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]RedirectMatch permanent /.* http://www.newdomain.com/
-
Ok, how would I fit that into the above htacess code?
Thanks

Hi James,
I made some research, and there is several solutions, some depends on your Apache version. Try the rule above to see if it solve your problem:
RedirectMatch permanent /.* http://www.newdomain.com/
If not, you should take a look at http://stackoverflow.com/ The website has a lot of discussion on this theme.

After you remove a 301 redirect that Google has processed, will the new URL retain any of the link equity from the old URL?
Lets say you 301 redirect URL A to URL B, and URL A has some backlinks from other sites. Say you left the 301 redirect in place for a year, and Google had already replaced the old URL with the new URL in the SERPs, would the new URL (B) retain some of the link equity from URL A after the 301 redirect was removed, or does the redirect have to remain in place forever?

Redirect Chain Issue
I keep running into a redirect chain issue trying to get a non-https/non-www domain to forward directly to the https/www domain on an Apache server. For background, we are forcing https and forcing www, but it appears the non-https/non-www domain is first redirecting to https/non-www and then redirecting again to the desired final https/www version of the domain. (Hope I am making sense here) I am trying to find code to add to my .htaccess file that will perform the following... 301 Redirect

Updating content on URL or new URL
High Mozzers, We are an event organisation. Every year we produce like 350 events. All the events are on our website. A lot of these events are held every year. So i have an URL like www.domainname.nl/eventname So what would you do. This URL has some inbound links, some social mentions and so on. SO if the event will be held again in 2013. Would it be better to update the content on this URL or create a new one. I would keep this URL and update it because of the linkvalue and it is allready indexed and ranking for the desired keyword for that event. Cheers, Ruud

Domain redirect seo
Hello, my domain www.pacomarca.com and when i start the new campaing i get this pronblem: We have detected that the domain www.pacomarca.com and the domain pacomarca.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here. my domain is in networksolutions.com. how can i resolve it? many thanks Gonzalo

301 Redirect
The SEOmoz crawl campaign found some 404 errors in my Joomla site poker-brands.ca. So, I figured I would set up 301 redirects in my hosting account to make sure bots don't read that there is a page missing. For example: This link gave a 404 error in the crawl: http://www.poker-brands.ca/download-pokertracker-software/holdemmanager I redirected it to: http://www.poker-brands.ca/download-pt3-pokertracker-software/holdemmanager-hem-hm2 However, when I visit the first link it doesn't send me to the second link. Am I supposed to get forwarded to the second link now?

Blank Canonical URL
So my devs have the canonical URL loaded up on pages automatically, and in most cases this gets done correctly. However we ran across a bug that left some of these blank like so: Does anyone know what effect that would have? I am trying to provide a priority for this so I can say "FIX IT NOW" or "Fix it after the other 'FIX IT NOW' type of items". Let me know if you have any ideas. I just want to be sure I am not telling google that all of these pages are like the home page. Thanks!
