Image sliders & site speed
-
We are having a new website designed using WordPress and the Genesis framework. We wanted to include header image sliders on a number of internal site pages, but our designer says that sliders on more than just the home page will slow down the site significantly. How much could they slow down the site, and what can be done to minimize their effect on site speed?

Yes, there is some truth in what your designer says, adding any additional images and media to a page will slow the load time, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.
My advice to you would be this, if adding a slider to an internal page enhances the user experience (UX) then add it to the page, a well optimised image slider will not impact the load time of a page noticeably to a user.
Once your site is designed, you may want to consider running it through the Google PageSpeed tool, the tool will score your page and generate suggestions to help you make your page faster

A slider will only impact the page it is on. Adding a slider to the page will slow down that page (as does adding anything), but there is no reason that one of a sub-page would have more impact on speed than one on a home page.
However listen to what the designer is really saying. It might be that they are using load time as a polite way of saying "back off with the sliders". Slider do create an overhead both in terms of load time and in terms of drawing the eye and therefore detracting from other content on the page. They are powerful when used correctly, but can impact on overall effectiveness of the site when used badly.
I'd actually start off asking "If load time wasn't an issue would you use a slider on that page" and see what they say. Presumably you hired them because you think they're good, so see what they say.
If they say yes then ask how much overhead it would add if the images are well optimised, you choose a lightweight slider script and minify everything (because the answer is usually "not much").

Mergers & Acquisitions - Website Transition Good practice
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has come across good practice for maintaining websites after a merger or acquisition where there needs to be an association between two websites of the two companies involved. For an acquisition, I'm considering moving the acquired company to a sub domain of the parent company e.g. aquiredcompany.parentcompany.com. On both websites there wmay be a prominant popup so visitors can switch between the websites if they have visited the incorrect one. One worry I have is the acquired company has some good rankings, which I want to keep. I will of course manage the process through 301 redirects. But I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this approach or can suggest any better solutions. Thanks in advance, Stuart

Responsive Site has "Not Found" Errors for mobile/ and m/ in Google Search Console
We have recently launched a new responsive website for a client and have noticed 2 "Not Found" errors within Google Search Console for /mobile and /m Both these URLs are not linked from anywhere within the site. However Google is reporting them as being linked from the homepage. This is not the first site we have seen in which Google has reported this error, however the other site was not a mobile friendly site. My thoughts are to 301 them back to the Homepage. Anybody else have any thoughts on this? or have recently received the same errors?

Old Speed Reports
Hey all,
Web Design | | SEOSponge
We just moved our website to WordPress and trying to compare the new reports we are receiving for page speed/user experience to the old ones. Looking at dates before the relaunch, it looks as if old site speed reports are unavailable? Does anyone know of a way to recover older reports? We want to compare the responsive site/new desktop version to the old one (end users would have to "pinch" the screen to look at content on old site). Thanks in advance if you have any info!!!!0 -
Why aren't Images in G+ product page posts showing up in SERPs for brand searches?
Before 1-2 weeks ago, our G+ posts containing links to our product pages would show up in in SERPs (when searching for our brand name) with a thumbnail of the product image. Now, they do not (see image below for visual). Our tech team confirmed there hasn't been any coding change that might be to blame and I see that this isn't happening to other sites. Any idea what may be the problem here? tcnhLgy

Build New Site Without Losing Rankings
Good morning SEOmoz community. I have a question which I am pretty sure I already know the answer to, however i thought I would reach out to my fellow experts to see if anyone had some great advice. I would really like to give my website a makeover. i have two thoughts on this, one is to scrap the site completely and start fresh, the other would be to only change it visually, but keep all the content and on-page optimization. I am terrified of losing my rankings. I am ranked position 1 and 2 for highly competitive terms and have another 15 - 20 keywords on page 1. Any advice would be tremendously appreciated!!!
