Press Releases as Backlinking
-
After analyzing one of my competitors I notices they show up in PRweb as one of their top rated back linking sites.
My question is using prweb or something similar okay to use for backlinking? Would they help at all?
Also, since they distribute content, would I get penalized for duplicate content?

When I moved across country I used this one to let people know that I had moved my consulting business:
They did a good job. I even got picked up in a few local print newspapers.

What free ones would you recommend?

Thanks guys! All of these are really valuable information. So I think I will add this as part of my link building portfolio. Thanks!

I've found that PRWeb is great for news releases but a lot of the links aren't too high of quality. I have a bulk subscription and the releases are picked up by the same places EVERY time though we input different media outlets and cities. You can definitely talk them down on the price if you want to do a bulk subscription.

I've used PR Web with success for several clients.
Each release is typically linked to by around 100 sites, but these are typically no follow.
The real value comes from the link from PR Web's site itself.
I always regard "real" pick-ups (i.e. a news outlet writing a story, based on the release) as a bonus. This requires individual outreach and is more in the realm of PR than SEO.
As always, don't over do press releases -- or any other technique. Regard press releases as just another part of a diversified link portfolio. Above all: don't embarrass yourself or your client with silly releases that contain no news hook. PR Web actually has some standards in this regards -- unlike it competitors. They sometimes reject releases or require edits. That's part of the reason it's a bit pricy.
And remember: even if it passes muster, a 20% off sale is not much of a story.
One release per client per month is plenty. I sometimes find myself doing less because I can't come up with anything worthy...even though I have a bulk subscription.
I agree that charitable contributions make good releases. Product launches and executive appointments are also press release staples.

PRWeb is a perfectly acceptable outlet for press releases. However, I think they are a bit pricey. No, you don't need to worry about duplicate content as I believe PRWeb uses proper canonical tags. If you have your own blog, or Web page where you can publish the release first (like a SMPR page), you could certainly use the canonical tag and then distribute to various news organizations. This would give you credit for the original content. For press releases you aren't so much going after original content as you are a link back to your site.
Be careful. The days of churning out press releases that aren't really news-worthy and getting good backlinks are over. You could actually do more harm than good. That being said, if you've got legitimate news to put out there, PRWeb is good, but they aren't the only game in town. Depending on your industry there might be specific PR outlets that could offer you better targeting for less money. Because I work for a company that does a lot of B2B with churches, for example, we frequently use Christian News Wire.
There are also a few free ones out there, but again, be careful. If they are just publishing anything and aren't filtering for real news and announcements, stay away from them.
Hope that helps a little?

Hi Brandon,
If the company has something to announce, something interesting (not a website update) then yes this is a good way to build some links. My favorite is charities they are an easy win win. You help by donating time/money to a good cause. Attend a reliable charity event and network with everyone there, get the name of the person who organized the event. Call the event organizer and tell them you had a great time and you are preparing a PR on the event. They are usually extremely happy to hear that.
Once you receive the list contact everyone and offer them to leave a quote with a link to their site on the PR. Also let them know that after the PR goes out to share it with their social media.
Syndicate the PR to your own blog and have the share that link ; )
This is where everyone shared the article from:

Hope this helps.

Web 2.0 Backlinks
Hi Normal Web 2.0 websites like Wordpress.com, blogger.com have very High DA and PA. But when we create a subdomain, DA and PA falls to 1 as Google treats subdomain as new websites. Does it make any sense then to get backlinks from web 2.0 websites? will it help in Google rankings?

Best free or inexpensive backlink audit tools
I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for free or inexpensive backlink audit tools? Of course I have access to Search Console and to the OSE but it seems they don't offer a complete picture of our backlink profiles. I have previous experience using Link Research Tools for this but this is too expensive for the amount of use we would get out of it so I am looking for (much) cheaper alternatives. I look after 8 websites, however very little active link building was done for these in the past so we are not experiencing any issues due to bad links, but I would still like to get a better picture of our complete backlink profile. I've considered just using a trial of Majestic or Ahrefs for this, but this would only be a one off solution. I would welcome any suggestions. Thanks!

Which Backlinks to Disavow?
I am a site owner just getting to learn more about managing things myself after outsourcing SEO to a firm a year back (they stopped all activities about 8 months back). The question I have is about disavowing the low quality links. After collecting all the data from many sites on the basis of this helpful posting - (http://moz.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-google-penalty-removal), I am now left with around 2,800 back-links. I discovered most of the bad ones using ahrefs and majestic (and Google webmaster did not show many of the bad links). In fact, in the very first place, I realized that there was a spam problem when I saw the anchor cloud on ahrefs which showed many unrelated anchors for my site. I have three questions: **First, **Many URL's are actually from websites which have nothing to do with my line of business and I can sure spot them. What I get confused with is this - I can not say that these sites are downright spam. Some of them look to be good sites for example - a coffee machine vendor (with full business details and a fairly decent looking business), a Nike sports shoes mart etc. But they have nothing to do with my business. So my first question is - What is spam really? Would a back link from a high ranking website in the travel industry be considered spam from the point of view of someone who runs a website for medical equipment, specially if the back-link is from an unrelated anchor text like - "3 nights travel package" (which has nothing to do with medical business). I think I should disavow all the low quality back links with an erroneous anchor but Id like some views on this. Second, I see that in the disavow file, one could either upload a whole domain or a specific URL (could somebody please confirm this). I have some sites which have 8-12 (more in some cases) back links to my site. In most cases these sites are either really bad quality or have nothing to do with my business. I am tempted to disavow the entire domain for such sites instead of going by the URL's. Any views? Third, this is what I'd really like some help with. In case I delete the very pages (on my site) to which these back links point, should I still disavow the pointing domain? Finally: I have not created most of these backlinks. In fact, over the last 2-3 months we have started creating links from good sites in my industry. Most of the anchor cloud is good for me on ahrefs but there are these bad ones to which my question relates. I have not got any manual penalty from Google, though my traffic I think took a hit in the first week of October 2013.

Ways to remove spammy backlinks
Hello everyone, I got hit with an algorithm penalty and need to start removing old backlinks ASAP. Does anyone have any good resources on how best to ask webmasters for removal? Are there any other ways to remove bad back links besides the disavow tool? (An SEO consultant I talked to said that they had a proprietary software that can remove them - is that possible?) Thanks all,

How does Google treat multiple backlinks on the same page?
Hello mozCrew Just a quick yay or nay. We have an embeddable code on our site for customers who want to post our link on their website listed here: http://www.accupos.com/etc/embed-code-restaurants.php But in our link, there are actually 2 separate links, one branding link that says the name of our company, AccuPOS, and another link which targets a specific target keyword "Restaurant POS Software". My question is, does Google only give credit for the branding link, since it is listed FIRST? Or will we get double credit? Is this a good or bad practice, and what would you recommend? Thank you! SEO Value of Press Releases
Is there still any SEO value of paid press releases services, such as PRWEB which let you embed keyword text links? Or would the associated cost be better spent elsewhere? Thanks
