Confirmation page gets hit multiple times by some users. How I can I segment out unique visits?
-
Hi All,
I'm web marketing manager at http://www.evenues.com which is like an AirBnB for meeting space. When calculating the number of bookings for our meeting spaces, I've set up a goal in analytics with the confirmation page as the goal URL. The problem is, it seems that some users are looking at the same confirmation page several times. We have unique URLs for each confirmation page, but some users seem to be visiting these unique pages more than 2 to 5 times. This skews our numbers a bit.
This makes things a bit problematic when it comes to segmenting visitors. is there anything we can so that each unique URL visited only counts once?
Thanks,
Kenji

Hi Kenji,
I'm not sure if you're still experiencing this problem or have found a workaround at this point...
I'm wondering if you c an figure out how people are getting back to that conversion page for their subsequent visits. Are they simply bookmarking the page, or is it linked to a confirmation email/similar?
What I'm thinking you could do is set a variable in your confirmation URL, just a means of varying the URL slightly for that first time you push the user to the final step.
So instead of:
http://www.example.com/thankyou.html
You'd use:
http://www.example.com/thankyou.html?var=true
(The "var=true" can be anything - it won't effect the page load.)
Changing your Goal URL setting to Exact match, you could require this variable.
So when you push your users to the final step (the true conversion), you send them to the URL including the variable.
Then, from all other places the user might be able to navigate back to the confirmation page (emails, etc), the variable is not included in that version of the URL. And to ensure they aren't just bookmarking the page and coming back later, you can use HTML 5's pushState() to change the address bar and remove the variable after Google Analytics tracks the pageview.
Hope this helps. I think taking a closer look at how you can customize the confirmation page URL for the first time the user hits it is where you'll find your answer.
Best of Luck,
Mike -
Can you do a head match for the goal and do a custom report segmenting new visitors?

Blog Analytics broke for two weeks. How do I account for these hits in my monthly report?
The Analytics on my blog broke for about two weeks before I realized it. I need to come up with some estimated numbers for total pageviews, referrals, direct hits, etc to add to my monthly SEM report. I took the average of the past four 2 week periods to come up with the number of hits. Should I just add this number to the total hits on my site? Or are these hits being counted twice if they went on to the main site? http://www.howlatthemoon.com

Why am i getting a flux of increase in Impressions on my site & then it decreases
They guys. Hope everyone is having a great week. I wanted to get some inputs from you guys in regards to what is happening to my site that i quite don't understand. Every month or so i get this influx of high visibility with impressions for my keywords and then the impressions go away but my rankings still keep going up. Has anyone experienced this before and can give me some insight on what is going . Why do i get such a big jump and then it dies off only to return again a month later or 2 months later. I know you guys want probably some info from my site or from analytics or webmaster tools so i will provide as much as i can . For now i have included a screen shot. 800,000 pages blocked by robots...
We made some mods to our robots.txt file. Added in many php and html pages that should not have been indexed. Well, not sure what happened or if there was some type of dynamic conflict with our CMS and one of these pages, but in a few weeks we checked webmaster tools and to our great surprise and dismay, the number of blocked pages we had by robots.txt was up to about 800,000 pages out of the 900,000 or so we have indexed. 1. So, first question is, has anyone experienced this before? I removed the files from robots.txt and the number of blocked files has still been climbing. Changed the robots.txt file on the 27th. It is the 29th and the new robots.txt file has been downloaded, but the blocked pages count has been rising in spite of it. 2. I understand that even if a page is blocked by robots.txt, it still shows up in the index, but does anyone know how the blocked page affects the ranking? i.e. while it might still show up even though it has been blocked will google show it at a lower rank because it was blocked by robots.txt? Our current robots.txt just says: User-agent: *

Google Analytics Organic search queries aren't being updated, even though I'm still seeing results in all our typical results pages.
We pushed some new changes to the site and Google Analytics is no longer updating the Organic Search queries listing, even though traffic is consistent and and we're still landing results in all our typical keyword searches. Any ideas?

Google.co.uk (The Web or Pages From UK) Query?
Hi, Google.co.uk is ambiguous at best, it is geo targeted for the UK, however, by default all results incorporate "The Web" meaning outside the UK. If a user wishes to filter to "Pages From UK" then they have to click that specifically. Now my clients regularly ask me whether the traffic they are getting is from Google.co.uk (The Web) or Google.co.uk (Pages from UK) In analytics it combines these two as single source = Google.co.uk without any further breakdown, is there a way to figure this out. If I can split the figures then I can run necessary additional comparisons etc. Regards Ausaf
