A backlinks question
-
Hi all
Could do with a second opinion on this one if anyone has a moment please.
Recent Google updates have targeted overally optimised backlink profiles as they are clearly for seo purposes and not natural. The question I have is how does this relate to an ecommerce website?
If I sell 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (I know nothing about cheese so perhaps not the best example!!) and I have a url on my shop domain.com/store/blue-1980-aged-cheese with the product name as the page title along with the domain name. If I were to get backlinks pointing to this page using the anchor of 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (and other variations of that, blue cheese, aged blue cheese etc) would this be considered to be too optimised?
Given the page is about this item then surely it could be considered natural that people link using the product name, as well as using the site name and the domain url
Any thoughts please
Thanks, Carl

Hey, a couple of links to the top 100 products would likely make a big difference, just try to keep it natural.
You may do better with a highly scalable content + outreach campaign to bring in hundreds of links as manual link building for this many pages is just not practical.
Or, alternatively, some kind of competition or some such to try and stimulate natural linking to the product pages - obviously, idea needs fleshing out and not knowing your industry it's a total shot in the dark but... there is always a way.
Best of luck!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. You make some very interesting points which I will take on board. I will take a look over the studies mentioned. You're right when saying the product pages on big retailers such as Amazon tend to have little to no backlinks. My website has about 85,000 products so one of the alternative strategies being considered is to seo just the root domain or the categories instead. It will take longer to see results this way but if I can get the overall domain authority much higher by working with just a few pages then the knock on effect should help the rest of the site.
Many thanks

Hey Carl
There was a good study done on this by Distilled and published here at SEOMoz a while back.
As I remember, they looked at anchor text distribution for different types of pages and it was determined that product pages would have around 45% keyword anchors (varied of course). They then broke that 45% down so that 25% of it was an exact match anchor and then the rest was several varieties of that including branding etc.
The whole article is worth a read but the general advice was that you work to a 7:3 ratio and for every 3 (varied) keyword links you build you would add seven branded or safe links (URL etc).
Another point worth noting here is that product pages don't tend to get mega amounts of external links. I just checked a few well established products on amazon and they tended to have a low amount of links. Somewhere between 10 and 25. In fact, the main xbox 360 model only had 22 links so don't go overboard.
There is a lot more to what is considered natural with links than just anchor text though so be careful if you are asking this to help engineer the natural or create a supernatural set of product links.
Hope that helps.
Marcus

The anchor text from your link profile, will never penalize you. It might not be as great as a keyword based anchor text but it doesn't have a negative impact. On the other side, if you have 80% of your link's anchor text saying "blue 1980 aged cheese", Google will see that something's not right and you will not get the value that you would from a natural link profile.
If the links are genuine and are inbound from genuine websites and not link farms or spam sites, you should be fine. Penguin is about penalizing black hat tactics, for example, buying links from link farms.

Blog post outreach for backlinks
Hi all, My understanding of obtaining backlinks by way of blogpost outreach is that it's best to include several outbound links to related high domain websites within blog post copy (as well as a link to the website you're marketing, obviously) such as this post https://www.scoopearth.com/why-should-you-use-royalty-free-music-for-youtube-videos/ or this one https://small-bizsense.com/how-to-create-quality-content-for-your-business/. However, I've recently read a few articles that suggest that from a human perspective only having one clear link in the copy, such as this post https://www.clichemag.com/entertainment/movies/the-benefits-of-royalty-free-cinematic-music-for-your-videos/, increases the chance of the reader visiting the site in question. I guess the thinking is that if there's only one link to be clicked on it increases the chances of click-thru, as opposed to the reader possibly clicking on another external link that's only there because of current SEO advice. So is it best to follow SEO guidelines and include several outbound links within guest blog posts, or is it better to only have the one link to your client's site (to focus the readers attention on it)?

Beginners question about co-location/citation
Hi, could any fellow users lend me their experience please, I feel I may have confused myself!! Cut a long story short, one of the seo techniques I (like many here) employ is guest authority for sites. This is done through a manual process on quality sites. However, many sites are panicking now about Google and are nofollowing the author link back to my site. While the guest blogging wasn't done exclusively for links, a backlink is always nice. This got me onto the topic of co citation. From what I understand, it is essentially google rewarding you but without giving you back link credit. This is no the area where I have confused myself...am i right in thinking that if my brand is talked about in content on a quality site about Internet Security, then google can see the mention of my brand and will still award me some benefit from. To gain said benefit from the content is it enough that my brand is mentioned, for example 'Brand X published a paper about keeping kids safe online in 2013' or would the brand x thing need to be an active link to my site (no follow). Does this make sense? I did warn that i have managed to confuse myself hehe Many thanks for firstly talking the time to work out what on earth I have written and for any feedback offered.

PR1 and PR2 backlinks
We're doing some content marketing. I've heard that it is a good idea to target even PR1 and PR2 sites (small DA sites). I'm concerned about these sites disappearing after a few months, as we've found that losing a backlink can sting a bit and be worse than never having it. Though this isn't as big a deal any more. Anyways, can somebody say when a PR1/PR2 backlink would be appropriate to go after? Some of them would be easy and if it's appropriate I'd like to include them. So far they would only pass our standards if they are Above PR0 Look like a white hat, quality site from the outside Have a clean backlink profile Look like they're going to stick around Successful Social Media Accounts a plus What are you guys' criteria for including these sites? Do you gain value from them?

When do backlinks start helping?
I have been working hard at getting quality backlinks but I had a lot of keywords slip in rankings this week. This may because I have been extremely busy for a week and haven't added a lot of content to my site. But I thought the backlinks would be helping. How long does it take backlinks to start boosting your site and what results should I see? I am focusing on getting backlinks from a site with a PR of 7. The others have a PR of 4-5. They are the BEST sites in my niche.

Diverse SEO On & Off page questions!
Hey everybody. I have been reading several resources on SEO, and wanted to know your opinion on these topics. I know they are diverse and should be on a different set of questions, but i wanted to give it a try. I run a Heavily Specialized Steel B2B eCommerce Site. So my question would be what is the importance of the following topics, taking into mind the nature of my site. The importance on how often the page is updated ? Recommendations on updating relatively static pages ? How important is to meet HTML and W3C Standards, also its validation. The NoFollow and Follow ratio of incoming links. Your opinion onthe inclusion of outbound links to other relevant pages. Is there a best practice? Any comment is welcome, and would be deeply appreciated. Regards,

Backlinks, how do you get them?
Recently, I listed our site on a few directory's which I deemed as not spammy and had good domain authority (competitors were using these). This was about 2 weeks ago and have not seen them come up as a backlink using open site explorer? I was wondering whether i'm missing something out here or does it take longer than 2 weeks to gain a backlink from a website? Thanks in advance.

Question on term and what to target next? Nice dilemma to have!
Guys, I have an interesting dilemma that the team here is discussing and wanted your input here is the situation: 1. We had our home page rank for a key word 4-5 on google for the past 2 years. 2. About 5 weeks ago, the home page and a sub page began ranking on top 10 for the same term. 3. Today, the sub-page a "What is page" ranks 3-5 on google and the home page is dropped somewhere like 22 or so now ** I believe I should begin redirecting that anchor text to the sub page, and maybe even some or all of our internal anchor texts to this page... Any recommendations? The home page is optimized to help get conversions, so we hate to 'give up' on that term, but any one run into this? What did you do? Thanks Community SEOMOZ! for any input...

Best way to index backlinks
We have created many high authority back links for our clients and after several months we have noticed 10% or so have actually been indexed (via multiple sources). I am trying to find a way to easily get these backlinks indexed. There is a bunch of software out there, some create RSS feeds and others social bookmark these pages. Any suggestions?
