Best Practices For Keyword Optimization
-
Hey currently building a new page on a clients site in the weight loss niche. The keywords he wants to rank for are the following:
<colgroup><col width="198"> <col width="64"></colgroup>
| [fat burning foods] | 49500 |
| [foods that burn fat] | 22200 |
| [fat burning foods for women] | 2900 |
| [belly fat burning foods] | 2900 |
| [best fat burning foods] | 1900 |
| [fat burning foods for men] | 1900 |
| [list of fat burning foods] | 720 |His site is new, but he has excellent content production capabilities.
My question is, in terms of optimizing the page (the title and url) for these keywords would you focus on the highest volume keyword.
In this case the highest volume keyword is "fat burning foods" however is the most competitive and dominated by high domain authority sites (50+ vs. clients site which is around 30). Thus its highly unlikely he will rank for that keyword for quite a while.
But for the keyword term "best fat burning foods" the competition is alot less in terms of DA and other factors but volume is smaller with 1900 hits a month.
So would you optimize the page (the title and url) for "best fat burning food" or would you optimize thinking about the long-term and eventually ranking the keyword "fat burning foods".
My thinking would be to optimize the page for "fat burning foods". And that the benefits of optimizing (url and title) for "best fat burning foods" isn't ideal for the long-run.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi,
Like some mentioned in their answers, you should mix and match.
I would use the keyword that you want to rank for in the end (the competitive keyword) as URL and Titles and use the less competitive keywords in the content. If you use the keywords you don't want to rank for in the end in your URL and etc., once the website has been around and start getting daily visitors, I don't think you want to change the URL to the more competitive keyword.

Can your client's business survive the next year or two with little or no traffic while you go after the big keywords? I'm guessing no. 100 actual visitors a month is better than 10,000 theoretical visitors that never materialize. Start out targeting attainable keywords. Once those are secure and your client is getting decent traffic, move on to more challenging keywords.

I usually start optimizing for the long tails (many time the competitive kw is in the long-tail phrase) before competitive keywords. What is crucial (as you know) is having a compelling landing pages and begin building the funnels to these pages.

Mix and match Mark, mix and match, especially for highly competitive KW's.

Choosing the right keywords when the products are similar
What keywords should I choose if I have 3 similar products, only the value differs?

Keyword: $ 100 discount coupon Product 2: $ 75 discount coupon

Keyword Plan Of Attack
We have looked up our direct competitor to see what keywords they rank #1 for (aside from their own company name). We have narrowed it down to 3 that we want to focus on. Our plan is to build internal landing pages, external landing pages and beef up our content. Is that a good strategy to start or are we missing something?

Should I concentrate keyword ranking locally or nationally?
Hi all, I have spent few last days reading here in community and watching Moz videos about keyword research. I used keywords planner tool. Here is the question. When I researched keywords I took into account search traffic nationwide UK rather then my local search volume. My photography business operates more for local customers rather then nationwide. Does it mean that I need to concentrate on my local city/region search volume rather then nationwide. After I have done Nationwide keyword research I realised that most of those keywords which are with really high search volumes are pretty much non existent in my local search results. I meant to the point that keyword search volume is under 10. Considering that I have small number of pages i could use them for, my guess is that it is no point to target those high search volume keywords as most likely those won't be my clients anyway. I might be getting all this wrong, but wanted to ask here. Thank you all, Regards, Armands

National keyword results v local keyword results
If the keyword contains the location term like "SEO company London" is it better to use the wider results over local? Additionally, some best practice examples of national v local result tracking would be great 🙂 Darren

Which page is currently ranking the best for a particular keyword?
Hi Guys! I have approx. 50 keywords that I'm tracking for a website that has about 80 pages. I am wondering is there any way that I can find out which page on the site is currently ranking best for each of the keywords on my list? Ideally I would like to export the entire list with the keyword in the first column and the page that ranks best on the website for each given keyword, in the second column. Apologies if the wording of this post is confusing - I am not quite sure how to make it clearer. The aim of my task is to determine which keywords should be allocated to each page on the site so I need to work out which keywords are working already for certain pages so that I don't take those efforts away from the well-optimised pages. Many thanks! Meaghan

How accurate is Googles Keyword Planner?
I did some keyword research for our company. Some of the terms we got 100,000 search volume for in 2011 now have only 90 monthly searches. I am doing exact match for both US and Global and neither are any where near those high of numbers. Now I can't say how the old report on this was done but we are all a little skeptical of these numbers. Is there any other tool out there for search volume on Google? The Moz tool while it lists Google as an option only does Bing. Thank you!
