Looking for feedback on our nonprofit site
-
I work for a nonprofit org which of course means a low budget and paying out of pocket for things (such as training).
Our current website is done by a 3rd party vendor and although it looks nice, we can't make any changes to it without paying for it. (We can only upload documents).
I'm wondering if anyone in this group will give their feedback on the site in terms of SEO and recommend a platform that would be relatively easy for a small shop to manage.
Our site is www.coastalcommunityfoundation.org
Thanks in advance

I'm trying to make a case at work to bring it in-house so we can have fresh content on the site. We're also paying the company $100 to host & don't have high traffic so I know we can pay much less -- and get a nonprofit rate in some cases.
I'm hoping to collect comments like these and take them back to work.

I definitely understand a web developer wanting to set limits with clients. I have heard horror stories.
My frustration is that we can't add new content or new pages. Our quote to integrate the blog with the existing site was $5,000 so we're keeping it on blogger for now.
That's impressive with AdWords. I've been managing our Google grants account with little success. Part of me thinks it's because we don't have a whole lot of action steps on our site. It's not clear what a visitor is supposed to do when they get there.
Thanks for the input.

I worked as a non-profit executive long before I ever got involved in SEO.
So I appreciate the difficulties with budget, staffing, and training.
That said, I really think the long-term answer is to take more of the work in-house. Given the Rip Van Winkle timelines that can prevail in non-profits, this could be a one or two year process. All the more reason to get started right away!
If you are on another platform, migrating everything to WordPress, for example, is not a small task. But it could probably be done for $1,000 to $2,500 by a developer whose mandate also includes training a staff member or intern for all future updates short of a major redesign. The developer could then lurk in the background, ready to be called on rare occasions. I have been though his process for both for-profit and non-profit clients.
I really think the days of delay, dependency and paying $50-$150 for every minor text or graphic change need to die.

Hey, Tina.
I second what XNUMERIK said, and given that I have worked with a number of nonprofit clients not all that far from you, I'll add this...
I previously worked with 1,600 nonprofit clients and fully managed sites for maybe 100 or so. For those clients, we budgeted a certain amount of changes into their monthly contracts so that, while yes they were paying for them, they didn't feel nickeled and dimed every time they wanted something updated, a new page created, etc. In some of those cases, we gave clients minimal site access, but not enough that they could potentially mess things up – delete the home page, take down the whole site, and so on. Hopefully, you at least have the ability to create new pages and content yourself. If not, you might consider moving to a provider that will give you full content access... if that is an option of course.
If you choose to move, you have a lot of different options – Wordpress, Squarespace, Drupal, and more. All have their advantages, and all of them have a plethora of design and site management shops dying to find new clients. Unfortunately, in my experience (and maybe yours as well), recoding for a new platform can be very cost-prohibitive, and then depending on how you have your contract set up with your vendor, getting technical help can also be expensive sometimes... not to mention that choosing the wrong provider is not only a huge headache, but also costly.
All in all, your site looks good, but that being said, there are things that I would change – move context setting to the top, increase font size in most places, merge the blog into the site, change the nav items, put much more emphasis on getting email sign ups, and so on. If you haven't gotten one already, apply for a Google Grant. I used to run one for a client that did somewhat similar work to yours, and for only the cost of my management time, we were getting +$18,000 in monthly GIK AdWords spend from Google, which sent over 26,000 monthly visitors to their site and added to the positive increases they were seeing in donations, email sign ups, social media activity, and more. If you're not doing that already, you probably could be.
I hope that helps. Best of luck.

I have taken a quick look at your website.
In terms of SEO, I would say that your vendor didn't do a bad job.
In fact, it would be hard to ask for more than a well structured website, clean URLs, good titles... if you didn't specifically request a Search Engine Optimized website.
Of course, there are many major improvements that could be made like adding a sitemap, a robots.txt file, description to pages...
Here is a tool that will give you a nice broad picture of your website's SEO:
Hope that helps!

Thinking about redesigning site to reduce bounce rate - have a couple of questions
BACKGROUND Im looking at redesigning the website for a creative consultancy to improve the user experience. The website is mainly an image portfolio along with “press”, “our services”, “about us”, “contact” pages. I originally designed the website a few years ago and when we did, we wanted to make the image portfolio the most important feature. So we made it a full screen JS image slider with lazy loading of images, so that there are about 40 full screen images on the homepage that rotate. From a users point of view i still feel this is the best system as it very quickly allows them to browse the portfolio, which we looking for a creative consultancy is their UPS (unique selling point). The site has a very strong backlink profile compared to its competitors in the SERPS it has about 20-25% increase in PA and DA. But our site has been slipping down the rankings in recent years / months. From spot 1-2 to about spot 5-7. MY HYPOTHESIS I think that the reason the site may be dropping back in the SERP is that although its a very usable site, all its portfolio information is “too easy to find / view” and results in a user coming to our site, seeing everything they need to see, then bouncing back to the SERP. Our site has a bounce rate of 40-60%. Where as on competitors sites, their “portfolio” is a separate page off the homepage, so a users has to click through to a separate page, and even if they don't like the design content of the portfolio it doesn't get logged as a bounce. MY QUESTION Does bounce rate affect SERP ranking ? Could the sites SERP performance be improved by redesigning the site to put the portfolio on a separate page so a user would have to click through to it, if that would get the bounce rate down, would the site see a benefit even if people still clicked back to the SERP results eventually after seeing our portfolio, even though it wasn't a true 1 page bounce ? Dose time on site affect SERP ranking ? Is there a way i can see a competitor's bounce rate ? Would welcome any other thoughts inputs on this matter.

Will There Be Much Impact When Moving Site To New Root Folder?
Hi, ok so I have a pretty big site that is located on my sever /root/current-folder/. I want to rebuild the site completely as it's using software that is out of date and not our main focus anymore (OpenCart). We want to move to a Wordpress platform, but want to have as little impact on the SEO as possible. Our current strategy is: List all URLs/Titles/Meta indexed with Google on current site Create new folder on the server /root/new-folder/ My question is... if I move to a new folder on the server (same TLD) and then re-route the TLD to go to this new folder, will there be more of an impact on SEO that if I start a fresh in the current folder? Thanks

Do Google Fonts Slow Down Your Site?
Hi Guys,
Web Design | | jeeyer
I just did a webpage speed test on http://www.webpagetest.org to see how our site is performing.
I noticed that an exteral URL called fonts.gstatic.com has a "huge" impact on our sites loading time. See a screen here: http://monosnap.com/image/z6drzC2ELoJ48d1rM0Tmtuszl3pFpH#
An overview can be seen here: http://monosnap.com/image/9hofUpr5Ld8D7mi7zyaJmGFIGhpBsY# All our scores are green and A (finally!) but I was a bit concerned when I saw the outcome of the pagespeedtest regarding the fonts.
When I load a page on my pc I indeed notice that the text content is usally quite slow in showing up, pops up afer a few seconds. Is this a know problem and Is this something I need to fix? If so what is the best approach? Looking forward on your thoughts!

What To Do When Improved Site Speed & Layout Result In Higher Bounce Rates & Lower Time On Site
We launched a new Bootstrap 3.0 site template 2 weeks ago. The site loads 5x faster and has a much improved layout (utilizing most common above the fold recommendations ). It's only been two weeks, but our bounce rate has increased 5-10% and our avg time on site decreased by 10-18%. Here is the page for one of our most common products so you can see the general experience: <a>http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a> (here is the old version: <a>http://199.119.123.134/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a>) We spent two months implementing the new design and working on a speedy load time. We had anticipated a drastic improvement, not mild downturn in user behavior. I'm hopeful that the Analytics metrics aren't showing the true picture on the keywords we care about (can't see anymore due to "Not Provided" listed as most keywords now. Argh!) and perhaps some of the more important/accurate user behavior metrics that we can't see are improving. We know our industry and our clients needs VERY well. We THOUGHT our new content/layout was perfect so it will be tough for us to try to make improvements at this point. We believe our best plan of action now is to add more content on each page and A/B test it along with other subtle changes. The problem is that our new content is very concise and hits on all of the primary visitor intentions, so additions of content could be redundant and making concise answers more "fluffy", which is what we tried to get away from. What do you think? Is there reason for panic? What would your plan of attack be if your "sure shot" new design didn't provide the improvements you "knew" it would? 🙂

My site build in HTML has been badly hit this recent update and I have been toying on the idea of changing it to Wordpress
My site build in HTML has been badly hit this recent update and I have been toying on the idea of changing it to Wordpress. Would this help in my rankings? It seems the hit came only that last 2-4 days when business become much quieter. Frankly i have no idea on why the site fell in ranking all of a sudden. Been comparing to competitors and even a friend in the same industry and nothing makes sense so far (link profile, DA, PA etc) This site has been ranking well for 3 years prior to this. 2. My site has loads of content and visitors arrive from various landpages. But by changing it wordpress, the url of most of them would probably change. What should i do? 301 redirect all of them or is there a better method?

International SEO issues for multiple sites
We currently have 3 websites: oursite.co.uk oursite.fr oursite.ch We also own Oursite.com, and that URL currently redirects to Oursite.fr. We are considering a complete site redesign and a possible merge of the 3 sites. Assumptions: ** the 3 sites currently receive organic search traffic to varying degrees
Web Design | | darkgreenguy
** Oursite.ch is almost identical to Oursite.fr in terms of the site content
** Our target market is NOT the USA for English-language searches. It is the UK. With a re-design, we see our options as follows: Merge the 3 sites and make Oursite.com the "main site" and then have subfolders as follows: /uk /fr /ch Keep the 3 sites as they are. We see Option 1 as the best in terms of saving time when updating the site, and saving money paid to the site developers (1 site vs 3 sites). We see Option 2 as the best in terms of ability of the site to rank, as well as confidence of searchers when seeing our site in the search results (in other words, a person searching in France would be more likely to buy and/or submit a form on our site if they saw Oursite.fr vs Oursite.com/fr). I guess we're looking for some suggestions/guidance here. Are we missing any big issues? Does anyone have experience with an issue such as this? Thank you in advance...

For a varied product type or keywords group is it best to have several sites?
Hello everyone... Question: I have 7-8 generic keywords that I would like to rank for, is it possible for one site to rank highly for all these different keywords, or would this be best achieved by making 2 or 3 websites in total targeting different keywords (product sectors)? More info: We are in a niche industry & would like to know if it would be beneficial to have several websites made for specific product types rather than one main site? Although these sub classifications of products are nice, they are competitive as they have a high search volume Would it be better to build specific websites that only do that one type of product and have related keyword in domain, content & blogs on the site to that effect to increase relevance and positions as a result? Thanks
