Sudden drop in PageRank to Unranked
-
Howdy,
A clients website has just dismorning (8/FEB/13) gone from index page PR:4 to Unranked including all inner pages on the domain.
There is no contact on GWT or penalty email from Google.
All organic rankings seem to be fine, and i read about the GWT backlink glitch earlier.
Should I expect the worst?
Thanks..

Hi Cyrus,
Thanks for your detailed reply, really appreciated.
Seems the site did get some what buggy with the new PR update. It was back to normal after 12 hours or so. No drop in rank or traffic over the weekend so it looks like we're in the clear.
The Google cached image of the homepage has resolved it's self also.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Mark,
Toolbar PageRank is often not a very good indicator of how Google actually views your site. The important thing is your rankings and traffic, which you say is fine. This would indicate you are both in Google's index and are being served in search results. Yah!
Google did just update it's Toolbar PageRank, so this could be part of the issue, but I am concerned with how you described the page showing up in search results. (php error)
Here's what you can do to test:
1. In Google Webmaster Tools, use the "Fetch As Googlebot" tool to test if Google can access the homepage
2. Is your homepage in Google's cache? There are many ways to do this, here's one
3. Use the MozBar to crawl as GoogleBot. Set the user agent setting for "Googlebot" (I've attached a screenshot)
The reason for this is sometimes Viruses and Spam Attacks will take over your website and show one version to Google, but another version to users.
If all of these things check out, and you maintain your traffic, you should be fine!

Wouldn't we all my friend!
Serious client, lets see how the PR issue pans out over the weekend.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply Charles,
The site doesn't have protected WHOIS. Nor does it have 1,000s of backlinks. It would be a 15 year old domain registered on BOTW & DMOZ.So it's very strange!
Google would know the author on Google+ and so forth. It wouldn't be a spammy website. It's a viable business in the training / education industry with 10+ staff.
There is something a bit fishy about the homepage screenshot on the companies SERP.
It's showing a PHP error and a blank white page. But on clicking the result the website is fine. Could this be to do with the site's last indexing? Google have indexed a error homepage which has effected the rest of the site? Note this is the only SERP that has this error.
Thanks for the help!

When "pruning" old content, is it normal to see an drop in Domain Authority on Moz crawl report?
After reading several posts about the benefits of pruning old, irrelevant content, I went through a content audit exercise to kick off the year. The biggest category of changes so far has been to noindex + remove from sitemap a number of blog posts from 2015/2016 (which were very time-specific, i.e. software release details). I assigned many of the old posts a new canonical URL pointing to the parent category. I realize it'd be ideal to point to a more relevant/current blog post, but could this be where I've gone wrong? Another big change was to hide the old posts from the archive pages on the blog. Any advice/experience from anyone doing something similar much appreciated! Would be good to be reassured I'm on the right track and a slight drop is nothing to worry about. 🙂 If anyone is interested in having a look: https://vivaldi.com https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots [this is the category where changes have been made, primarily] https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/keyboard-shortcut-editing/ [example of a pruned post]

Drop in Rankings
UPDATE* I temporarily removed the images from the page to check if rankings would come back and they did. So Google made a recent update in the Netherlands where they look at your page for adult content (pictures). For us it was breast augmentations, before and after pics. END Hey Guys, We have a site for plastic surgery in the Netherlands. We ranked on number 2 if someone searched for breast augmentation. But sinds 31 of januari our ranking dropped outside the top 50. I did not get a warning or an other message in Search Console. We have a lot of pictures on the website displaying before and after pictures. So you see breasts. Does anybody know if google rolled out an update where they look at photo's with audult content? We didnt do any linkbuilding or other black hat stuff. Kind regards, Ruud

Organic search traffic is dropping since September
We own a large wiki site which allows people to make articles about their business and other things that Wikipedia would prohibit. To make our site more rich and expand the pages people can link to on their pages, we scraped between 1-2 million pages from the english wikipedia, pages such as “Los Angeles, CA” and “United States” etc. We’ve been getting a steady supply of organic backlinks from users who create their own pages and cite their wikis on their website, in news etc. However, starting 2 months ago our organic traffic has started slowly decaying as if we have received some kind of algorithmic penalty. What could it be? Could it be dupe content from the wikipedia pages we imported and indexed? Could it be some kind of algo from the Penguin update? We are just very confused why our organic search traffic would begin to drop at all since every day we have organic users making quality pages, some of whom organically backlink their articles on their own website and these obviously add up over time.

A specific keyword has dropped from #1 in Google to nowhere at all...
Hi guys, I hope you can help. We have a large ecommerce website which has different domains for each language - GB, USA, DE, AU & CA. I've been working my way through the errors that have been flagged in Moz and today I noticed something quite worrying. One of our strong keywords has dropped from 1st place to nowhere at all. However, the Canadian version is ranking in the UK desktop search and our mobile site is appearing in the desktop search too. The keyword is 'personalised macbook cover' and the page in question is https://www.mrnutcase.com/en-GB/personalised-macbook-cover/ I'm confused as this page was ranking brilliantly a couple of weeks ago and now it's nowhere to be seen. We've added alternate and canonical tags to distinguish which site is mobile and which site is desktop. We've also submitted a sitemap so that it takes into account all of the languages. There are no harmful links and we've changed the content of the page across each language. I've attached what appears in the SERP's in the UK. (there is the mobile version ranking at the top and the Canadian version further down the page) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Danny webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=personalised%20macbook%20covers

Should we always avoid drop-down menus?
In Google's SEO Guide, they say avoid the use of drop-down menus, page 12: http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/www.google.com/en/us/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf But, is this always true? What if you create the drop down purely using HTML & CSS? Is it fine to use a bit of javascript to create the drop-down menu, or should it only be HTML & CSS?

What would cause a drastic drop in pages crawled per day?
The site didn't go down. There were no drop in rankings, or traffic. But we went from averaging 150,000 pages crawled per day, to ~1000 pages crawled per day. We're now back up to ~100,000 crawled per day, but we went more than a week with only 1000 pages being crawled daily. The question is, what could cause this drastic (but temporary) reduction in pages crawled?
