Automatic Redirect
-
Good morning to all! Is it normal that I change link and it automatically redirect to the new one? Our links are too long and all have Diani Beach in it what we have done a long time ago as we though it is a good move Now I know it is bed so I just opened post and change the permalink and then I open it in new window and instead of Not Found it opens the new link. Can I be doing this?

Hi Nitin, thank you very much for the advice! I have found that is doing plugin called Broken Link Checker. Thank you very much for your patient, time and great help.

Then you must be having a plugin in it which handles redirection automatically. something like this one http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/.
It is highly recommended you have this kind of plugin so that when you change URL, it automatically makes a redirect entry.
In case you do not want to use it then you will need to make entries in Apache.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi Nitin, it's wordpress

Can you confirm on which platform your site is made ? PHP / Drupal / ASP.net or anything else.
-
I am sorry, and appreciate your time to explain, but I am not getting it:-( I still do not know the answer to my question how is it possible that the links I change are automatically redirect to the new links.
-
There are many ways to do it - I recommend you to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_redirection#Techniques
Out of the given methods Apache mod rewrite is best as it gives proper information to search engines that the page is permanently redirected. Apart from this you can use 'noindex' on old URL so that search engines do not index it.

Hi Nitin, Thank you very very much for your reply. I understand that to redirect links is ok but how is it possible??? What is the issues around how to redirect with 301 and how comes I do not need to do this and it does on its own?? I do not have such plugin which makes automatic redirect on my theme http://villasdiani.com Example: I have created a post a long time ago which had quite long url.. Now, I did not like it, so I just change the link and instead of being not found it is found under the new link with no problem. How is this possible? The reason why I am asking is that I am afraid I will now change a number of links which are too long and as I do not know what is helping me to do the automatic redirect, perhaps one day I remove it and then I will end up with 300 not found links:-(

It is perfectly normal to redirect URLs automatically. You just need to keep basics of SEO in account. Danny Dover, in his book SEO Secrets, wrote "A pyramid structure for a website allows the most possible link juice to get to all the website’s pages with the fewest number of links."
One issue which generally comes is that the old pages are properly redirected making 2 pages available to search engines, thus eroding value or URLs.

SEO value of 301 redirects from non-existent sites.
I have a question about an SEO tactic. There is this site that has purchased three domain names, and has redirected them to their main site. The three domains are: Spokaneduilawyer org, Spokaneduilaw com, and Spokaneduilawfirm com and the website has all three domains redirecting to their main site. What is the SEO value with this? I looked at those three domains on Majestic and they have no backlinks that I could find, and when I looked on archive.org I didn't see any history of those domains being actual sites that might bring traffic. What is the webmaster trying to do, and what is this tactic called?

Switching CMS and want to redirect links
Hi guys, I have a site that I run which has been around for a little while. It is actually in phpnuke, it also has a phpbb forum.. The site is so customized that I need to move it to something newer. So I am moving it to Joomla. I created a new domain just to get the joomla site created so I can move it to the main domain. My question is this. How should I go about switching from phpnuke to joomla without losing the links that are going to my site. Also, where can I find the links that are pointing to my site? Thanks for looking.

Is it worth 301 redirecting an old backlink from a 404 to a landing page?
I was reviewing the 404 report in webmaster tools, when I found a 404 back link from a 10 year old forum topic on a very high DA site. It seems the poster did a direct hotlink to a pdf that was on our site a very long time ago, but is now gone so you get a standard "can not be found" page on our site. Is it now worth redirecting the url to an appropriate landing page, considering the age of the post/ link and the sites DA, or is it not worth it because of the age of the link, its a forum, and we are still getting some juice from it anyway despite it being a 404, and won't get much more out of it. Just want to know it good practice if I find many such links (very old links to now 404 pages) Thanks

How to build links for a domain name that is redirected to another url?
I'm helping a friend build links to his site because he recently moved across country. His primary domain isn't very SEO friendly (shef1.com) so he registered another domain (stephenshefrinphotography.com). Shef1.com has been around for awhile and has at least been crawled with a page rank of 1 so we decided to keep shef1.com as the main website and redirect stephenshefrinphotography.com to it. So for SEO sake I know it's best to at least have a keyword in your URL so I have been using the url stephenshefrinphotography.com in my link building efforts for local directories and blog comments. Is this the right way to go about this or should I be using the main url shef1.com? He had virtually no backlinks until I started helping him but the ones I have created over the last month are not showing up on the link analysis in my campaigns. I just want to make sure my efforts aren't in vain. Advice please. Thanks!

301 redirect on yahoo hosting
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could lend some advice to getting a 301 redirect on yahoo web hosting; I spoke with someone in SEO and they referred me to a site that had step by step instruction, the only problem is that was for the yahoo store, my business is not e commerce rather a service website. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem, some say that Yahoo does not offer "301 redirects" on their hosting, however, they say there are methods to cirumvent that, my site is html. Any suggestions would be great - thanks best regards, James C

Automatic Directory Submissions
I was talking to someone about automatic directory submissions with someone lately, and would love the thoughts of the community here. Basically, the thought was that automatic directory submissions wouldn't get flagged by Google, because they're directories, not necessarily spam links. Is this still true in a post-penguin world? He hasn't seen any negative effects from it yet, but I'm still cautious. My thoughts would be not to depend on the automatic submissions, but to use them as a supplement. If a handful (maybe 50/mo) of directory links could be submitted automatically, that could free up more time for content development and promotion, which is where I believe the real value lies. It would also help skeptical clients feel better about having a certain number of links. So, what have you seen so far? Is this dangerous, safe, or fairly pointless?

Do you get linkjuice from a dofollow redirect (Like Yahoo! Article links)?
I've recently hired a company that publishes my press releases for me. One of them is on Yahoo! Finance. When I went to the Yahoo article, my keyword link was dofollow, but had a very long Yahoo redirect link instead of just a direct link to my page. Am I still getting link juice out of this Yahoo redirect?
