Why use noindex, follow vs rel next/prev
-
Look at what www.shutterstock.com/cat-26p3-Abstract.html
does with their search results page 3 for 'Abstract' - same for page 2-N in the paginated series.

| |Why is this a better alternative then using the next/prev, per Google's official statement on pagination? http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1663744
Which doesn't even mention this as an option. Any ideas? Does this improve the odds of the first page in the paginated series ranking for the target term? There can't be a 'view all page' because there are simply too many items.

Hmmm - good thought. I wonder if Google is giving out deliberately bad advice for dealing with paginated sets, in that they never mention <noindex, follow="">as a viable alternative to next/prev. </noindex,>
If each paginated page is all unique assets (photos), why would it be dupe?

I don't think they're "gaming" Googlebot - I think they're trying to help the bots properly crawl through the site, index the relevant content, but not create hundreds of thousands of empty pages that will simply dilute their index and lower the overall value of the site in the search engine's eyes - I think they're trying to keep the Panda hungry and not provide it with lots of yummy food for it's low quality content hungry stomach.
This is why they are noindexing the pages - not to game the system, but to actually play by the system's rules.

Thanks Mark - if you disable javascript or impersonate Google-bot using a browser extension, then click on one of the main categories on the homepage bottom nav, you arrive here:
http://www.shutterstock.com/cat-5-Education.html
and click next, you get a URL like this: http://www.shutterstock.com/cat-5p2-Education.html
which is noindex,follow
if I arrive at the site without impersonating google-bot:
http://www.shutterstock.com/cat-5-Education.html#page=2
with a canonical back to http://www.shutterstock.com/cat-5-Education.html
So it seems they are trying to literally game Google - is there any evidence this works?

It seems like they noindexed that page because it may be part of an antiquated version of the site navigation/structure, or part of the cms and not something they want to promote. Not sure how you got there, but when you get to the primary version of a category, and then click through to the next page, the items shown change via ajax and the URL stays the same, just with a parameter that this is the second set of items being shown.
With the url staying the same, for their primary path of navigation, I don't think rel prev/next would be relevant. And these other pages probably created by the cms but not easily accessible they've noindexed - that's my best guess

There's more than one way to skin a cat. So while rel next/prev is an option, you could also dump it all out in one page OR you could also noindex your search page and let your sitemap do the work of notifying Google of your pages. I don't know that it's better (I would guess not but that's just a guess) but you could do it that way and not hurt yourself.

Content change within the same URL/Page (UX vs SEO)
Context: I'm asking my client to create city pages so he can present all of his appartements in that specific sector so i can have a page that ranks for "appartement for rent in +sector". The page will present a map with all the sector so the user can navigate and choose the sector he wants after he landed on the page. Question: The UX team is asking if we absolutly need to reload the sector page when the user is clicking the location on the map or if they can switch the content within the same page/url once the user is on the landing page. My concern: 1. Can this be analysed as duplicate content if Google can crawl within the javascript app or if Google only analyse his "first view" of the page. 2. Do you consider that it would be preferable to keep the "page change" so i'm increasing the number of page viewed ?

Canonical homepage link uses trailing slash while default homepage uses no trailing slash, will this be an issue?
Hello, 1st off, let me explain my client in this case uses BigCommerce, and I don't have access to the backend like most other situations. So I have to rely on BG to handle certain issues. I'm curious if there is much of a difference using domain.com/ as the canonical url while BG currently is redirecting our domain to domain.com. I've been using domain.com/ consistently for the last 6 months, and since we switches stores on Friday, this issue has popped up and has me a bit worried that we'll loose somehow via link juice or overall indexing since this could confuse crawlers. Now some say that the domain url is fine using / or not, as per - https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/trailing-slash-and-rel-canonical But I also wanted to see what you all felt about this. What says you?

Am I using pagination markups correctly?
Hey Mozzers! I am receiving duplicate title tag errors from Search Console on paginated pages (blog.com/chlorine, blog.com/chlorine-2, blog.com/chlorine-3). I do not currently have a view all page. If I were to create one, would I add all the content from chlorine-2 and chlorine-3 to the blog.com/chlorine page? Then use the rel=cononical on chlorine-2 and chlorine-3 to blog.com/chlorine? If I move forward without the view all page, I could implement the next/prev HTML markups but can I do this without dev help? I am currently using the Yoast SEO plugin and do not see the option. Would I use the text editor to add the markups directly before the content? I think I have a grasp on this, but this will be my first time implementing and I want to double check first! Thanks!

To include / at the end of a URL or not
Hi I have recently noticed my site works with / and the end of a URL and without. I wanted to know if there is any SEO impact on this? Will it be seen as 2 different pages? if so what is the best option to go for www.mydomain.com/page/ or www.mydomain.com/page Thanks E

Http:// to https:// 301 or 302 redirect
I've read over the Q & A in the Community, but am wondering the reasoning behind this issue. I know - 301's are permanent and pass links, and 302s are temporary (due to cache) and don't pass links. But, I've run across two sites now that 302 redirect http:// to https://. Is there a valid reason behind this? From my POV and research, the redirect should 301 if it's permanent, but is there a larger issue I am missing?

Picking a URL co.uk vs .net vs .biz which is best for SEO?
Hi I was always told that you only want a .co.uk or a .com is this still true? I am setting up an ecommerce site and the ideal .co.uk is gone! Am I better to have a longer ulr with maybe a hifen or a uk in it or is it ok to have a .biz or a .net these days? You help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks James

Should I no follow all external links?
I have worked with a few different SEO firms lately and a lot of them have recommended on the sites I was working on to "no-follow" all external links on the site. On one hand this traps all the link equity/Pagerank. On the other I would think this practice is frowned upon by Google. What are some opinions on this?

CamelCase vs lowernodash
I'm in the process of reviewing on-site URL structure on a few sites, and I've run into something I can't decide between. I am forced to choose between the two examples: MediaRoom/CaseStudies.aspx (camel case) mediaroom/casestudies (all lower case, mashed, no dashes) I would personally rather see: media-room/case-studies/ However implementing the dashes would require manually re-writing about ~10,000 URLs. Implementing 301s from the existing structure to whatever I choose would be trivial, so there is no concern there. Given the choice between CamelCase and lower-mashed, which would you choose? Why?
