Nofollow within your site, is it ever a good idea?
-
I started a new job running a companies E-commerce site. I have been going thought the site, backlinks etc to see what the current status is.
I have noticed that they have "no followed some categorises on the (huge) mega menu, but also they have no followed every product form categories.
Now personally I would have no follows on the login/register/checkout page, and maybe some external links, but my understanding has always been that by using no follow on internal links you just throwing away google juice.
I'm thinking was someone at some stage trying to do some misguided link sculpting with no follow, or I'm I missing something
Note: the company does not have brands per say for the product pages and so are not landing pages (the categories are landing pages)

"Nofollows cannot be used for link sculpting anymore, and just result in link juice evaporation."
This was what I thought too, just wanted to confirm, thanks

It is never a good idea to nofollow links on your own site.
Nofollows cannot be used for link sculpting anymore, and just result in link juice evaporation.
If you don't want pages on your site indexed, you should add a noindex, follow meta tag to the header. This will keep the page from being indexed while preserving link juice.
Nofollow should only be used for links you don't trust or sites that you have commercial relationships with, which could be construed as link buying.

"Do we believe today that nofollows really drain SEO equity from a website?"
I think so, but I don't think its 100% drop from a no follow (not that anyone said it was)
About a year or 2 ago (on a different site), they had a mega menu which had no-follow on less import categories (trying to link sculpt), This was changed so that they no followed links were just removed completely, and I believe this did have an effect on ranking on the pages that were not cut.
But I agree sometimes its necessary (easier?) to no-follow some links, and if its only a few there is very little damage, but I'm talking about every product page so collectively, possibl,y a lot of juice lost. I can't think of a good reason to do that, unless it was a lazy way to eliminate dup content or the product pages competing with the category pages as landing pages.

Do we believe today that nofollows really drain SEO equity from a website? Or was this something Matt Cutts started to discourage page rank scultping? I defer to greater minds on that. But if so it punishes good practices as well as bad, depending on the context.
We nofollow links not to page rank sculpt but, among other reasons, because we don't want spiders to take that particular route to whatever is behind that link. The nofollow pretends there isn't an href there. For example, our optimization/canonicalization on certain pages doesn't persist when certain links are followed -- so we nofollow those to prevent duplicate content.
Of course it's not always the most efficient way to manage crawling --but we don't worry about losing juice if we feel we need a nofollow.

Implementing nofollow tag affect ranking
if a blog that is performing well on the first page at an average position of 4 for an informative term. The blog contains a lot of outbound links, adding nofollow tag to all of them affect the current ranking? There are few other same cases. Here is the link - monk.webengage.com The was a lot of other optimization done on the page but the ranking did not improve at all. Is the issue with my domain authority or is it due to higher backlink to other competitive domains.

What on-site issue could be causing Moz to not detect internal links?
Hey guys, We've done a crawl and none of our internal links are showing up. Are there any on-page factors that would prevent Moz from being able to detect our internal links? Thanks!

Duplicate Page Titles? I thought this was good structure....
I have several warnings for duplicate page title.... I thought that I had good structure, but I guess I am doing something wrong. On my website (http://www.farnorthkennel.com), I am getting duplicate page errors for pages like this: http://www.farnorthkennel.com/german-shepherd-puppies-the-girls/hazel

and
http://www.farnorthkennel.com/german-shepherd-puppies-the-girls/emerald I thought that this sort of structure was a good idea since the end page is different. Should each page be set up right after the original domain name? I'm new at this....0 -

Site structure suggestions/feedback
I asked this on Reddit and got some some decent answers. I'm curious to see what the pro's of SEOmoz think. I've got a lead generation site for forklift parts--liftxparts.com. You can think of it similar to car parts, where we have sections for specific brands (e.x. Toyota forklift parts) and sections for specific categories (e.x. forklift filters). Right now, the site is structured in two main levels: the top level is a dozen or so brands (separate pages for Toyota forklift parts, Clark forklift parts, etc), and then the second level is the categories (separate pages for a dozen or so different categories like forklift filters, forklift engine parts, etc.).If you check out one of the pages, like Clark forklift parts for example (our top landing page)--liftxparts.com/clark-forklift-parts.html, you'll see that on the brand pages (they're all structured the same), we list all the different categories (with links to the same second level category pages) and "search" buttons. All pages point to the same lead capture form. This has been working pretty well--about 90% of visitors end up on our lead capture form, and a high percentage of those convert. We're working on increasing organic traffic now and I'm thinking our structure could use some improvement.Looking at the analytics, there are a lot more impressions for keywords like "clark forklift" than "clark forklift parts". One gap I've uncovered is while our average position, and by extension CTR and traffic, for phrases like "clark forklift parts" is quite good, it's not so good for broader and higher searched terms like "clark forklift". Should we add another level of hierarchy targeted to just general brands? So now we have content for clark forklift parts, but should we add a page for terms like "clark forklift"? Or should we just add some broader content to the existing brand pages? The pages are quite long already, I'm afraid adding more content to the bottom of the page isn't very functional. Our thinking is that we can increase average position for higher searched terms by adding content targeted to those terms. The question is how exactly to go about it and how to work it into our current site structure? Any feedback related to our site structure or even just related ideas about other ways to approach our goal of increasing organic traffic would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Site Downtime - Will pages be reindexed?
I recently had site downtime of about 10 days for a site I'm working on which is about 6 months old. There were naturally many page not found errors in webmaster tools as google had tried to crawl the site during the downtime but I've noticed that google has now dropped some of the pages. Are they likely to be reindexed? Google has crawled some of my pages today but as yet the ones that have been dropped from the index haven't reappeared. (the site has been live again for a week). Should they reappear when the pages are next crawled?

Should our social network put all of our member profiles in the site map?
We're working on some changes to our site and want to add a site map file to give some hints to search engines on our member profiles. Our site has millions of member profiles. I want to ensure that Google indexes them. Is there a benefit to submitting millions of profiles across multiple site maps? Is it better to pick a sample of those and submit them? Most member profiles have links to other member profiles. Is there any benefit to taking a single site map of 50k links and then changing it at some frequency so that all of the member profiles are eventually indexed? Thanks.
