What to do after a sudden drop in traffic on May 8?
-
Hello,
I own Foodio54.com, which provides restaurant recommendations (mostly for the US). I apologize in advance for the lengthy questions below, but we're not sure what else to do. On May 8 we first noticed a dip in Google results, however the full impact of this sudden change was masked by an increase in Mother's Day traffic and is only today fully apparent. It seems as though we've lost between 30% and 50% of our traffic. We have received no notices in Google Webmaster Tools of any unnatural links, nor do we engage in link buying or anything else that's shady, and have no reason to believe this is a manual action.
I have several theories and I was hoping to get feedback on them or anything else that anyone thinks could be helpful.
1. We have a lot of pictures of restaurants and each picture has its own page and these pages aside from the image are very similar. I decided to put a noindex,follow on the picture pages (just last night) especially considering Google's recent changes to image search that send less traffic anyways. Is there any way to remove these faster? There's about 3.5 million of them. I was going to exclude them in robots.txt, but that won't help the ones that are already indexed.
Example Photo Page: http://foodio54.com/photos/trulucks-austin-2143458
2. We recently (within the last 2 months) got menu data from SinglePlatform, which also provides menus to UrbanSpoon and Yelp and many others, we were worried that adding a page just for menus that was identical to what is on Urbanspoon et all would just be duplicate content so we added these inline with our listing pages. We've added menus on about 200k listings.
A. Is Google considering this entire listing page duplicate content because the menu is identical to everyone else?
B. If it is, should we move the menus to their own pages and just exclude them with robots.txt? We have an idea on how to make these menus unique for us, but it's going to be a while before we can create enough content to make that worthwhile.Example Listing with Menu: http://foodio54.com/restaurant/Austin-TX/d66e1/Trulucks
3. Anything else?
Thank you in advance. Any insight anyone in the community has would be greatly appreciated.

So your assertion that because we bring in some content from FourSquare (note through their API not by "scrapping" it) that we aren't providing value is really off the mark.
It is not about value. It is what google sees as duplicate content that is available on many sites. Google is demoting or filtering lots of pages that have content available on other websites.
Yelp and Urbanspoon might get away with it because they are more powerful than other websites.
I know that you don't like my answer. I am telling you why I believe your traffic is down.
Here is a big reason. Your site is showing lots of duplicate content.

Thanks for trying to help, but I think I have several specific issues regarding the menus, pictures, and how in general to handle a site with millions of pages, I wasn't really looking for a 30,000 foot high level examination of rankings in general. We do provide unique value, the sites that are providing real recommendations for local content, not just showing what your friends like or the highest average rating, you could count on one hand. When you do millions of calculations to tell someone you personally will like this restaurant a 4.37 Google only sees 4.37 (or maybe not even that because as I said it's personalized), does that mean you're not providing unique value because you don't have hundreds of reviews that people don't have time to read and make an informed opinion anyways? So your assertion that because we bring in some content from FourSquare (note through their API not by "scrapping" it) that we aren't providing value is really off the mark.
Also, I should note, Yelp and Urbanspoon, which obviously provide great content include these exact same menus too. Their implementations are different than ours so perhaps we should follow their lead.

You don't have to close your doors.
If you want your site to succeed today you have to present unique and valuable content to the visitor.
If you watch the people who come into SEO forums these days saying that their sites have lost a lot of google traffic many of them are sites that use "technical solutions" to present content found on other websites.
The sites that are doing well are sites who have authors creating new and unique information.
-
Hi,
Thanks for your response, but we're hoping you might have a more technical solution. Our value proposition is more connected to the mathematical recommendations we provide (NetFlix did a contest a few years back and we did pretty well), which unfortunately are not valuable for SEO, which is why we've augmented this with text content as you've pointed out from FourSquare. Many other sites provide aggregated content and seem to be doing fine.
Can you give any insight into the specific questions, or provide any solutions besides closing our doors?
Thanks,

Over the past few months several people with sites like this have posted here and in other forums that I watch. They all have restaurant sites or recipe sites with content that is common to many other sites on the web. Their comments are even scraped and published on many other sites throughout the web.
One of yours here if you want to see.
In my opinion, you have a business model that has been made ineffective by Panda. This applies to many different types of sites built from databases of restaurants, physicians, gift shops, etc. Actually, Google has been killing database sites for several years.
To be successful in the future, sites with a million templated pages, or even a few dozen, will need a million pages of genuine, unique, substantive and interesting content.

So until today, all those backlink count was there. And when I checked the console today, it shows only 13 new backlinks which I started building last week. what has happened to all those old 880 old backlinks?I checked from Moz, those backlinks are still there. Am i doing something wrong? Or is this another Google dance? URL https://goread.io

Forwarded vanity domains, suddenly resolving to 404 with appended URL's ending in random 5 characters
We have several vanity domains that forward to various pages on our primary domain.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | SS.Digital
e.g. www.vanity.com (301)--> www.mydomain.com/sub-page (200) These forwards have been in place for months or even years and have worked fine. As of yesterday, we have seen the following problem. We have made no changes in the forwarding settings. Now, inconsistently, they sometimes resolve and sometimes they do not. When we load the vanity URL with Chrome Dev Tools (Network Pane) open, it shows the following redirect chains, where xxxxx represents a random 5 character string of lower and upper case letters. (e.g. VGuTD) EXAMPLE:
www.vanity.com (302, Found) -->
www.vanity.com/xxxxx (302, Found) -->
www.vanity.com/xxxxx (302, Found) -->
www.vanity.com/xxxxx/xxxxx (302, Found) -->
www.mydomain.com/sub-page/xxxxx (404, Not Found) This is just one example, the amount of redirects, vary wildly. Sometimes there is only 1 redirect, sometimes there are as many as 5. Sometimes the request will ultimately resolve on the correct mydomain.com/sub-page, but usually it does not (as in the example above). We have cross-checked across every browser, device, private/non-private, cookies cleared, on and off of our network etc... This leads us to believe that it is not at the device or host level. Our Registrar is Godaddy. They have not encountered this issue before, and have no idea what this 5 character string is from. I tend to believe them because per our analytics, we have determined that this problem only started yesterday. Our primary question is, has anybody else encountered this problem either in the last couple days, or at any time in the past? We have come up with a solution that works to alleviate the problem, but to implement it across hundreds of vanity domains will take us an inordinate amount of time. Really hoping to fix the cause of the problem instead of just treating the symptom.0 -
How to avoid adult traffic to site?
A client of ours is increasingly getting a lot of adult traffic to their site, where they show up only for adult searches and not at all for relevant searches. How can we stop Google associating their site with adult content? Here's a blog example, giving advice to parents on girls and body image issues: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/girls-and-body-image keywords driving traffic to this page are all around images for 'young nude girls' etc.

Google Mobile algo traffic issue?
Hello, I have just been approach by a website owner - site isn't mobile friendly in any way - and they've seen a significant fall off in traffic since 23 Jan... backlink profile is clean (and no linkbuilding undertaken) - nothing else has changed... - more than half their traffic is via mobile devices and they've lost a good 1/3 of their traffic - and drilling deeper it's their organic traffic that's been hit. Anybody else seeing similar? edit... for reference: https://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/google-released-mobile-algorithm-think.html

Pages are being dropped from index after a few days - AngularJS site serving "_escaped_fragment_"
My URL is: https://plentific.com/ Hi guys, About us: We are running an AngularJS SPA for property search.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | emre.kazan
Being an SPA and an entirely JavaScript application has proven to be an SEO nightmare, as you can imagine.
We are currently implementing the approach and serving an "escaped_fragment" version using PhantomJS.
Unfortunately, pre-rendering of the pages takes some time and even worse, on separate occasions the pre-rendering fails and the page appears to be empty. The problem: When I manually submit pages to Google, using the Fetch as Google tool, they get indexed and actually rank quite well for a few days and after that they just get dropped from the index.
Not getting lower in the rankings but totally dropped.
Even the Google cache returns a 404. The question: 1.) Could this be because of the whole serving an "escaped_fragment" version to the bots? (have in mind it is identical to the user visible one)? or 2.) Could this be because we are using an API to get our results leads to be considered "duplicate content" and that's why? And shouldn't this just result in lowering the SERP position instead of a drop? and 3.) Could this be a technical problem with us serving the content, or just Google does not trust sites served this way? Thank you very much! Pavel Velinov

Can a home page penalty cause a drop in rankings for all pages?
All my main keywords have dropped out of the SERPS. Could it be that the home page (the strongest) page has been devalued and therefore 'link juice' that used to spread throughout the site is no longer doing so. Would this cause all other pages to drop? I just can't understand how all my pages have lost rankings. The site is still indexed so there's no problem there.

Sudden increase in number of indexed URLs. How ca I know what URLs these are?
We saw a spike in the total number of indexed URLs (17,000 to 165,000)--what would be the most efficient way to find out what the newly indexed URLs are?

I have a great idea for a contest that will generate links...but how do I promote it when I have little traffic?
I'm working on a new real estate site and I've got some great ideas to generate links. One of these ideas is a pretty neat contest. (I'd tell you what it is, but really...this is one of those ideas where people will go, 'Man! I wish I thought of that', so I want to do it first before anyone else steals my idea. 🙂 ) The contest involves readers submitting photos and other readers voting on them. I anticipate it will generate some good press both locally and internationally if I can get enough submissions. But, the question is, how do I get contest submissions when I don't have good traffic yet? Once I've got some good submissions, I'll contact some media, spread it amongst my personal fb friends, etc. Any ideas are welcomed!
